  1. I have my Khorns on a 22'wall in my 16' x 22' room and I have a similar problem with the entertainment center in the middle. I have a big screen in the center of that wall, and what I notice is an interruption of the soundstage from that. The two Khorns often don't blend together properly. I suppose I also suffer some bass loss too, but my entertainment center is built up off the floor some, so the bass goes right underneath. This may be a solution for you too, if you could somehow elevate the other equipment and leave space below. I'm surprised at how many people are trying to use subwoofers with Khorns. I finally gave up, I just couldn't get the bass to meld together. I always had the Khorns doing their thing, and then the sub was doing it's thing. I got rid of the sub. BUT! Let me tell you what else I did. I started putting more and more equipment in the living room, and when my wife complained, I talked her into letting me build another family room for all my "junk". I sold her on the idea of having "her" living room back, without all the "junk", and she jumped all over the idea. So now, I'm planning to build a room just for my Khorns and other systems, including a home theater setup on one end. Sweeeeet! Just food for thought. Greg Roberts
  2. Thanks Moon. I checke with them, and they will send them from Boston to Omaha for $130. That's a great price, I think. But I still need to figure out how to get them from Central Maine to Boston, about 2.5 hours of driving. I guess I could drive them down. We're way up here in the boonies you know! I can't believe there isn't one shipping company that can bring these from somewhere here in Maine to Nebraska. Greg
  3. Can anyone help me out there. I have a pair of La Scalas on ebay for sale right now, and someone asked me to figure shipping from me in Maine to him in Nebraska. I got a price of $1500!!!!!!!!!!!! WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I've read many accounts of shipping costs over the last 6 months from people sending Khorns, La Scalas, and even MSSM's for $150 to $300. So why am I having so much trouble even finding a shipping company to take these, and why when I did finally find one place, is the cost so damn high? I've called at least 6 different trucking companies, only a couple will even move them, and they want astronomical rates. Am I asking for the wrong thing, or what? I can't imagine. Please help. Greg Roberts
  4. Very nice looking, but I'll take my OLD body style S8 thank you.
  5. I can't wait to get a couple and try them out. Too bad they're so pricey. Too bad MFSL went out. Too bad all cd's aren't recorded the way the MFSL's are, the price would probably be only minimally higher due to mass production. Greg
  6. I'd like to know what you think about the sound quality of the Mobile Fidelity Sound Labs Cd's. Are they really that much better? Greg
  7. Mine's threatened to take my computer away from me! I got her interested in a second system for our sitting room. Then I got her interested in a new cabinet to put the system in (she likes furniture). That opened the door for my finding a "good deal" on a system! Bingo, I get to buy more stuff! Greg
  8. Frzninvt Did you see the Heresy K-55's with horns on ebay? They looked like they were going pretty cheap. I don't know if that's exactly the same driver? In fact, when I saw it, I questioned whether they got the number of the driver wrong or not. I didn't know that the heresy had the same driver on the mid horn as a khorn does. Greg
  9. I used to have a pair of single MWM's and a pair of the 10" Subsquawkers that I coupled with two pairs of industrial split LaScala's. I used this system for years with an R+B band traveling all over New England. When I set up the full system, I would have the big W's on the bottom, two LaScala bins on each side on top of those, the 10" squawker mid on the LaScala bins, and then the 2 LaScala horn sections. I had this system electonically crossed over with a 4 way crossover and I had McIntosh power on the whole thing, about 2000 watts total. I could also break down the system and set it up in various formats for accommodating different sized clubs. It was a great system that sounded much larger than it really was. I did end up blowing out the woofer drivers on the W's and replaced them with 400 watt EV's and never had any more trouble. Actually, I just remembered, when I first got the W's, I used to fit the W's, the 10" squawkers, and one set of LaScala horns, along with a McIntosh power rack, a 16 channel board, an effects rack, all my interconnects; everything I needed for a pro sound system for a band in a good sized nightclub; ALL INTO MY 1971 VOLKSWAGEN BUS!!! I remember one gig working for Bill Chinook, my bus full to the top with gear, cold as hell, and having to reach out and scrape the windshield during a freezing rain storm for a 2 hour trip, just to get to the gig on time! VW's didn't have good heat back then. I usually got to the gig long before anyone else did to set up, and I'd have to enlist someone to help get the gear inside. You should have seen the looks on the faces of the cooks, or bartenders when they saw how packed the VW was, and then had to help me bring in the huge W's! The W's actually moved fairly easily though, with the handles on the side, you'd just rest them on your shoulder and walk them in. The real surprise came from lifting the McIntosh power rack! Ah the stories . . . . Now you know where my preference for lot's of low end comes from, and why I'm asking about tinkering with my Khorn woofers. Greg
  10. I've owned Klipsch Heritage for 23 years now, and I've always thought the tweeter could sound just a little nicer. Not necessarily extend up higher, but just be a little less harsh. Get right up close to one while it's playing at low volume, it's very "sharp" sounding. I'm sure these piezzo type tweets are very durable, accurate, and efficient, but I can't help wondering what it would be like to have the tweet be just a little "sweeter" sounding, for lack of a better description. Greg
  11. Hi John, Thanks for the info. I went ahead and bought the M's on ebay on impulse, before I really had enough information. I don't regret it though, my aim is to have newer parts and an overall upgraded set of Khorns. I'll be getting my ALK's soon. I've already listed my V's on ebay at a start of $125 for the pair. Had I known, or been a little more patient before listing mine, I would have taken you up on your offer. I ended up paying $156 or so for the M's, plus shipping. I've been shunting my V's down about 3db for a while now. As my ears and personal taste have changed over the years I find that I'm always needing to adjust things. I know I don't hear the way I used to. How different, or better, do you think the X's sound as compared to the V's or M's? How much to do with the diaphram being different, vs. the age of drivers? What do you know about the newest tweeter being used in the khorn? That's an upgrade that I think I'd like to explore. I always thought the tweeter could be improved in the Heritage series. I remember thinking this way back 20 years ago. The piezzo type driver is powerful and durable, but I think there are much better sounding tweets out there. Heck, I think my 20 yr. old Advents have a nicer sounding tweet! At least at lower volumes. I'm hoping that Klipsch has made some improvements with it. JMO Greg
  12. Great post Audio Flynn! I was going to post something like this sometime. I call these my reference cd's. I like some of the suggestions listed above. I've got a dozen that I use, but I'll list just three. First is one that a lot of people use, The Eagles, Hell Freezes Over. Hotel California has an overly large kickdrum that is good for checking excursion and low-end "push". Lot's of "room", "voice pops", "stage noises" and such to hear in the background of this cd, makes it an enjoyable listen for a live cd. Another is Steely Dan, A Decade of Steely Dan. This is a collection of mostly very good recordings with a nice range. Track #1, FM, will separate the really good from the average in cd players. Just listen for the sustain on the keyboard, while at the same time listening for the separation between that and the vocals, guitar, etc... On a really good cd player, it's wide open and the sustain just lasts and lasts. Really nice. My favorite reference cd is an obscure one that I happened to run across one day and I really like the musical content as well as the sound quality. On khorns at 3/4 volume, it's just like sitting in front of the band in a nightclub, only better sounding! It's Boz Scaggs, Come On Home, 1997 Virgin Records. This cd has it all really, great vocals, a killer horn section, nice drum micing and mix, lot's of different bass guitar sounds, nice sounding guitar, Hammond B3, and classic R+B music. Track 10 is a great overall song to listen to a stereo system with. Goodnight Irene has awesome vocal soundings. I hope others keep this post going. I'd like to learn of other cd's to get. There used to be a place on line to get cd's that were recorded differently or better somehow. I can't really remember, but it seems that these cd's were special, and much higher priced than others. Anyone know what I'm talking about? I don't think I do! Greg out
  13. Al, can you tell me what the current Khorns are using for a driver and if it's different, how it compares to the K-55-VM? Thanks, Greg
  14. Try to find an old McIntosh Solid State like a 50 or 100 watt per channel stereo amp for your music listening and set up a completely different system for TV/surround etc... IMO the two don't mix well. I have been much more satisfied with my 2 channel music listening system since I ditched the surround out of it. There's a reason why the Klipsch Heritage and the McIntosh amplifiers were sold together by so many dealers 20 years ago. They work well together and Mc has a great reputation. Greg
  15. I'd like to see the pictures of what you build. Please post them on the board. Greg
  16. I have 1981 K-55-V's in my khorns and I might upgrade to a newer set. I've seen some for sale that are 1988 K-55-M's. Are the M's better? Has there been a change since then? What does the current Khorn use? Thanks for your help Greg
  17. All I know is that he is from Alabama and he and the seller are meeting in Kansas to exchange the Khorns. I'm glad I didn't get my hopes up about bidding, because that final price ended up way higher than what I would have paid. Greg
  18. John, do you know if the K-55X squawker and the K-77F tweeter are available for purchase to upgrade my khorns? Do you know of any source, klipsch or outside, that has upgrades for these components? Thanks, Greg
  19. Here's the photo of PWK's signature on the Khorn. Somebody please tell me how to get a photo on this text page instead of an attachement. I hate attachements and having to backtrack. I hope a Klipsch person gets these and gives them a good home. I wish it could be me, but they're so far away. Here's the serial numbers for anyone who's interested. 19X574,19X575 Greg
  20. I contacted the seller and got the photos. He was not able to upload them because of the size of the photos, they were huge. I resized them and sharpened them up a bit for him and sent them to him. Maybe he'll put the photos on ebay now. I've attached one here. How do you get the photos right in with this text page, instead of a separate attachment? I've seen some on this forum but I don't know how to do it. I've got three other photos, including one of the PWK signature. Boy I'm tempted to drop my re-veneering project and buy these! But I've already got the Rosewood veneer, and the Khorns for that matter! These are 3000 miles away! Someone's going to get a very special pair of Khorns. Notice in the photo that he doesn't have them in corners! Greg
  21. I just spent 7 hours on line researching and gathering information. I would be happy to share my experience and the information with you. Please email me at glroberts@prexar.com. I wanted a DTS, Dolby digital, Dolby Pro logic II, HT receiver only, not for music listening, a 5.1 system (although there were a lot of 6.1 models that I considered too), quality amplification (discreetly separate), something higher in quality than a Sony or Pioneer but a previous years model so the price would be lower, I preferred a backlit learning remote, I preferred a unit that was simple to set up and operate, quality speaker connections, and S-video inputs. I looked at Outlaw, Denon, Harmon Kardon, and Onkyo. I ended up getting an Onkyo TX-DS595, used in excellent condition for $240, but I found all kinds of good deals on new/used. I made a list of parameters that I was looking for and then a list of preferred units and the price that I was willing to spend for each used or new. I'll put the information in an email and send it back to you. Sorry, but I don't have time for email discussions back and forth, so please just send your request and I'll send the info. Greg
  22. Goosechaser, this is a good one. Here's my take on it. Our olfactory senses (smell), after prolonged exposure to a particular odor, fatigue. That is a medical term. A persons nose actually gets used to the smell and you don't recongnize it in the same way as you do when you first smell it. Now, I don't know of any scientific studies to prove or disprove this, but I think it's entirely possible for one's ears to sort of do the same thing. I've heard people talk about getting fatigued listening to a particular sound system and with others they can listen for hours. I really think that as a person listens to the sound from a particular system, that they grow accustomed to it, more comfortable with it. This can happen very quickly, say within a few minutes, or it can happen over a long period of time. I personally don't think there's much difference in sound due to a break in period, I think it's the human ear that is getting broken in. By the way, I think that the differences that many attribute to some cables are pretty much the same thing. I doubt there's a perceptable difference between a real good $100 set of cables and a real good $1000 set. Maybe an imagined difference! What do you think? IMHO Greg
  23. Thanks kjohnsonhp, that's good information. I see a lot of Dolby Prologic receivers out there for sale. I guess people are upgrading. It sounds like it would be best for me to hold out for a Dolby Digital one. I have 4 KSB 3.1's for fronts and rears, and a KV-1 for the center. All in all, I think the speakers are matched very well. I use a 15" powered sub with this system. I currently have a Dolby 5.1 preamp and separate amps, but I want a simpler system that takes up less space and requires less effort to turn on and get set up. I want a wife friendly system! What is DTS? What are the 7 channel systems I'm hearing about? I appreciate your input. Thanks, Greg
  24. I'm in the market for a relatively simple to operate, surround receiver for a small HT system. I would like to have a good remote. We will only use this system with DVD HT, that's it, nothing else. We want to be able to turn it on with one switch and go. No fooling around with controls, settings, etc... Any reccommendations? Is a DD ready machine a must? Are there any musts? I'm trying to find a used machine for $150 to $200 on Ebay. I see a lot of them, but I'm not up on the new electronics and I don't want to get one and find out that I had to have a DD ready or something else and have it not work well with my needs for DVD viewing. Thanks for any advice, Greg.
  25. I was just thinking that a folded bass horn with an 18" driver would probably extend lower and have a greater bass output than one with a 15" driver. So what if I took the Khorn plans or La Scala for that matter, and increased the volume of the box, the size of the horn, and everything else in the same proportion to match the increase in the size of the driver? Do you think that would work? I'll never quit trying. Greg
