  1. [:$] I misunderstood what your wife was saying, but I do have a one track mind and it does not always behave. Your right the louder it goes the cleaner it gets but that many watts would be amazing even outdoors, it must have shaken your windows, and he was 70 ! Brac you need to go listen, you really do !
  2. I thought that front panel was raised from the rest of the front.
  3. No way [] a program from our government that is not working and short of what was promised, I can't believe it, we must be misinterpreting the whole thing, that has to be the problem. []
  4. First, dtel, your room is beautiful and very well-put-together and I'm sure the system sounds great. My compliments to you and your helpful decorating committee. Second, it is remarkable to me to see all those lights lit on your Dx38 with the knobs turned all the way up. I've got the input knobs and the output knobs on mine all set at the 12 o'clock position (straight up) and the lights come on only at really loud levels and even then, it's only the bottom ones flicking on musical peaks. If the bottom 2 lights come on, the volume has to be at deafening levels, which is really rare and only for a few seconds, so unbelievers can see how just how much headroom the system has. Are you getting less noise and more detail with Doc Who's mod? I wonder if it would be a good idea with the high-power amps I'm using? I honestly couldn't tell you, I know there is NO noise even if you put your ear up to the 402 dead quiet. I have never had any of this set up any other way, this was the first shot ? I do have one problem a bad channel on one of the D75's, some days perfect, other days a static off and on, crackling sound which changes volume but never loud enough to hurt anything, and for no reason it stops making noise ? DrWho said it should be old tired caps, I am watching out for a replacement. The other channel and second D75 is dead quiet, with luck I can get another quiet one. DrWho could answer better about his Mod, if is Ok for higher power amps. I know one thing he told me set all knobs on the Dx wide open and he was right it works perfect always green and sounds great, I love that little box and I have not even played with any of the settings yet. I know I am not much help, it's only been hooked up for a week or two, I am still being surprised at how different everything sounds. I know it's not good quality but I was flipping thru satellite music stations this evening and tried some classical music. Normally I would not listen because that many musicans just sounds congested and small on anything I had before but it sounds great now. The music sounds huge and from the smallest tinkle to the roar of the full orchestra is much more realistic, it's believable, much more enjoyable. It's not my favorite music but I can enjoy it much more than I could before, I kept going back to that channel, it surprised me also.
  5. It's the sound of that little wheel spinning on your electric meter from that amp and ac trying to keep up. [] Or the sound of a needle grinding thru vinyl . Sorry TheEvan just kidding couldn't help it, ok that's enough of being an jack@ss for one thread []
  6. I thought that was funny also, and calls himself Jake the pimp [] stick around I think you will fit in well OR be on Amy's watch list. []
  7. That's alot of power, I think I would hurt myself ! [:S]
  8. Very funny, it's a shame no one has picked up where Mr Rodrigues he left off.
  9. Sorry to hear about your wife, doctors can be wrong, we can hope, good luck for both of you.
  10. Cat the other white meat. Calm down I have one, it's old and lazy like me.
  11. Stormin I feel like that guy in your Avatar. All I did was the speakers, the wife and daughter picked out everything else from one of them color chart things which shows which colors go together, then they went nuts and redone the whole room and connecting two rooms including floor molding, furniture and paint, everything but the ceiling.
  12. It's 4 singles, it's MUCH easier to handle that way, still about 112 pounds each without the driver. There is a big piece of that felt stuff that goes under that kind of flooring between the floor and the bass bins, they slide pretty easy. That giant TV and stand kind of helps to make them not the only large thing in there,...I guess? The 3 little speakers across the front are forte ll's, behind that beam, behind and above the sofa is 3 more forte's for the rear facing down on an angle. I don't know about the disappearing thing [] I had thought about building a frame around the 402 horn from Red Oak and on the front of the bass cabinets like a frame for grill cloth but Christy likes the way it looks especially the top horn, so until we get tired of this look they stay as they are. I may just build a Red oak frame for the 402 just to cover that flat part with the bolt holes but leave the horn open. Greg " My wife commented after seeing the picture, so what do they do, have it on half of one? " Not sure what she is talking about but if it's what I am thinking, I have to get a Cd with plenty of bass !
  13. Now that is really funny, when you say something is a particualiarly heavy number, it must be unbelievable considering this is from a serious metal head like you. [H] [] I am definitely officially old, I sound like my dad !
  14. Ok I will do that, I will try them like that, I am still using the Yamaha RX-V730 as a preamp thru the pre-outs. When I have the D75's at half volume and lets just say at 60 db, then turn it down and set the D75's to 3/4 then turn it back up to the same 60 db's it sounds better, more dynamic or something but better for sure. Did I say that correctly, at the same db's of volume it sounds better the more the D75's are turned up, it's like it's using more of the power from the amps and less of the volume from the preamp, and has a much better sound, that's why I have been running them at 3/4. Thinking like that with the D75's turned up all the way the pre amp has to put out less which is better. Makes sense ? It does sound better, I just was not comfortable with them all the way up but the more I think about it the more I want to try it.
  15. I never went past 3/4 on the D75's but if I turn the pre-amp up with the amps set at half/straight up I can get a red blink on the Dx. Once I seen a flash of red on one of the D75's when it was set at 3/4 and the sound volume was crazy loud, I will check the db's next time when no one is home. I know what 100-105 db's sound like and it sounded louder than that, and it was still perfectly clear. I listen probably around 75-85 db's on average when I have it turned up which is not that long, normally I just have where you can walk around and still talk. It's a good thing I did not have these speakers when I was young, I would be deaf now ! What's strange is after I did that I turned it down to what sounded low and walked outside, when I came back in a couple minutes later it sounded louder than when I walked out, your ears adjust quickly to volume.
  16. Thanks everybody DrWho it's just a piece of the leftover plywood with a rush job on the paint job because I couldn't wait to hear it. Just as you said I set everything where you said and it works perfect. Thank you TheEvan anytime you want to hear it let us know. I do need to make some adjustments in the Dx 38 but I have not touched any of the settings, I think it could be even better, one of the room measurement " suitcases" DrWho makes would help with that, I guess that's something I will eventually have to do. I hate to just play with the crossover settings by ear, especially my ears. Coytee I took 632597 pic's and they just don't blink in the pic's and I take the pic just as it blinks ? [:$] If you like the room you would love my dust collection on the top and back of everything electronic or the speakers, I am responsible for cleaning that part and apparently I am not that responsible !
  17. Thanks everyone Crown amps and Dx 38.
  18. You can click on these pic's to make them bigger.
  19. Nice looking dogs, but I really thought this thread was about bose salesman ?
  20. Yes it is good to get thru, well it's not the first plywood boxes in there just the biggest, the cat likes to go walk thru one side and out the other, next time she does I may have to turn it on for a second to run her out so she does not decide to claw a speaker cone.
  21. Thanks, it was a moment of insanity on my daughter and wifes part, they heard them play and said " that's what we want " [] I just went along, just to please them of course ! [:|][] Well, I keep playing around with pointing the 402 horn because I can only turn the left MWM a little because there is a door on that wall. Also you can see in the pic the horn is slid to the inside side of the MWM, I want to try and turn that left bin a little more toward the center of the room a little if I can, it would only be a few inches but it might help. The 402 really has a wide dispersion compared to the smaller horns, that what it sounds like to me at least, or it just sounds like more/bigger ? I don't quite have it figured out yet to get a perfect sweet spot that's why I keep pointing the horns at different angles. It's close but the bass bins at a slightly different angle could be affecting that a little. You asked about the width, there is 11' 6" space between the bins, where your head is when siting on the sofa is 14' from the front of the TV which is about the front of the bins. When a got my first MWM bin from Mark 1101 it never had a driver in it and I weighed it on a scale and it was 112 pounds, that was also a single bin.
  22. Almost forgot, I need to thank a few people who helped make this possible, like Roy for designing a great horn and the crossover settings to go in the Dx 38, and JWC for the K402 horn and the Dx 38, also Mark 1101 for my first MWM bins I copied and now have in the workshop and the drivers K69 for the K402 horn. The 4 bass drivers are Bob Crites cast frame and do very well. Also DrWho hot-roding the Dx38 to match better with non commercial equipment, it works great, plenty of blinkey lights like Colter says ! They sound Great, my last speakers, really ! []
  23. A while back we decided to build some speakers for 2 CH so I copied a pair I have in the workshop and made some for the house. I used Red Oak plywood and stained them to match the Red Oak entertainment center and the French doors that are in the living room already, then oiled with BLO. Let me tell you it's a workout oiling 4 MWM cabinets, that's alot of square footage ! The part I built is 4 MWM single bass bins, and the mid and high freq is covered by the K402 horn, it's run using my Yamaha HTR as a preamp (for now) and a EV Dx38 for the active crossover and is powered by 2 Crown D-75 amps at 35 WPC. It's hard to explain how it sounds without using all the [bs] over used terms which in the end does little. So I will just say they sound HUGE and very clear and if your not careful with the volume can scare you and shake the house. There is no way to tell you were listening to a horn if they were covered, the sound is not coming from a spot you could pick out, I guess because the k402 horn is so big and the bass bins are even bigger. You can walk around the room and unless your standing even with or behind the K402 you hear everything, very wide dispersion. Mark 1101 who is where I got this idea from, he told me they will rock the house, he was not joking one bit, it's not about loud any speaker can do that, it's about a huge sound and still having bass without turning it up. Ok I know you like pic's so here is a pic of how the room is set up to give you an idea, behind that pole behind the sofa is 16' more, you can't see, Kitchen/Dining room , the room with the TV and speakers is 24' wide and 18' deep to that pole behind the sofa.
  24. I think it's better to take your wife on the speakers not over !
