  1. I hadn't noticed that... I just took another look at the Surround 3 Speakers - Sound Bar Surround Sound Speakers Spec Sheet. It states: MAX ACOUSTIC OUTPUT: 94dB @1M Anechoic each / 100dB @1M Anechoic pair The BAR 48 Sound Bar + Wireless Subwoofer Spec Sheet states: MAX ACOUSTIC OUTPUT: 103 dB The 3 dB difference means the BAR 48 should sound twice as loud as the pair of the Surround 3 speakers or, to put it another way, the Surround 3 speakers should be capable of producing sound levels half as loud as the BAR 48. Be that as it may, we all know the sound we are getting from the surround speakers are nowhere near those sound levels! Those of us posting to this forum represent a small number of the BAR 48 owners experiencing issues. I encourage anyone reading these posts who is experiencing similar issues to reply to one of them even if it is only to say "me too". Tech support is provided by a third party and I am not at all convinced that they are willing or able to resolve issues related to firmware defects. I'm told that Klipsch staff sometimes looks at these posts and that this is the best way to make them aware of issues. I wish there were a better way to notify Klipsch of our dissatisfaction with this product!
  2. Hi everyone, I'm new to this community and recently found this thread on fixing the Bar 48. I'm a speaker repair hobbyist and recently a customer brought to me his Bar 48, complaining of no power. As SixerFixer has already written, the problem is related to the 5V output of the smps. Basically the smps could not sustain 5V when the sound processor chip is drawing current to power up the system, resulting in the voltage dipping to 2.7V. Thereafter the chip may sort of hangs itself and releases the drawing current, thereafter the voltage will rise back towards 5V. I've pin point the failure to be caused by C05 and C06, both being 220uF 16V electrolytic capacitors. There may not be any visible damage. For my case, 1 capacitor measured 169uF with ESR 0.4ohm, the other 30uF with ESR 4.5ohm. The latter part is closest to D02 (rectifying diode for this circuit). My initial fix was to replace the 2 capacitors with similar size and specifications type. The speaker did work properly however both capacitors were running very hot and it's only a matter of time before they will fail again. Without going much into technical discussion, basically the board requires very low ESR type capacitors to sustain a longer life span. My final fix is to replace C05 with 2x 100uF 50V (United Chemi-con KY series) capacitors soldered in parallel. This capacitor measures with ESR of about 0.17ohm. By connecting them in parallel, I effectively half the ESR but double the capacitance to 200uF (short of 20uF but still good enough). You may try purchasing a low ESR type capacitor of the same 220uF 16V, but I find it nearly impossible to have the right size that fits. I've also taken the opportunity to remove some of the silicon rubber glue surrounding D02 in order to give better cooling to that area. The extra capacitor is inserted onto C44A. The leads needed to be bent slightly to fit in the space. I've also deliberately mounted it in 'reverse polarity' with the aim of using the copper traces beneath for bridging. Below shows how the soldering was done. The yellow 'L' is kapton tape, to ensure no accidental bridging between those traces. The end result is that all the capacitors running cool to touch. I'll presume with cooler temperatures, this smps should last much longer than intended. Hope this info is useful for anyone out there. Cheers!
  3. @Bigdrago I can find no additional information on the new (revised) BAR 48 other that what was available at CES. See this Klipsch press release: KLIPSCH INTRODUCES NEW FEATURE-RICH SOUND BAR LINEUP CES 2020 Here's a clip of Michael Buratto, Sr. Product Manager - Connected Audio, at CES describing the new BAR 48. CES 2020 - Klipsch BAR 48 with Dolby Atmos @wuzzzer Were you, by chance, looking at the spec sheet for the current BAR 48? That is indeed the case for the current model.
  4. Being the OP, and having posted about my experience with my beloved Klipsch brand Nov 2019 to Jan 2020, I do not say this lightly. I fully enjoy my traditional set of 7.2 Klipsch speakers. I expected the Bar 48 with Surround 3 rear speakers to be of equal quality and enjoyment. I went through 3 Bar 48s and 3 sets of surround 3 speakers before I realized Bar 48, Surround Sound and quality do not exist in this product line despite the claims. Klipsch tech support finally admitted and confirmed this, after I told them I'd returned the product. The surround speaker volume never improved beyond a mere whisper, home theater quality of surround sound never occurred. To add insult to injury, Bluetooth failed to connect on the last 2 Bar 48s. I worked with this community. I worked with Klipsch tech support. No resolution. I returned them for a full refund and walked away. I'm now a very satisfied customer of JBL 5.1 soundbar with wireless surround speakers which I purchased from Amazon for about five hundred. If you're losing sleep over the Bar 48 product line, run, don't walk. Shop elsewhere.
  5. @Filippo I haven't used the BAR 40 soundbar but I do have a BAR 48. Do you have another device that you can connect to your TV via the optical cable? Does it also experience the same behavior observed with your BAR 40? If so, the cable or the TV itself is likely at fault. If not, it is likely the soundbar. You could try a different cable just to eliminate it as the the cause. Also, you should check to see if your BAR 40 has a firmware update available: Bar 40 Firmware Update If you still cannot resolve the issue, I would return the unit and try a different one.
  6. I have both the Cinema 600 and Bar 48 sound bars with the Surround 3 speakers pair to each. With the Bar 48 I get an awful screeching noise periodically out of the blue, exclusively out of the right side speaker. As it pertains to the Cinema 600 combo, endless static out of the right speaker. I’ve had Klipsch products for over a decade, even “upgrading” my R-10B and both R-20B’s with the new products….apparently not my best decisions. At least my ProMedia 2.1 set still works.
  7. Hi John, It seems I missed the the Klipsch community email notifying me of the update to this thread... I have not heard of anyone else using a second subwoofer with their BAR 48. As I have advised others, open a ticket with Klipsch. It may take a while before they get back to you. In the mean time, you may be able to learn something with a little troubleshooting. Do you still get the pop if the wireless subwoofer is not powered on? Do you still get the pop if all cables are disconnected from the BAR 48 other than the power cable and the subwoofer cable? Have you tried to power the subwoofer from a separate power bar or electrical outlet? Have you tried a different cable (i.e. different make, wire gauge, shielding, etc.) to connect the subwoofer to the BAR 48? The more information you can gather about what might be causing this issue the more likely you are that Klipsch tech support may find a solution. By the way, what are you using for your second subwoofer?
  8. At one point I asked Klipsch to provide some documentation but I never got a response. My BAR 48 died a couple of years ago. I've moved on. 😀
  9. Sound bar 48 5.1 just purchased; Issues with 2nd sub woofer added with a direct connection and when sound bar turns on or off - loud pop noise on the 2nd sub. The sound bar and sub woofer are plugged into the same power strip-FYI. Have adjusted the gain on the sub with no success, any input would be appreciated. Also agree on the surround sound speakers - not very loud... Also connected sound bar to LG TV via Digital optical cable, not HDMI - FYI Just updated new firmware, pop noise went down considerably, surround sound speakers are louder, and have not adjusted them yet - FYI
  10. It is unfortunate in some ways that there isn't a "Cinema soundbar thread". I certainly understand why there are separate threads for the 1200, 800, and 600, each being a different product, but when it comes to the issues we all encounter there is much more in common across the whole Cinema line. As you may appreciate, because the Cinema 800 and Cinema 600 have been available longer than the Cinema 1200 more customers have had an opportunity to identify issues with those products. You may be surprised to learn that many of the Cinema 1200 issues have plagued the other models too. Have a look at some of the other threads in this forum: Cinema 1200 Cinema 800 Cinema 600 I have responded to posts in most of the threads involving the Cinema soundbars and, while numerous issues have been identified, there are common issues impacting all models related to: Firmware updates Power (soundbar just dies!) Random noises (affecting the soundbar, or subwoofer, or surround speakers) Dialog (indistinct, difficult to understand) HDMI-ARC connectivity All sound stops (either for a couple of seconds or permanently until power is removed from the soundbar) Video and sound synchronization. ... and more. In my opinion, these are just symptoms of a few larger issues impacting not only the Cinema soundbars but the previous BAR series too. Component reliability Design defects (or oversights) Software defects impacting the firmware. While these issues can be dealt with during the product development phase, they are much more difficult to rectify once a product is in distribution. The typical resolution for a component failure is a replacement unit but if there is an issue with the general reliability of the component the replacement may encounter the same issue. Worse yet, if other components are also subject to reliability issues, the replacement can have more issues than the soundbar that was returned. This is exactly what happened to me when I received a warranty replacement for my BAR 48! It would appear that the Cinema series has not achieved a significant improvement in component reliability. Design defects can be much more difficult to deal with, for example, a soundbar with a power supply incapable of providing the needed power. These issues are usually rectified when the product design is revised which, from what I have observed, is when Klipsch announces a new line of soundbars. If we expect to see improvements in future soundbars it is important that we provide Klipsch Product Support with the appropriate feedback. Firmware issues are likely to impact all devices so, if your issue is related to a firmware defect, a warranty replacement will not help. Unfortunately, as customers, we are unable to determine what issues are specifically firmware related. The good news is that some issues may be resolved by installing a firmware update. So far, I have not been very impressed with Klipsch firmware updates! Whatever issues you may be experiencing, I encourage you to register your product and open a case with Klipsch Product Support. Whether or not they are able to resolve your particular issue, this is the only way to reduce the likelihood that new products will encounter the same issues found in current models. I hope this overview will help you decide how to best deal with your current issues.
  11. Well if it is not the fuse, see what Klipsch says troubleshooting through their motions. Plenty here just do a search here and and on google on the bar 48... @KevinB
  12. FWIW, I have the BAR 48. This is what I went through to get TV sound to work. I connected to my LG TV using the optical cable. At first I didn't get sound, but then I made sure to push the optical connector into the port of the TV very firmly - and I confirmed it is connected by seeing the other end of the optical cable is a bright red light. I then connected the optical cable to the BAR 48. Later, when I was adjusting the sound settings on the LG TV, I found that I *must* set it to "internal speakers plus optical output" to get sound (setting the LG TV sound to "Optical output" did not work, for whatever stupid reason, so I switched it back to "internal speakers plus optical output" and simply turn the TV sound down to zero, then adjust the sound volume on the BAR 48). As for firmware, my BAR 48 out-of-box had the most current firmware already. Finally, rather than using optical cable, I happily switched to using an HDMI cable from the LG TV to the BAR 48, which is quite easy to setup and use.
  13. @shric Klipsch Customer service is slow in responding to new service requests. Register your product online. Open a service request online. Once you do so you will have the service request number, you can then phone in and talk to someone about it. You really need to update your firmware. Pay attention to the USB thumb drive size and how it is formatted. This video may help. The BAR 48 requires an HDMI ARC (Audio Return Channel) An HDMI connection that doesn't provide an ARC won't work. For your digital connection: Connect the cable to the TV first. Make sure you see a light at the other end of the cable. Ensure the optical cable is firmly seated in the BAR 48. Ensure you have selected the digital source on the BAR 48. When I first got my BAR 48 I connected it to my Panasonic TH-50PZ800 TV via HDMI and got no sound at all and never did get it working. I didn't try a digital connection. I had been using a cheap Sony surround sound system for ten years without any issues (other than the sound quality).
  14. Hi I am a newbie and setting up my 1st ever Home Theater and Surround System. I am looking for some advice on what receiver / floor standing speakers / In ceiling /Center and Sub woofer to pick ? I have short listed these: 1. Center Channel and SW - BAR 48 SOUND BAR AND WIRELESS SUBWOOFER 2. R820F Floor Standing Speakers. 3. Klipsch CDT-5800-C II In-Ceiling Speaker - White 4. Denon AVR-X2600H 7.2 Channel 4K UHD AV Receiver, Supports Dolby Atmos, DTS:X & DTS Virtual:X, Amazon Alexa Compatible - Black or Denon AVR-X2700H 7.2-Channel 8K Ultra HD AV Receiver with 3D Audio and HEOS Built-In - Model: AVRX2700H
  15. My setup is similar to yours. Samsung Q70R 4K TV Apple TV 4K Klipsch Cinema 600 (with Surround 3 speakers) connected to my Samsung TV via HDMI-ARC. With all the devices you have it is important to know how they are all connected as each one has the potential to alter the audio format. Lets start with what the Cinema 600 supports. Even this is not clear to me. The Cinema 600 spec sheet states: Dolby Audio is pretty general and there are several Dolby Audio formats. Prior to getting the Cinema 600 I had (still do) a BAR 48. The BAR 48 spec sheet states: Here the specs are pretty specific about what formats are supported although I never could get any sound using Dolby Digital Plus. My TV supports these output formats and will allow me to choose them if the connected device supports them. PCM - Stereo or Mono. [HDMI-ARC or Digital] Dolby Digital - maximum of 6 channels (5.1) but also Mono, Stereo, 3.1. [HDMI-ARC or Digital] Dolby Digital Plus - Supports #2 at a higher bit rate plus 7.1. [HDMI-ARC only] Dolby Atmos With my BAR 48 I could select #1, #2, or #3, even though #3 wouldn't work. With my Cinema 600, I am no longer offered #3 as an option so I must assume the Cinema 600 does not support Dolby Digital Plus and therefore does not support 7.1 inputs. Based on the above, the best one can expect from the Cinema 600 is Dolby Digital 5.1 via HDMI-ARC or Digital inputs if the TV supports those connections. If the source content is not Dolby Digital encoded some TVs may continue to provide a Dolby Digital encoded output with only one or two channel content. My TV will automatically switch to PCM. This will affect how sound is processed by the Cinema 600. You should verify how your TV behaves. According to the documentation the Cinema 600 should Downmix 5.1 to 3.1 if the Surround 3 speakers are not connected. Provide virtual surround. Unfortunately, the manual does not explain exactly how virtual surround is supposed to work. The diagrams in the user manual do not include the subwoofer and, of course, there is no description provided so one can only speculate. Once we factor in other devices and apps, things begin to get complicated. Apps may run on your smart TV, Apple TV, Plex, or other devices. Some apps, like YouTube, only provide stereo output regardless what a particular video purports to offer. On the other hand, with the appropriate subscription, the Netflix app is capable of passing through a Dolby Digital encoded output stream if one is provided in the video but that still doesn't guarantee the Dolby Digital encoded stream will reach your soundbar if the platform on which the app is running is unable to capture and process (or pass through) the Dolby Digital encoded stream from the app. Klipsch has to provide better documentation and explain how these features are supposed to work. Only then can we know if the device is working as designed or if a specific behavior is the result of a defect. If we suspect a possible defect, as I would if the documentation is not specific, we need to open a case with Klipsch tech support to get the issue resolved. You can find additional information about some of the Cinema 600 features here.
  16. @MikeF I'm a customer like you. When we encounter issues we can't get resolved we turn to public forums for answers when we probably should have checked the forums before making our purchase. 😉 My personal recommendation is to return your soundbar for a refund or for different brand, if your retailer will do that for you. It's really up to the retailer. I have not done this because I purchased my BAR 48 last November and my retailer is under no obligation to accept the return. In my opinion, Klipsch should not be suggesting we do this as it's not the retailer's responsibility to resolve issues with Klipsch products. Have a look at this thread for other reasons why I suggest looking at a different brand. Audio is coming but voice is not coming with new soundbar You might be surprised at the number of BAR 48 issues that customers have encountered as is evident from these forum posts. If you are unable to return your BAR 48, I have some additional recommendations in this thread: BAR 48 Surround volume at max but can barely hear them Please update this thread and let everyone know how you plan to proceed.
  17. I was given a Cinema 600 to replace a Bar 48 that I had nothing but problems with. Set up the 600 and I'm having exactly the same problem you're having . One Surround 3 speaker or no speaker would pair. They alternate which side too. LOL. Tried upgrading soundbar firmware, it locked up and now neither the bar or the subwoofer will turn on. Between the 48 and this one I've been at it a couple months. I have a set of corner horns that are over 30 years old. I have their 7.1 entertainment center system. All great, worth every penny. I'm so frustrated with this wireless stuff. It's good thing there's no phone support on Saturdays.
  18. @btlancaster24 The Cinema 600 is the newer soundbar. Both soundbars have essentially the same features including a "Night" feature to disable the subwooder. The Cinema 600 has a larger subwoofer, higher power, and slightly better frequency response according to the specs. The BAR 48 has a number of issues, some of which may have been corrected. To learn more, search the community for "BAR 48". I have no hands on experience with the Cinema 600 but know the BAR 48 all too well. I would probably go with the Cinema 600.

    BAR 48

@KingJames I just came across this thread now. While this issue affects your subwoofer, most of the other BAR 48 posts are in the Home Theater forum which states: "Talk about Klipsch Home Theater products and setups including Floorstanders, Bookshelf Speakers, Soundbars and more here!". Initially there was quite a bit of activity as there was no information at all provided by Klipsch about BAR 48 issues and the forums were the only place available to seek help. This thread in particular has had more than 43,000 views. BAR 48 Surround volume at max but can barely hear them Since most of the BAR 48 issues have been raised in various threads already. and there is still no additional information from Klipsch about efforts to resolve them, I suspect most customers are getting all available information from existing posts.
  20. @Olivier Michaud I see that no one has responded to your post. I'm sorry I haven't checked for recent posts in several weeks. I have a BAR 48 that came with the original firmware. I updated to v83 then to v30 and noticed no difference in the sound levels. My source is my Samsung TV using an HDMI ARC connection. I don't often use a Bluetooth connection so I don't know if that has been impacted but the sound level with Bluetooth is dependent on the sound level from the source. From the reports customers have posted in these forums, the BAR 48 appears to suffer from a variety of manufacturing defects, aside from various firmware issues. I would suggest you try to obtain another replacement. By the way, I purchased my BAR 48 on Black Friday 2019 and have encountered most of the issues reported in these forums. Many of the issues still remain after installing the v30 firmware. In August Klipsch Customer Support agreed to provide a warranty replacement. I'm still waiting for it to arrive: the Surround 3 speakers have been out of stock for months. 😞
  21. @Kulanan I don't know why this is happening. Perhaps some additional information will help... Firmware: What version did you install? Did it fix any other problems? This would confirm it installed successfully. You say your notebooks "cannot connect bluetooth to my Bar-48". What do you mean? They cannot see the BAR 48? They can see the BAR 48 but cannot pair with it? Have you installed the latest firmware and drivers on your notebooks? What is the distance between the notebook(s) and the BAR 48? Have you tried moving the two devices closer together?
  22. Hi DaleG, the past few days my Bar 48's subwoofer was dis-connecting from the bar and the Bluetooth was crackly and not playing properly. After returning the Surround 3 speakers for a refund....I decided to box up the Bar 48 and take it back. I got an LG SL6Y soundbar instead of getting a Klipsch replacement. So far so good! I'd say the LG soundbar has better sound compared to the Klipsch but the subwoofer that comes with it, is a bit weenie....It's a 6" sub but much smaller enclosure compared to the Klipsch. I can still control the volume for the sub, and the LG bar seems to have more audio settings, and even an equalizer to fine tune the highs and lows. Also LG has surround speakers available similar to the Klipsch ones however I can't seem to find them anywhere just yet....everyone is sold out! I was really hoping the Klipsch would work out but seems you and lots of other Klipsch owners are having the same issues.
  23. @DaleG For the time being I will withhold that information for a number of reasons: I have provided Klipsch details similar to what you have but I have not yet heard back so I can't say whether or not I will have any more success than you have had. Many support organizations have a process for assigning cases so knowing the names of other support staff does not mean we will have access to them. Klipsch does a very good job of restricting public access to internal staff. One example is that we have only been given first names. If we are relying on them to resolve our issues there is no point in possibly antagonizing them by making that information public. According to the specs, the Surround 3 speakers should be capable of producing more than sufficient sound levels but those sound levels are determined by the BAR 48. If there are issues affecting the sound levels or sound quality the source of those issues could be: The Surround 3 speakers themselves. The wireless dongle. The BAR 48 itself. When troubleshooting, a best practice is to make one change at a time and assess the results. I realize this is difficult for those of us experiencing these issues if one product must be returned before receiving a replacement and especially when the replacement experiences more issues than the product that was returned. 😩 There are additional issues when dealing with a large online retailer: They may have a large quantity of old stock, all of which may experience the same issues. There is no way to check out a replacement before accepting it. In your case, you may be better off trying to get a warranty replacement directly from Klipsch. I have some comments about the issues you reported to Zach: I agree. I don't have this issue. Since it affects both speakers I suspect the issue lies with a component common to both: Perhaps the wireless dongle or the BAR 48 itself. I agree. Where does it state the volume adjustment is only +/- 9dB? I know there are 8 volume level adjustments up and down from neutral but I don't remember seeing anything stating what they are or should be. If your previous BAR 48 didn't have this issue then it is quite possible that this replacement has other issues, perhaps even contributing to #2. I too see the same behavior with my unit but with only one TV and one soundbar I had no way to determine whether the issue lay with the TV or the soundbar. I will reach out to Klipsch once again to see if they have made any progress.
  24. @DaleG Yes I do have the Surround 3 speakers connected to my BAR 48. My BAR 48 is connected to my TV via HDMI (ARC). I do not have a DVD/Blu-ray player. The sound level from the Surround 3 speakers is adequate when: I'm watching a movie with DD sound and the DD light on my soundbar is illuminated. and... the ((SUR)) indicator on the BAR 48 is illuminated, and... The surround volume is at maximum The sound from the Surround 3 speakers is barely audible when the ((SUR)) indicator on the BAR 48 is illuminated while: listening to a non DD audio source, or using the Bluetooth connection, or using the analog connection. I would like the sound level from my Surround 3 speakers to be at the current level with the Surround volume set to a neutral level.
  25. Update Mon Dec 30, 2019, 1200PM PST. In short, I received the replacement BAR 48 (from Amazon), updated the firmware (to v23 of 12/13/2019) and was disappointed (again) the Surround 3 (2nd set) speakers remain whisper quiet even with Dolby Digital and Surround lights on. To add insult to injury, Bluetooth does not connect (Bluetooth on the 1st BAR 48 worked fine to connect to both my Windows 10 computer and Android smartphone). Bottom line, if this were any other brand and I absolutely had to have 5.1 rather than 3.1, I'd shytecan it and never look back, but I'm a long-time fanatic for the Klipsch sound and Klipsch delivers for me again in amazing 3.1 sound from the affordable BAR 48. Having 5.1 with the Surround 3 speakers is an option that doesn't work for me and I'll simply return them for a refund. I can easily exchange the BAR 48 on Amazon again to get Bluetooth back online (Kudos to Amazon. Each year, from Thanksgiving onward, Amazon offers deep discounts and allows returns/exchanges through Jan 31 for almost everything).
