pjpmd
Hi, I just bought a pair of 1983 Belles in Walnut in mint condition off ebay. (see link). What is typically done for the care of the wood? Am I to oil it, or just keep it clean? Thank you, Pete http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=280293347395
Jeff Matthews
Very nice! For years, I used lemon oil furniture polish.
Hifi jim
Beautiful Belle's Pete! Congrats and I'm sure you are going to love them. I don't have much experience here other than to say that I put lemon oil on my walnut kg4's once a year or so and they look as good as the day I unwrapped them 20 years ago. There are many experienced wood workers here that may be able to offer better advice. I stay away from Pledge or any product that sprays from a can. I use Old English Lemon Oil. Enjoy your new speakers.
Budman
Pete, first thing to do is to get glass tops cut for them at your local auto glass shop and put some 1/4" felt pads on the glass as not to have the glass sit directly on the veneer look for some products from formbys
LarryC
Yep, the veneer looks pretty dry. They're WO (walnut oil), not lacquer, so oil away. I have lacquer, so I don't know much about oiling Klipsch speakers. I do use Formby's lemon oil and like what it does to lacquer. BLO is supposed to be just the ticket too. An expert furniture restorer said to stay away from silicon oil, and I think wax is a no-no as well. VERY nice!
sunburnwilly
The guy I bought my first pair of Belles from used Formby's lemon oil on them so that's what I use . I hear BLO is better but it is combustable and I don't want to deal with that . Lemon oil also smells very nice , kinda like lemons [:^)] . Groomlakearea51
On all of the Heresy's I've redone for folks, I've always used Old English Lemon or Almond Oil (dependent on the veneer species) as the final coating. Every once in a while I'll use 1 part BLO + 3 parts mineral spirits, or Watco Danish, but only if the woner wants the BLO for more of a "sheen". BLO fills the pores, but is a "gummy" substance. Some folks like tung oil, but it's very labor intensive to do it right.
tuned4life
Can't speak to what is the best oil. I use watco. Those are the nicest Belles I have seen. If it wasn't the dead of winter I would have bid to win and made the 1600 mile road trip.
colterphoto1
Watco Rejuvenating Oil is the modern fix for those beauties. Apply thin coats and rub rub rub.
