wuzzzer
Last week I delivered a pair of speakers I sold and as a thank you was given a Dyna tube powered FM tuner. Its stamped "Dynatuner - Model FM-1" I thought it was a super nice gesture on his part. I'm going to hook it up tonight and see how it sounds. Who knows, this just might be the start of a long adventure down tube lane...
wuzzzer
I hooked it up to my wife's boombox that has an AUX input to test it out just to be on the safe side. The stereo indicator on the front is really cool. I had an old FM antenna that I hooked up to it and it pulls in stations really well. The volume switch is super quiet, no static at all. Currently listening to "Shooting Star" by Bad Company on our local classic rock station. I can't really appreciate how it sounds on my wife's boombox so I'm going to go switch it over to my Marantz. It is really cool to see the tubes with their soft glow.

wuzzzer
Ah, sorry. I don't know Steely Dan very well. A co-worker is a huge fan of theirs, he would have got it. I have it hooked up to my main stereo now and it really sounds great. Older gear really is fun.

wuzzzer
So last night at work I asked my co-worker who is a big Steely Dan fan "So, if I were to say to you 'No static at all' what would you say" and he replied "FM?" I just laughed. He said its one of their more popular songs and that I'd probably know it if I heard it. I listened to a clip on iTunes and recognized the song right away. SWL
When I had tubes.....in my bedroom system......I listened to Steely Dan more than anything else. I can't remember which song it was but the illusion of hearing a doorbell about four feet above my head slightly to one side used to always freak me out. My solid state gear in the same room would never duplicate that effect. The first couple times it happened I went downstairs to see if someone was at the door......although, the doorbell hadn't worked for more than two years prior to that. Just_Strummin
Once you go tubes, you'll never go back. To expedite your journey, buy a 45 valve based amp. You'll wind up there anyway. Flea powered at 2 watts, but nothing is sweeter. Enjoy!
