Cut-Throat
When I opened up my Khorn Bass Bin and Replaced the Drivers with a new Pair from Bob Crites, I noticed that there was no damping material inside at all. has anyone experimented with Damping or have opinions pro or Con on whether damping the Bass Bin is an improvement or detriment? bluesboy
From what I've read damping material inside the bass bin is a no no.
sootshe
For what it's worth I tried different types of material inside my LS bass bin with negative results. You will lose the timbre & texture of the bass, it just dampens everything out & makes it sound like a one note bass effect. Hey, I can get that sound listening to a ghetto blaster!! Dylanl
I asked this question a while back and the overall response was NO GO. It would seem to make sense ( standing waves ) but I don't think anyone ever has taken readings. If they are open try it in just one and then A/B it. I am very interested. PrestonTom
The material is not for absorbing standing waves. Such material would be too small to absorb wavelengths that are 2 ft and longer (500Hz). Material inside the back volume, as I understand things, is to make the back volume "larger". It is this volume that leads to what PWK called "reactance annulling". This effectively boosts some the low frequency output (within reason). You can see the possible effect by running an impedance measure of the cabinet with and without the polyester or fiberglass in place. Before folks run out and do this (and I do not think the material is necessary - they would have put it in if it was ...) remember that the back volume must be relatively airtight. So make sure that the seal is intact etc. -Tom
