homemadeheresy
Just won a new amp on ebay and am thinking of trying a tube pre-amp, was curious if anyone had any experience with one of these? http://cgi.ebay.com/MA-Ref-Marantz-7-Modified-Class-A-Valve-Tube-Pre-Amp_W0QQitemZ270543304648QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item3efda337c8 Please wait Image not available
seti
For the price I've always wanted to try one. Then have someone check out the parts and how it is made.
fini
How do they get away with calling that a Marantz 7?
LarryC
I sure wouldn't touch a totally phony "Marantz 7"! If you don't need a phono input, how about this one: http://www.audiogon.com/cgi-bin/cls.pl?preatube&1272127182 I'm not familiar with most preamps, but Mark's Juicy Music units get nothing but praise around here. seti
How do they get away with calling that a Marantz 7? In theory they copied the topology. Then they used the inexpensive parts available to them in China.

russ69
I'm not sure what you paid but it looks like they did a half decent job of putting it together. I have bought a few low cost components from China. None have been bad designs and some were of very high quality. You wont know how it sounds until you plug it in and try it. Keep us posted as you test it out. Thanx, Russ
Don Richard
Class A? Aren't all single ended tube preamps Class A? And all single ended solid state preamps?
seti
How do they get away with calling that a Marantz 7? Good question. Aside from not looking anything like a 7 - which is fine - this is NOT a Marantz 7 circuit either. A Marantz 7 has (6) 12AX7 tubes. This puppy has 12AX7/ 6N4x2, 12AU7x1. Lost in translation? garymd
I'm more curious about the Manley "Jumbo Shrimp" preamp. I thought Mark took somewhat of a risk using fruit.........but Jumbo Shrimp? Seems kind of fishy to me.[]
thebes
I think you'll find that this is a line-stage only preamp with no passing resemblance to the real deal. It will not have a phono section, nor will it have bass and treble controls like the original. Now if you don't need phono then some possibility for cheap Chinese and others open up.
