Is it possible to get big sound out of a bookshelf speaker?

I am looking at putting together a purely music system. I want high quality, large sound. Will I be satisfied with a bookshelf like the RB-5 or RB-3? Or will I need a full tower to get the kind of full range music I want? I don't want to use a subwoofer. Also would the SF-1 or SF-2 sound better than the reference bookshelves? I just don't have the money for RF-7's. Any other suggestions are appeciated.

You can get a lot of sound from a bookshelf speaker system but if you want full sized floorstanding tower sound you are going to need......You guessed it.

Take a look for some of the discontinued Klipsch full size speakers. You could likely find a pair of KLF20's or 30's fairly reasonably. You might also consider something along the lines of the Heresy,Chorus or Forte - any of which would cost less than or no more than current Klipsch bookshelf models.

The Reference Line is above the Synergy Line (SB or SF)

The RB5 sounds bigger than most people realize until they get it in a room, get it on some decent stands (about $100), and back them in a little - close to the walls, to bring up the bass.

One of the best values in Audio.

Seriously - If you truly are looking for a listening system, look at the Heritage line. If size and price are important, get a Heresy or Heresy 2.

They regulary sell on Ebay $400-$550 sometimes cheaper.

Since I discovered Heritage in the 70's - Nothing else compares or satisfies me musically.

What do you have against subwoofers? It is the only way to get a bookshelf system to sound big. I bi-amped a pair of Kg2 with a Sumo 250W amp, a Sumo electronic crossover, a Sumo subwoofer (JBL 2235 driver), and an 800W Crest power amp. Plays Klipschorn loud, goes deeper in the bass, higher in the highs, and is smoother in the midrange. I've also bi-amped a pair of Heresy with four JBL 2235, makes the Klipschorn sound kind of small.

I have synergy.. There no refrence but they are nice

for the money .. I think of it this way compare Klipsch

to mercedes ( the car co ) synergy beeing the lower model's

but there still a benz u know.. SO even though its a lower

model its still a high quality brand.. I would look into

used KLF's maybe or either synergy's or reference

bookshelves I wouldnt be suprised if the SB3 bookshelves

( synergy's with an 8 inch woofer ) were louder than the

SF2 ( dual 6.5 tower synergy ) If setup with a nice stand.

But if you could afford

it i would def go with the RB3 or RB5 bookshelves and

a nice sub.. My KSW does fine for a budget setup w/ the

sb-3's

Hope this helps.

trvale,

Additional point:

Klipsch makes a few subs. The RSW10 looks good. If you could roll it off (I think the low pass freq. is adjustable) at 40Hz to 50Hz and drive the RB-5s independently with a low power/low distortion amp, (tubes, ss class A) you'd have a good combination. A preamp or seperate volume control would be required to control volume to the sub and main amp so that both track volume setting.
