Mike Simone
Hello I just acquired a pair of 1984 Klipschorns. They are in mint cond. I'll be using a 300b 9watt tubed amp. My question is should I modify them in anyway. Thank you Mike
DizRotus
Welcome to the forum. My recommendation is to enjoy them as they are for a minimum of 6 months before even considering modifications. While you're listening to them, use the search function of this forum to expose yourself to what others consider to be "upgrades" to Klipschorns. IMHO, the first "modifications" to consider might be to the room, rather than the speakers. Make certain the Khorns fit tightly in good corners. Try them along the longer wall. Experiment with seating position. After you have them sounding as good as they can in your space, then you might consider replacing the capacitors in the balancing networks. If you do, you'll be starting down a slippery slope. How fast and how far you go down that slope is up to you. Use the search function to find more threads with more suggestions than you'll ever have time or money to implement. Good luck.

Don Richard
Getting them tightly sealed into the corners is critically important. A good method to get a tight seal is to use split foam pipe insulation. Using the forum search for foam pipe insulation will bring up pages of info on the subject. After they are installed listen to them for a while before deciding whether any other "improvements" are necessary.

garyrc
Work on the room first. Read through "Corner Horn Imaging" by Cask on this forum. Not to imply that imaging is the most important thing ... but the advice in Cask's thread (above) improves horns in a room generally. Also get a cup of coffee and read through "Artto's Klipschorn Room." Start with the antedeluvian and move forward in this fantastic thread. Some of the mod people improve their product from time to time, as does Klipsch for stock components, more reasons for working on the room first. I agree that you should listen for a few months before changing anything, then take a month or so between any later changes.
