sub for home theater use question

Recommended Posts

I have the opportunity to pick up a rsw 12 for around the $500 range or rsw 10 around the $3 to 4 hundred range. Is there a truly noticeable difference? Are either suitable for home theater use or are there better options in that price range? I'm afraid the 10 will be lost in my current setup, which is a 83/64. I have a fairly large room that open to my kitchen, but will only be in this house a few more months, then will more and don't know where yet. Please give me your opinions. I'm also looking for a reasonably small footprint. Would something in the newer line be better, such as sw311, or a totally different band. I'll most likely be buying used. Thanks for your help.

Chad.

Either sub would be fantastic for music but if possible do a little negotiating to get the RSW12 for less.

Is there a truly noticeable difference?

For HT yes, for music not as much.

The RSW12 will be fine for HT up to a medium sized room(<3000 ft3), the RSW10 not so great for HT. The RSW10 has adequate midbass punch but nothing really below 30Hz. There are better subs for HT in your price range.

Please give me your opinions. I'm also looking for a reasonably small footprint.

What is the max size dimensions you want to go?

Bill

I don't know if I have a max, just don't want one as large as an end table. And really want one in cherry, but haven't been able to find it.

You can have 2 out of these 3 qualities in a sub, but not all 3. Small, efficient or good extension. Pick the 2 that are the most important to you and start your search there.

Good point CECAA850. If you want it to sound big and bold for HT, it will likely be quite large. My vote is for an RSW-12 or an RSW-15 if you can find one. The 10" just won't move enough air for that really powerful movie shaking experience. The RSW-15 has NO problem digging down deep and clean.
