My La Scala problems.

So, as many of yall know I am trying to build a theater with a la scala trio up front. I got a pair of 1992, and a single industrial which I am unsure of the year, but I would say 2000 present. I was unhappy with the sound of the 1992 because of crap sound in my opinion. Granted I did not hear them with lossless or what not. Now that they are in my livingroom I have listened to them and started looking at each individual speaker. the 3 la scalas will be called light, dark, and black.

light tweeter is unreadable resistance

light squaker is at 10.1 ohms

light sub is at 3.9 ohms

dark tweeter is unreadable

dark squaker is at 10.3 ohms

dark sub is at 3.9 ohms

black tweeter is at 6.3 ohms

black squaker is at 10.2 ohms

black sub is at 3.9 ohms.

the unreadable tweets have very very low sound output. the light sub has a huge crack going through the sub, the voicecoil also rubs on the magnet. the black squaker is very very quiet. once I unscrewed it, I saw some liquid on the outside of the diaphragm. it has been drained and is drying. I believe that it will function normally once this is corrected.

who in the heck made this speaker?! this does not look like klipsch at all!

here is the view after I tore into it! I already ordered some k-77s to replace this junk!

both of the wood finish la scalas have al-3 crossovers. they look like crap! I mean they function, but it is clear they have not been treated as well as I would have treated them over the years.

crossover al-3

as far as the sub, do yall recommend replacing it, or reconing it?

this one is rubbing and cracked!

I will try and get some picture later of the industrial la scalas crossover. it has a k77 tweeter instead of whatever junk is in the 1992s.

thanks for reading this, and giving whatever advice you have!

Piezo tweeter. 1016 variant by the looks of it. Certainly doesn't belong there, as part of the La Scala design.

Definitely seen some mileage exterior-wise. On a redeeming note, you've got the big Aerovox in the mids and polyswitch tweeter protection there. Good stuff, for factory trim of that vintage.  :emotion-21:

Is that picture from the one that made the road trip?   Re-cone would be a good idea. Could DIY or send it out, either way.

Good to see you're thoroughly inspecting your gear.  :emotion-21:  You find all kinds of interesting things.

Got pictures? Wouldn't happen to look like this one, eh? https://community.klipsch.com/index.php?/topic/152054-anyone-know-whats-going-on-with-this-k55m/

it actually is not. the black one made the road trip.

no its nothing like that. on sunday night of my party, there were some kids running around. i suspect they squirted some water in them? i set it in the sun, went out for lunch, and when i reinstalled the black la scala sounds amazing! i will post a picture of its crossover in a bit.

my thoughts on la scala vs rf7ii, rf7ii beats the la scala with music, or really most anywhere when a lot of different frequencies are playing at the same time. it just seems to handle busy sounds much better than the la scala. the bass output by far exceeds the scalas too. but with dialog, and movie playback the scalas really shine! that single scala really out did both the rf7s during the short bit of a movie i watched.

sadly the other ones will need quite a bit of work before they sound as good as the black one.

Let me summarize, to see if I understand correctly:

Light and Dark, matched L/R, and both have the crap piezo drivers, replacements ordered.

Light sub has a crack in it.

Black:  All drivers work good, XO is within specs.  The squawker had some liquid on it, but once it dried, it was fine.  This LS sounds great.

+++

I'm also curious what you are going to do about the 3 XO's.  They all look as if they are very similar in spec, and as soon as you get the new Light/Dark tweeters, they will all 3 spec out about the same.

I would think if you had to upgrade all 3 networks that would be very expensive.

Piezo drivers aren't necessarily crap. Aside from wide variances in manufacturing quality over the last couple of decades, they've got to be implemented correctly (ie. in a system designed for them).

So long as conditions are met upstream in the signal chain, they can positively sing.

That Piezo tweeter array on the MCM 1900 system sucked! The Piezo tweeters go weak after a while, and that is why Klipsch came up with the 4 K-77 driver into 2 x horn tweeter for the MCM 1900.

yeah, these crossovers are expensive once you start multiplying everything by 3! i think i will just rock them as is, after putting new k77 tweeters in them. ill gauge how they sound off of the black one, i know they have whole different crossovers, but i will see if they sound about the same. if they do, ill freshen up the caps a little later, if there is obvious differences then i will have to find new crossovers, or rebuild the ones i have.

well, those piezo tweeters that were in there sucked! i dont think i will ever try them again. they felt the same weight as a quarter! :(

Sorry to hear of your LaScala Trio troubles.  I'm grateful all three of mine are in perfect working order and have identical crossovers.  Sure hope you get them working as they should be.  Once you get them, I believe you are truly in for a treat.
