TV or AVR to Switch inputs?

If the video input signal is not HD, then it would be better to run it through the AVR first.

Assuming your tv has a 1080p native screen then 1080p video signals would look best connected directly to the TV. If your video signal is 720p or lower, then most AVRs should do a better job at scaling it up to 1080p than the TV itself.

Remember, your tv can ONLY display its native resolution, otherwise it has to be upscaled and that's a job best left to external hardware.

Very few tvs have nice scalers built-in. Pioneer, Hitachi, and Sony are/were known for these.
