Skillz4lif
As I continue to upgrade my setup, I'm planning on placing bookshelf speakers in the rear. My front end consists of RF-7s and a RC-7. Amazon is selling the RB-51 ii for 199 while I can get a used RB-3 for around 80. Should I just go for the bigger driver speaker? Is the RB-3 actually timbre matched to my current setup. Moderators Youthman Posted January 10, 2017 Moderators Share Posted January 10, 2017 These RB-5's would have been perfect! They sold within a few hours of listing.
Skillz4lif
Yeah, I tried to get them but my PM didn't go through so I missed out.
Skillz4lif
The 3s seem to have better specs than the 51s.
Moderators Youthman Posted January 10, 2017 Moderators Share Posted January 10, 2017 There is a difference between RB-5 and RB-51. RB-51 is a lower end speaker.

Yeah, I think I'm going to just roll with the 3s. More than half the price and better specs.
Moderators Youthman Posted January 10, 2017 Moderators Share Posted January 10, 2017 I think the RF-3 will do a good job as surrounds. You can always upgrade down the road to the RB-5, RS-7 or RB-75 if you feel they are lacking.
Skillz4lif
I've been eyeing some RS-7s for surrounds so if I get those will the 3s be able to keep up on the back end?

If you can get the RS-7's for a good deal you should jump on them, they are excellent surrounds. The RB-3's will be fine for rear surround content. The History Kid
The RB-3's can hold their own. Make no mistake.

Skillz4lif
Thanks. I think that will be the route I'll take.
RoboKlipsch
I have the RB-51s, honestly as rear surrounds they'll keep up as long as they aren't WAY back. But the RB-61s are on sale now everywhere too, that would be a really nice pair for the back and they are front ported

So I'm keeping my eyes open in case something happens before I negotiate a deal for the RB-3s.

You can get what you want if you have a bit of patience, I wouldn't be surprised if Fry's doesn't offer it again, they seem to have gone through most of the last lines and offered up a bit of everything....mains, centers, bookshelves and subs. For rear surrounds, of course you want something nice especially with RF7s, but realize that the RB51s would be sufficient, assuming they are within 10 feet or so of the listening position. Only if they were very far away could you have a problem where the high sensitivity of the RF7s would simply outmatch the RBs. I think it's as much as 6db difference in sensitivity. Skillz4lif
I agree that they will end up being resold sooner or later. This would be similar to all of these R-28Fs that are popping up. There's aboutt 4 posts on the Richmond, Va CL for R-28Fs unopened in their boxes.
Skillz4lif
I picked up the pair of RB-3s yesterday for $80 and they will be added to the setup. Although, I need to buy new stands since my old ones are built for satellites. These things are bigger than I had expected.
