Would these be overkill for Klipschorns?

Overkill? Say again?

Well, anyway, are you talking about the price, power, or quality?

With Klipschorns, (statement from what I have gathered on this forum) I feel they are probably the best speakers, literally, and they need very tube amps to show them off. I think spending $5,000 a pair for amps is NOT unreasionable for the Khorns.

Anyone else?

Overkill? That word is never uttered here Smile.gif

(it is written occasionally hehe)

20 watts would not be an overkill for your ears maybe, not the speakers Smile.gif. and from how I understand it, it requires some (the klipshchorns) good clean power from high end stuff to really enjoy them.

Not many people have experience with Apollos, but I would venture that since they are (were) Welborne Labs ultimate amplifier, then, yes, they should be pretty darn good.

I wouldn't worry about the too much power part, just think of it as insurance against needing to knock your hanging pictures off the wall, if the need arises, that is.

k-horns perform wonderfully on good tube amps from one to 105 watts RMS rating. The k-horn's max input rating is 105 watts RMS. As many have said..."It is just the first clean watt that really counts on k-horns, anyway"!

"I have gone to high efficiency horns and no longer need the power. These things drive anything that is 85db efficient or more with ease ..."

I think he's on to something. I'm not questioning your choices but -- personally -- I think the Moondogs or Laurels would be a better choice sonically and financially Smile.gif Horns don't need much power ... Rarely more than a watt in bursts ...

And the 'dogs look GORGEOUS as well.

My very humble 2 cents.

But, if you scopped them up (and god forbid) you replaced your Khorns, you would have a great amp.

If you crank the begebbers out of your music, I would want a lot of power.

Radiohead,

These amps will not be overkill for your K-horns. They will sound robust, with clean, authorative bass. They will not have the same sweet midrange finesse (others may describe differently - check with Mobile H.) of a lower powered triode (say a 2A3 or 45 tube).

I have tried numerous amps with my K-horns; (Solid State - various McIntosh, Yamaha, etc.), push-pull tetrode (Fisher 500C), push-pull Class A 2A3, SET 2A3, SET 45, SET 50, SET 300B (with KR 300BXLS & Cetron),& SET 10.

My favorite is the 2A3 SET amps - overall the sweetest to my ears. The KR 300BXLS is a high powered 300B with a robust sound. (I still have my SET 300BXLS amps - hooked up to Heresy's).

Too bad you can't audition those Welbourne Labs on your system. Why don't you call Ron Welbourne (go to his website for his phone number or e-mail) & ask his opinion? I'm sure he's familiar with K-horns & his amps.

Have fun & enjoy,

Pete
