Adding separate amp to AVR

When adding a separate amp to an AVR does the AVR become the pre-amp/processor with the amp just being the amp? Also when doing this does the watts per channel of the AVR get added to the watts per channel of the amp? If running a 5.2 system how many channels do I need in a amp? one more thing.....will the separate amp know when I am in stereo mode and apply the power total power to just two channels.

thank you in advance!!!!

LOL!!! Great answer! Thank you Schu….very helpful, I am learning everyday here

For the amps, any permutation of... basically some folks only replace the front amps because they want the higher quality for the main channels and for stereo listening.  Then you can drop the amp channel requirement down and many times use the amplifier channels in AVR for the rest.  This comes with typically more inexpensive price or allows for higher quality 2/3 channel amp vs many times a more compromised 5 channel.
