khorndog
Just pulled a Stephens Tru-Sonic out of a 1954 K-horn.. anyone ever see this before??? Still sounds great! Cone and surround in seemingly great shape as well.
hanksjim1
no, maybe the salt ocean air at some point? This is also from a '54 I'll let others chime in... Edited July 27, 2019 by hanksjim1 edit
khorndog
I brushed off the loose stuff and it looks a lot better...
JRH
Worst corrosion I've seen. We just emptied our truck trailer of artifacts for a long-overdue inventory. This stuff has been in there 20+ years in the Arkansas heat (and a little cold). Definitely high humidity! Bottom center in the first pic is the worst. The second pic shows the zinc & yellow chromate plating on the front plate going south. It is actually turning to powder. But yours takes the cake. It's likely due to poor surface prep prior to painting. Your pic of the non-corroded driver looks like a back plate/magnet shift (no longer concentric). Amazing that it has not locked the voice coil!
hanksjim1
You're right JRH...just a pic from an Ad for a '54 to show corrosion extent for a similar vintage driver...I decided not to buy that one...LOL I did end up with this one, also from a '54 Edited July 30, 2019 by hanksjim1 added pic
johknow4@gmail.com
I'm certainly no expert but looks like salt air to me. As if it lived on the coast at some point.

Thanks for the feedback and pics.. When you say "Your pic of the non-corroded driver looks like a back plate/magnet shift (no longer concentric)." Which are you referring to? And if you mean my driver when brushed... what are the indicators?
hanksjim1
You can see the where the magnet is not sitting flush with the lower housing...
Bill W.
I think it is an optical illusion from the reflection of the flash. Properly aligned with no overhang.
