ShapeShifter
Ah! Mobile you are correct as always. I did forget Sonny Rollins' Night At The Village Vanguard, Blue Note (1957). I've been around, just not as active as before. Actually have four of the LP's you listed. I see you are as busy as ever, and still providing a wealth of great knowledge and insight. Waiting to find out who that fair maiden is. Wes
mobile homeless
Surprised no one rose to the challenge with this last LP. The girl's nickname is "Pumpkin" which is another hint and one someone could solve if they were crafty on the net. That $100 would be a tough offer at this stage but with the most shots in one place of this band located above...well....someone.... kh
Allan Songer
Alice tells me the band is "Guv'ner" and will lend me a CD. She likes something called "Earl Grey Tea" don't know if it's a song title or album name. Do I win anything?
Allan Songer
Oh, another thing. Is this band any good?
mobile homeless
Good lord! Alice has me impressed! Allan, you should definitely win something....$25! Heh.... Indeed. The "Earl Grey Tea" reference is their first 7" and about as obscure as you can get with that band. I dont have a copy of that release. Click below if interested. I felt so moved by you figuring it out, I found a damn webpage I had made last night and posted it after uploading some mp3 I burned(accessed below). Be warned, it's no West Coast sound! While you might find their stuff unlistenable, Charles Gansa is a great quitarist with amazing riffs, just about the antithesis of FM rock. They are an acquired taste to be sure but a great little short lived three piece. Who is this Alice? kh
NOSValves
good lord !!!!! how the hell can you listen to music like that !!! They actually sound ILL and possibly on way to much smack or H !!
mike stehr
Hey Man! It's pop music for the millennium for those who "know". Punkin don't look too strung out.
mobile homeless
See you didn't quite like the Guv'ner. I can understand that as it almost like listening to something alien sounding when you hear music like this. I liken it to when you were a kid and you played rock and roll for your parents and they hated it (although I was lucky here in that my jazz based Dad did appreciate groups like The Beatles etc and my Mom actually loved Led Zeppelin/The Who/early Yes etc). The following is surely not going to be too popular on this board but.... To me, listening to Don Henley, Eagles, post drugs Clapton, etc is the same as listening to muzak or music by the numbers. It has no edge or real inspiration to me. Then again, bands like "Godsmack" etc that people think are heavy etc sound the same but in the prefab metal version of no inspiration. It's like 98% of the Blues bands you hear now as well; they don't have anything approaching soul nor anything approaching honesty; it sounds like "music by numbers." I don't include people like Hendrix, Jimmy Page, old Clapton, old Pete Townshend, early John Lennon, .... pretty much early anything. The 70s and middle America FM was the decline of popular music, hence the explosion of the underground scene. And then the mainstream/commercialism got a hold of that and produced "MTV Alternative" with "grunge" bands which brought about another string of imitators that packaged the sound. To my ears, it takes a few seconds to hear someone playing by the numbers vs someone doing something from their own skull.... and it has nothing to do with musical talent per say. Sadly, in a strange twist of irony, musical talent in rock has lead to a host of more mediocre(as in insepid) recordings than ever before. i.e. look at Carlos Santana, a great guitarist who suddenly went totally mainstream and caught the media's eye. His stuff is void to me now, and not just because it's popular per say; it just has that de facto rote sound that sounds CANNED to me. Ditto with post-drug "cured" Eric Clapton, who has managed to make some of the most vapid music in the last 25 years... I use the same comparison with a lot of modern jazz compared to the jazz from the 50s and 60s. Even some of the talented musicians are putting out some pretty prefab material that sounds for all the world like MUZAK Jazz with nothing behind it but easy listening sheen. kh
JCturboT
Kelly, I know exactly what your talking about-just too many sound alike bands. As a matter of fact lots of my friends dislike bands like Creed and Godsmack as they say they're a rip off of Stone Temple Pilots, which I really don't get as I dislike STP but like the other two mentioned groups. The only problem is that if you are labeled "different" you will find it impossible to get any airplay. and if you stick to your roots your labeled "unoriginal" (AC/CD & early Metalicca come to mind) But I rather listen to either of the last three mentioned bands then to be stuck listening to Guv'ner Jeff
NOSValves
Kelly, I will give your Guv'ner one thing. They are Original !!!!! Craig
Dale W
CRAIG: well today is the 18th hope you've got mail !!! and there in one piece. lol Checked out the web page at C.A.E . Lots of goodies there for mods, i'm betting these amps have never been touched. I'm very intrested in hearing what they sound like.
NOSValves
Dale, I spent hours last night researching I'm thinking that Triode's replacement board will do fine. If you indeed want to mod them. I would most likely recommend buying them bare and then I will spec some better parts to fill the boards with. Also the Bias mod will be a upgrade I would highly recommend but to do it you have to do the other so... I'm sure that they won't show up here till late today its only 9.40 AM here UPS doesn't show up till late afternoon here. I will also have to give a close look to the PS cap situation these are trouble some parts in the mark III's from what I gather. I'm giddy as heck waiting for them to arrive also. I sure hope the tube compliment is in good shape. I don;t have spare of what this amp takes. Craig
Dale W
CRAIG: nice part of C.A.E page is the download option for the manual and assembly instructions.I printed it off this morning, 15 pages. Has the printed cuircuit and all factory specs. You just have to love this internet stuff today, you can find almost anything if you look hard enough. Thanx for the time spent last night. I started pulling out old boxes of lp's last night and i'll be sure to ship them out to you.
NOSValves
Dale, I downloaded it too. I'm pretty sure the boards accomplish the same thing between Triode and CDA so its just a matter of who is cheaper. Triodes boards come with a nice manual also from what I understand. Neds a wealth of information too !! But its all the same to me either way. Craig
Radiohead
Mobile, I really liked some of those tracks. "Clear the Room" had some interesting bass notes. To me it sounds almost like Beck and the girl from "I am the World Trade Center" together performing duets. Who knows? I was going to suggest for you, if you haven't already heard of them, to check out "Built to Spill" and the "Halo Benders." Listening to some of these tracks reminds me a bit of these two bands. They are somewhat like "Modest Mouse" as well. Ryan
mobile homeless
I was going to suggest for you, if you haven't already heard of them, to check out "Built to Spill" and the "Halo Benders." Listening to some of these tracks reminds me a bit of these two bands. They are somewhat like "Modest Mouse" as well. You named three great bands here, all which do AMAZING live shows as well. I have seen Built to Spill on several occasions and when Doug Martsch is on, it is a GREAT show. He is an extremely gifted guitarist and some of his stuff is GREAT. I havent seen them since the mid-90s but the last time was in Boston at the Middle-East and he brought the place down, something hard to do in that jaded town (so many great bands pass through). Doug Martsch is also in the Halo Benders with ole Calvin, a deeper voice I dont know! Heh...they are great as well...their first album a definite keeper. Do you have "Dont Touch my Bikini?" This is an ALL TIME classic! Their first LP is definitely worth getting. IF you like the Halo Benders, make sure you get the early BEAT HAPPENING stuff. Go grab "Jamboree" Modest Mouse has gotten really big lately (in the indie sense). I saw them at the Cats Cradle in Chapel Hill, NC last year... I actually like them better live. Be sure to play all the songs on the Guv'ner page I made. The more listens the better with them and on first take, all does not sink in (as in most good stuff). kh ps- The only problem I have with Modest Mouse is that a lot of their stuff sounds too close to Built to Spill... TOO CLOSE for comfort...
NOSValves
Dale, Well they made in fine shape. They are now playing on my Lascalas. They sound okay but I believe could have some major improvement. I haven't tested the tubes yet. But one thing I can tell you is I'm sure you'll want a new quad of output tubes one amp has USA 6550's and the other has Chinese this can't be good for balance from amp to amp. The other problem I see is the can cap on one amp has been changed to one of a lower incorrect value not suprising replacements are readily available these day's. Also 2 coupling caps have been changes on one amp and not the other. But I'm sure we will be dumping those driver boards anyway there anceint. Cosmetically there a great platform to start on. They need a good polishing but there in nice shape no major rust or tarnish. Well I haven;t went under the chassis yet so I'm off to play !!
