SenorPwnador
Just got a pair of 85(?) La Scala Pros that have been sitting in a shed forever. Woofer works fine on one, but no sound from mid or tweeter. Woofer and mid fine on the other but no tweeter. The backs are sealed on these so I removed the screws and opened them up to take a peek at the crossovers - everything is amazingly clean, although the capacitors seem rusty. What’s the best process for me to follow to identify what’s wrong with these. Not afraid to learn new tools and such, but am a novice to these things. One photo of crossover attached here. babadono
Got a meter? If so disconnect the wires at the crossover that go to the speakers..woofer, squawker and tweeter. The tweeters should read close to 8 ohms. The squawkers 16 ohms and the woofers 4 ohms. Although it sounds like you say the woofers are good. Pretty normal for the capacitor cans to get rusty as well as the outer frames of the inductors. Does not necessarily mean they are bad.
wuzzzer
First thing I've always done with older Klipsch with networks like that is loosen then tighten every screw on the network board. This will remove years of oxidation and give a much better signal path to all the components. Try that first and see if anything changes.
babadono
Yes of course...very good idea to loosen and re tighten the screws at terminal board to remove (or break through) any oxidation. I always assume people automatically do that. But I'm an electronic tech.
SenorPwnador
Is it worth cleaning those connections while I'm in there? Deoxit or something similar?

JMeader
Also tight all the screws on all the drivers they can get loose
SenorPwnador
Quick question, does this include the screws that mount the network to the body of the speaker? Those Philips head screws in the photos? those seem to be the only ones that have corrosion. all the screws holding the wires down (flat head screws) are super clean, like they just came out of the factory - I unscrewed and tightened all of those, but no change. Next up, multi-meter testing.

SenorPwnador
Ok, swapped non working squawker to the working squawker side and it isn’t firing. Tested with a multimeter and the numbers are all over the chart, nothing steady. So I’m guessing this K-55-M is shot? Anything else I can do with it with little technical knowledge? Or should this go off to repair or should I just buy a replacement? tweeters are next.
SenorPwnador
Ok, tweeters are all over the map too. So all told I guess one bad k-55 and two bad k-77. Reputable place to buy replacements? It seems like k-77m is the way to go for the tweeters?

Post a wanted add in the garage sale section. I would recommend buying from a Klipsch member first.
billybob
Guess they told you about replacing diaphragms in those drivers? @Fotog by

Ordering replacement kits from Crites. Not positive if these fit the square back tweeters though (https://critesspeakers.com/products/k77-diaphragm-kit) I think so? We’ll see, I emailed them to find out.
SenorPwnador
Does anyone have a recommendation for paint for the squawker horns on these? Gotta replace the squawkers so I may as well remove the horns and paint them (they are peeling and need it pretty badly).

I found the satin "canyon black" colour to be just right.
SenorPwnador
Ok tweeter diaphragms replaced with a Crites kit! Sounding good! Now I need to replace one K-55m, the question is do I get a pair of Crites kits, or do I hunt down a single working K-55m? Is it bad practice to get them individually like that? Like a chance of some imbalance?
nickyboy6100
As long as it’s a good working K-55m you wouldn’t tell a difference.
SenorPwnador
Final update for a while. Found a k-55m on eBay for $165 and the guy took my offer of $125. Installed it today (although I need to solder some new contacts in it at some point), and both speakers are sounding amazing. Cosmetic updates are next, but I’m traveling for a bit so it’ll have to wait. Thanks for all the help getting these beasts up and running!
babadono
Excellent job, you are really going at it full speed. @SenorPwnador Almost 40 year old speakers and you're up and running in less than a month. Cannot get over how clean those crossovers look. Are you going to post more pics of how the cabinets look? We love pictures.
