Frzninvt
The weather was horrible, snow, freezing rain, slick roads, dork drivers but I perservered and made it to Maine and back in 12 hours and brought a beautiful pair of Oak Oil Khorns home! They are in stunning shape, applied a coat of boiled linseed oil and put them in place of the Belle's tonight. I love them! I immediately noticed the increase in the bottom end. I am going back for the La Scala's later this month they are older ones in Birch Lacquer, anyone need some Walnut Oil Heresy II's I will let them go for $425 and I have the original boxes for them. Khorns, La Scala center and soon to be La Scala rears - yeah baby! He has two Velodyne 15" subs as well I may look into those as well. The other pair of Khorns he has are Birch Lacquer with cane grills he only had one of them there at the time, he said the other had a scratch on the front and some rubber residue on the top from the feet of a component that sat on top of it for a time. The one that was there looked nice, I debated as to which pair I wanted. I took the Oak Oil ones though. I will most likely have the Belle's on eBay this weekend since I had no takers. I'll get some photos of my new babies up tomorrow. I thought the Belle's were big - Ha! Tough getting them things in my minivan. Bye for now. j-malotky
Congrats on your Khorns. Sounds like an first class Heritage HT you are building. Moon the bass is more solid on Khorns, but they need a corner with a good 4 feet of un obstructed room on each side to produce the bass. If I remember your rooms are pretty narrow. You may have placement problems. Khorns really shine in large rooms. If you consider an upgrade to Khorns, you may need to look into building false corners for your place. That will give you more placement options. JM
Frzninvt
Here is a photo of one of my new beauties! Would tail seals make much improvement in them? I was thinking of using 1/2" or 3/4" pipe insulation and slip it over the edges on them instead of purchasing the tail seal kit from Klipsch. Does anyone know how much it is? I am getting very good bass response but I am wondering if the tail seals would improve it further. Thoughts? They have the AK-2 crossovers, with K-55M mids and sound quite good I do not notice any drastic difference from the Belle's AA's and K-55V's with soldered on terminals. Chris Robinson
Frozen in VT, Very nice pair! That was a good score. I was thinking about them myself here in the Boston area, but one pair is good enough. I put too much sweat into mine to just sell them. Beside, the "C" sytle is different but nice in its own right. Two quick comments regarding corners and seals. Your RH speaker in the corner looks good, and it appears that space is a premium in the room. It looks like you have a Belle and a sideways Cornwall in front of the Khorn, and that will definitely reduce the bass from the RH unit. If you can move those out into another room, the sound will open up considerably. On the LH unit butting up against the fridge, you're losing bass response to the gap between the fridge and the wall. I would definitely put some 2-3" stripping on each side of the tail board to make sure all the bass waves move out to the sides. These two improvements will really open up the sound. Good luck! Frzninvt
The Belle's are going (currently on eBay) they are just there temporarily, the speakers on top of the Belle's are the Acoustron LWE-IA's which are extremely similar to the Cornwalls with the exception they use a 6" CTS midrange instead of a mid horn, the woofer is a 15" CTS and the tweeter is a vertically mounted EV T-35. They are extremely rare and feature the motion feedback circuit that utilizes a power amps negative feedback loop to reinforce the bass of the 15" driver down to a solid 20Hz. Their are controls on the back for room gain, tweeter and midrange levels. I am thinking about selling these as well as I have no room for them. I have the matching stands that go with them. They utilize Cinch-Jones connectors to send signals to and from the power amp. I was not using the circuit however. Their efficiency is about 96-98db or so and the sonic signature is very similar to the Klipsch speakers I had them connected as additional mains. I live in an apartment right now so the one butted up the the fridge is the best I can do for the time being. I think I will try added the tail seals and see what happens. Thanks for the advice. I have attached a photo of the LWE-I.
Chris Robinson
Very interesting speaker there! Common vertical tweeter to Klipsch Cornwall II's (very early). Nice small package as well. How much would you sell them for? Just curious since I'm browsing for some smaller speakers for my office Eico-based system.
Frzninvt
They are extremely heavy, much heavier than a Heresy and somewhat taller but not as deep. Bass response is even better than a Cornwall, they are a sealed enclosure and not ported so the bass is tight and controlled. I have the original matching stands for them, I also have a 1970 Stereo Review article that reviewed and tested them. They were virtually perfectly flat 20Hz-20Khz according to the review, I can email it to you in the form of JPEG's that you can enlarge them and read it. I believe they were hand built in the late 60's in Louis Erath's facility in Houston, TX. Placing a value on them would be tough since they are so rare, I have never seen a pair of them for sale anywhere even on eBay. They would make quite the conversation piece for sure. They are in excellent condition with only minimal wear. Email me an offer and we can go from there. Frzninvt@yahoo.com
AndyKubicki
Guys, that's not a Fridge, it's the new look in false corners! Those sure look nice in the walnut finish! I have the unfinished birch and wish I had the walnut. I have never put the tail seals on mine (call it lazy!) but I need to do that myself.
