BackBurner
Besides Klipsch there are lots of goodies to be had in the horn world. What would your " next " choice in horns be if klipsch were not an option ? This ultra would likly be a little to much $$$ for most but " hey " what a conversation starter this beast would make . TBrennan
BB---I've owned lots of horns, including several "real" Klipsches but this Altec-JBL Pro-Edgar rig I used until I sold my house and went to high-rise living beat any Klipsch I heard. The 825 bassbins are A5 with 515B drivers, above are JBL 2420 drivers on Edgar saladbowls. Later I went with Altec 288 drivers on tar-filled 1005 multicells, that was even better. The pair of JBL 4648 bassbins augmented the 825s below 100hz. Now I use Heresys. :-)
BackBurner
TBrennan - Now were talking my kind of game ( air movement ). PS : I love the " salad bowl "
TBrennan
BB---Your picture showed up when I went to the attachment. Here's a closeup of one of the Edgars. They were very nice sounding horns but I used to go back and forth between the Edgars with the JBLs and Altec 511s with 902s. Then when I got the 288-1005s, whoa! Piranha
Tom, Impressive looking speakers you had there. Did you have anything to prevent the salad bowls from bouncing off the top of the cabinets at high volume levels? Or did you just rely on the paperbacks? Is this the way all of Edgars horns are? Thanks!
JohnA
I'd probably pick an Altec Model 19.

BackBurner
TBrennan , what did you do with all that gear when you moved ? Still have any of it stashed away for a crazy day . lol
TBrennan
BB---The paperbacks held the horns in place OK. :-) I sold lots of the gear, gave lots away to good homes, to guys in our Chicago Horn Club. Here's the rigs us Chicago guys brought to the first Midwest Audio Fest. The inside speakers are Bean Counters JBLs: LE 15s in AcoustaCraft cabinets and JBL 2420s on Edgar saladbowls augmented with a Fostex tweeter. The outside pair are my Altec 605A Duplexes in Barzilay cabinets. I kept those in my storage locker and then loaned them to a kid in our club a couple of weeks ago. TBrennan
Here's a JBL meant for small theatres that's similar to the Communitys. JBL was practically giving these things away a few years ago when they had a big online tent sale, lots of fellas picked these up (this one is Chang's), they're great hifi speakers. The vocals and midrange are on a par with the best I've heard.

garymd
I do like my altecs (811 series horn). I'd still take the cornwalls if I had to choose but it's closer than you'd think.
Guy Landau
I like the JBL C50 with S8R components http://www.lansingheritage.org/html/jbl/specs/home-speakers/1973-c50-c60.htm, the L300 Summit http://www.lansingheritage.org/html/jbl/specs/home-speakers/1975-l300.htm and my Altec "Big Red" monitors. TBrennan
Guy---One of my pals just picked up some really nice L-300s in Madison for $600. Such a deal.
Guy Landau
That's a great deal and a lot of speaker for the $$$. Actually they are worth between $1.5-2.5K if they're in good condition. BTW, If you ever decide to sell your 605's drop me a mail. I heared that they will match well with my Mastering Lab crossovers.
KeesGuy
Just curious - Has anyone heard the megabuck AvantGarde horns I've been seeing ads for? I think I remember Stereophile doing a review of one of the smaller ones a while back. Here's a link: http://www.avantgarde-usa.com/basshorns.html -Jim
Guy Landau
I've heared them and to my ears, the Khorns sound better.
