Rob_S
Fellow Klipsch owners, I seek your advice... I own a pair of Quartets from circa 1994± which I enjoy very much. However, I would very much like to replace my Polk surrounds. My predicament, I'm not sure what route to take. I'm in the unfortunate situation of not being able to audition the new speakers (I know, I know) so hopefully some experienced ears can make my decision easier. I've been considering the new RB-3s at around $600/pair and can also get a pair of KLF20s for not much more than that. I realize neither of those, particularly the latter, are true 'surrounds,' but I have plenty of space so size isn't too much of a consideration. The KLF20s are appealing because I can get a fairly good deal on them. The RB-3s are appealing because they're smaller and do provide some positioning advantages, and they're a bit less expensive. So, what to do, what to do. My Quartets and sub provide plenty of bass so I don't think that's too much of a consideration. Maybe there's another Klipsch that would be more suited to the Quartets? Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.
Mikekid
Rob, If you could locate another GOOD used pair of Quartets you would have the PERFECT match. NO NEED to audition. I have seen some very clean Quartets go on ebay for reasonable $$. They are not on there very often though. Just a thought........................................ Take care Mike
Rob_S
Thanks Mike. Do you (or anyone else) have any suggestions in the event I can't get a hold of another pair of Quartets? TIA.
myram
Go to yahoo classifieds and do a search for Klipsch. There is a pair of Oak Quartets for sale in Virginia for $375. Other then those, I haven't seen any others for sale. A pair just sold on eBay over the weekend for $350, and a pair sold a couple of weeks ago for $550. So if you keep your eyes open and search around you'll find them. ------------------ Home Theater System: Klipsch Quartets - mains for both systems Klipsch Academy - center Klipsch KG.5's - rear surrounds Klipsch KSW12 subwoofer Denon AVR-1601 JVC 36D201 36" TV JVC HR-S3600 SVHS Player JVC XV-M565BK DVD Player Scientific Atlanta Explorer 2100 Digital Cable box Music System: Adcom GFA-555 Musical Concepts Modified NAD 1600 Pre/Tuner Sony C-67ES CD Player Playstation 2 Monster Power HTS-2000 MIT Speaker Cable RS HT Gold Interconnects Monster S-Video and Component Cables
Rob_S
Thanks myram. I checked out that classified ad and had the owners send me some additional pics. They look to be in good shape. Does anyone have an idea of how much it'll cost to ship from VA to IN, or how I would go about figuring the shipping cost? TIA (again). myram
I would say it would cost you around $30 each speaker for UPS ground service with insurance. Make sure he packages them very very well....lots of bubble wrap and foam peanuts...and thick boxes. I'm glad I could point you to a pair of speakers that you were looking for....it makes all my internet browsing worth it when I can help people. Good Luck. Rob_S
Thanks Steve. So with shipping I'm looking in the $450 range for a pair of used speakers which could round out my system nicely or, on the other hand, could turn out to be less than my expectations due to misuse, etc. $450 would go a long way towards a new set with a warranty. Do I want to risk it or not? What to do, what to do.
myram
It is a big risk buying from someone you don't know, but thru communication with the seller you should be able to tell whether or not it is worth it or not. Try to ask the right questions a few times in a phone conversation to see if the answers are the same, try to find out why he is getting rid of them, what he powered them with, what kind of music he listens to, how old he is......you know the usual background info. Since you aren't "that" far from him, shipping might be less. Just go to www.ups.com and enter in his zip code, and your zip code and the weight of each speaker plus 5 lbs for packing and that will give you a price. ------------------ Home Theater System: Klipsch Quartets - mains for both systems Klipsch Academy - center Klipsch KG.5's - rear surrounds Klipsch KSW12 subwoofer Denon AVR-1601 JVC 36D201 36" TV JVC HR-S3600 SVHS Player JVC XV-M565BK DVD Player Scientific Atlanta Explorer 2100 Digital Cable box Music System: Adcom GFA-555 Musical Concepts Modified NAD 1600 Pre/Tuner Sony C-67ES CD Player Playstation 2 Monster Power HTS-2000 MIT Speaker Cable RS HT Gold Interconnects Monster S-Video and Component Cables
Rob_S
Hmmm...UPS is telling me $15.60 Ea. ($31.20 total) for two packages each at (Weight: 60 lbs., Dimensions: 34x20x17 in., Insured Value: USD 250) using "Daily Pickup Service." Can that possibly be right? myram
It could be right, your in Indiana, and he's in Virginia....that's really not too far apart. I just paid $35 shipping for my Academy (40lbs) and that was from California to Maine. I'd say go for it, after some good communication with the seller. Keep us updated on how you make out. Mighty Favog
Rob, Audible Elegance in Cincinnati has (last time I was there about two weeks ago) had a pair of Quartets in great condition for $400. I'm not sure if that's for the pair or not. I'm pretty sure they were in Walnut finish. Rob_S
Thanks for all the help and suggestions gents. I have a tendency to hem and haw these things to death, but I'll let you know what I end up doing. Cheers. Edit: looking at this picture they sent again, it looks like the center of the woofer is caved in. Anyone else see that or is it just my imagination? myram
Yeah it is caved in, but that is only the Passive Radiator. The dust cap is just for looks really, but if it bothers you, you can take a needle and pull it back out again. Offer the guy like $300 + shipping......see what he says. List all the things that you see wrong with them..... and lowball him on the price. ------------------ Home Theater System: Klipsch Quartets - mains for both systems Klipsch Academy - center Klipsch KG.5's - rear surrounds Klipsch KSW12 subwoofer Denon AVR-1601 JVC 36D201 36" TV JVC HR-S3600 SVHS Player JVC XV-M565BK DVD Player Scientific Atlanta Explorer 2100 Digital Cable box Music System: Adcom GFA-555 Musical Concepts Modified NAD 1600 Pre/Tuner Sony C-67ES CD Player Playstation 2 Monster Power HTS-2000 MIT Speaker Cable RS HT Gold Interconnects Monster S-Video and Component Cables
decibel man
It definitely looks caved in, in the uper right-hand side of the center portion. I am not sure if that will make any sonic change, but it doesn't look pretty. You may be able to pull it out by using some adhesive, tape or something else. Good luck! Rob_S
"Passive Radiator." I think I just showed my ignorance there. I requested some additional pics from the owners (who have been very responsive so far) so I'll keep you posted. Btw, if I needed to replace some drivers, how much difficulty would I have getting replacements? Thanks again guys.
ShapeShifter
Hi Guys, I'm looking for Quartets as well, in Black or Walnut. Rob_S...If you're not interested in the Walnut pair in Cincinnati, I'd like to get the phone number or web info for Audible Elegance from tblasing and communicate with them. Their $400.00 price is a bit more than I hoped to pay, but if they're in geat condition I would consider them. Good Luck on your search! Rob_S
Wes - Have at it. If I end up getting a pair I'm going to try and get the oak to match my existing pair. Good hunting!
Mighty Favog
Wes, I don't have the phone number at hand but here is their web site.
