Dove-tailing still exists! My God! I thought it a skill long since dead. A long passed relative was a cabinet maker for about 50 years - he was the last person I ever saw making dovetailed joints as a matter of course.

In fact when my father once questioned him on this he replied: "Another way of joining wood together? There is another way?"

One of his conversation pieces was a little cube of wood what was dovetailed on all sides. This is, of course impossible as there is no way to get the last side in with the shape of dovetails he used. No-one ever figured out how he did it (he swore blind he didnt cheat) and he took the secret to his grave.

One day when I re-build the boxes for my speakers I plan to have a go at dovetailing. The work involved is a bit scarey - and the margin for error is effectively zero - but I really fancy the challenge.

Dove tails are alive and well max. Though certainly not the norm (cost more), there are still quite a few cabinet makers and wood workers that use it. Just ask Fini, I think he's still in a jig making mood. That is of course, unless he's found the jug 9.gif .
