What, no room in there for the gals of Country? And where is Johnny Cash?

Mary Chapin-Carpenter's "Between Here and Gone" album was the most overlooked release of 2004; it was not a commercial home-run, but it had the most listenable songs of any release from last year, in any genre.

And my Fortes love to bring Johnny Cash into my home frequently, from his classics to "Hurt", nobody had, or has, the broad appeal and sheer presence of the Man in Black...

Where's Johnny Cash? Heck where are any of the classic artists in the no-mans land of radio's country formatted hat acts featuring retread 70's pop tunes passed off as new! Where else can you hear Brooks & Dunn do remakes of BW Stevenson's My Maria and Shambhala (flip sides of the same song with only different words!), initially covered by 3 Dog Night to the tune of several million copies!, and have people all rush out thinking its a new song!?

And have country radio explain why they won't play Lyle Lovett, or why Pure Prarie League is formatted rock, but take the exact SAME release, stick a Vince Gill label on it and it is suddenly country? (a true story!) Or why Amazing Rhythm Aces and Russell Smith can't get played? And ask the country folks what happened to Emmylou, the queen of country, I mean the hippie after inheriting Gram Parson's 'hot band' on his death who then went from being a 'hippie' to the queen of country to a pariah when she released the Daniel Lanois produced (incredible!) Wrecking Ball!

Nashville has an internal phrase begun by Hayes Carlock of Music City Record Distributors that caught on called "ROPS" for the formula hat acts and female model studio creations. And its not a compliment! There are too many genuinely talented artists. But unfortunately most are #6-7 in the labels' rosters. I fear, unfortunately, that the closest you to finding good country talent is in the alt-country/Americana format. And no, you won't hear that on the 'country' formatted stations either!

And where else could a band like Desert Rose with personalities like Chris Hillman, Herb Pederson, and John Jorgenson be nominated for the best newcomers in country a few years ago with only almost 100 years of experience between them!? And if you don't know who they are, google them!2.gif

Don't get me going with Nashville music industry stories! We'll all end up in jail! 2.gif9.gif3.gif
