farmer24
Is anyone running a 9.1 system? I am thinking of up grading from 7.1 to 9.1. My local audio guy said that he doesn't think that it would be worth the expense. I am under the thinking the more the marrier. Thanks for the imput. colterphoto1
next we'll be hanging speakers on the ceiling and under trap doors in the floor. Where will it stop? 11.3, 17.5, ???? I'm holding out for the day that we have electrodes implanted just behind the ears. Michael

Guest BobG
Latest professional digital cinema format is 16.2 ch.
DrWho
Are all 18 of those channels discrete? I just thought the side surrounds were derived and on fancy time delays to get them to lineup through the crowd...
Guest BobG
All discrete in this case. Not to say it's being rolled out but it's in the spec.
Griffinator
Couple years back at AES they rolled out a 26.3 system demo in one of the booths. It was pretty ridiculous - speakers literally everywhere... I can't imagine how phase cancellation doesn't become an issue once you break the 10-channel barrier... damonrpayne
I imagine at some point there will be a membrane of some kind that completely encircles you. For the home, I think the formats will move from 7.1 to having a second discrete bass channel and 2 speakers in the ceiling. (THat is a wild guess but makes sense to me)
Audible Nectar
9.1?!?!?!? Where would I put NINE Cornwalls? I wouldn't worry about anything over 7.1, as there isn't much available even in 7.1. Most are 6.1 or 5.1......if a 9.1 format really takes hold, worry about it then......but doubtful you will need to address that - at least anytime soon. I think 9.1 would be a novelty....doubt it will stick for home use.

As for the lack of 7.1 content, I'm hoping the up and coming HDDVD and BluRay will address that, as from what I read it is primarily a storage issue at this point. oldtimer
16.2? Clearly the way to go is to buy up your favorite speakers until you have enough to add each time the format expands..... If I moved into a movie theater where would the furniture go?
kenratboy
Three front One 'side' pair inFRONT on the listening area One 'side' pair firing into listing area One 'back' pair firing foward Seems like a good compromise to get a 'movie theater' like system. I bet properly setup side surround in front of the listing area could really fill things in well if used properly.
sunburnwilly
Your last statment is right on ! A pair of K-Horns and a Belle center could rival most home theatres in a modest size room . No need for added effects , old school Dolby Pro-Logic would suffice .. IMO FWIW

I think having 2 side surrounds (RS-7's sitting on top of my RF-3's) adds more depth to side effects in my HT.

sfogg
"old school Dolby Pro-Logic would suffice .. " Uggh.... it wasn't great 10 years ago, it is horrible today. Good matrix decoders can do amazing things... DPL isn't one of them. Shawn
sfogg
"Seems like a good compromise to get a 'movie theater' like system." Or do five channels up front to mirror SDDS systems. Shawn
sfogg
"Is anyone running a 9.1 system? I am thinking of up grading from 7.1 to 9.1." What are you doing to use to extract the extra 2 channels? Or are you just going to do channel duplication with two more speakers? Shawn
