BS Button
While I've only got my solid state pre-amp to drive it. Tubes have arrived. Now for the pre-amp!
audiobliss69
Nice! Congrats!
Daddy Dee
That's very nice. The bias indicators and adjustment looks really convenient. If your CD player has a volume control, you could see what it sounds like running straight into the Dynaco.
BS Button
Dee, How can I do that? Just so happens that I do have a volume control on an old Yamaha CD player. What pre should I get. Looking at a Audio Research LS7 used, vs. the Merlin (need to stay under 7 c-notes). I'm under the distinct impression that I'll be needing a loudness or contour button? BS Button
This experiment was unbelievable, it'll show you exactly what your pre-amp is doing to the CD signal, both in strength and alteration. More tube guys need to chime in, please.
BS Button
Mark, I need you to address my other post in two channel. This signal strength stuff has got me miffed?

colterphoto1
Very nice Todd, can't wait to hear it. What is that behind woodog, can it be a PEAVY pa cabinet. For shame. Michael
jt1stcav
IMO, if it's a tossup between a used LS7 or a brand new Merlin, I'd go for Mark's magnificant Merlin. I have nothing against Audio Research, but for your money, a new Merlin is a no-brainer. Your choice, natch...[]
BS Button
Colter, Looks like a BBQ smoker. I dunno? He's still got a pair of Bose. arrggh, but he overrepresents me on the Klipsch side. Best sounding two channel I've ever heard: that Woo...
jwc
Todd, I'm stoked for you. Very anxoius to hear what they sound like on your Corns. Future for me is to get a tube for the CS dbb's.
BS Button
JC, What's the ohm load on those two woofers in a box? Are they in series or parallel. Like I know the freakin difference? It's gonna take a mighty big tube amp I'm afraid, but you've got it covered...I'm sure. Hate to hear all the problems in Mississippi. Ya know, if you're a believer in fate, you could say that I saved these Cornwalls of mine...picked them up in New Orleans if you recall?
jwc
wired parallel....could change it if wanted. Yes, the tube amp would have to be rated down to 2 ohms. This is no joke. I was just about to buy a preconstruction condo in Biloxi. Now all the casinos are gone. jc
Woodog
Very nice Todd, can't wait to hear it. What is that behind woodog, can it be a PEAVY pa cabinet. For shame. Michael [:$] I can explain! When that picture was taken in Sept. 2001, I had just bought a powered head XR-684 and 2 of those HORRIBLE SOUNDING cabinets at a pawn shop for $300. It was pre-Klipsch. I entered the world of Klipsch in June, 2003 (Heresys). I sold those Peavey cabinets later that year while on a trip to Atlanta to pick up my second pair of Cornwalls. I kept the powered head. It is a decent sounding unit, surprisingly, and VERY portable. I used to lug a Peavey KB-300 around for gigs. NEVER AGAIN! BS, The Bose 901's have been permanently loaned/given to a dear friend of mine whose rather cheap speakers disintegrated recently. His family is rather pleased with them. jbsl
What part of the US you in maybe someone nearby would be willing to bring over a tube preamp for you to try. I live in Austin, TX and have a Ground Grid tube preamp and just ordered a Merlin from Mark. If by some chance you are in Central Texas I could bring both over. If your not near me them maybe some other forum member is. Xman
Woodog
BS, I would be happy to let you use my Scott 355 for a tube pre-amp listen. It has Telefunken 12ax7's and really sounds smooth. While I don't think this is the route you are wanting to go, it *does* sound nice. The Merlin will undoubtedly sound better (but lacks the loudness countour I love so much). My 355 will ultimately be sold to some unknown person who wants a phono stage and a tube tuner. Woo
BS Button
Woo, The loudness or contour button is something that seems to be a major sticking point with me. I too would like to have a tube pre with rather than without. What other options are there? I suppose that I could pick up a subharmonic synthesiser for dirt cheap, but??? It does not appear that there is a good new pre with a contour button that's not a gajillion bucks?
