Michael no doubt the ALs are train wrecks. Comparatively speaking perhaps the worst crossover Klipsch produced IMO. I am still amazed at the difference in sound quality when I put in my ALK universal A series replacements. It was like a blanket was pulled out of the middle of each squawker horn. The truly sad thing is until you make the change, or are fortunate enough to get a demo, you dont know how much better your La Scalas can sound can sound. Enjoy!!

I just replaced my AL crossovers with a pair of Bob's AA/A crossovers and they sound great. I have to say though that they didn't sound bad before I replaced them. Mine were made in 86 so maybe my AL's caps weren't bad or worn out or do they just go bad from getting old? Now, the crossovers Bob made for my Georgians made a world of difference. I highly recommend them for anyone with Georgians.

If your AL's look like the one in Michael's picture above, then all of the tweeter caps are probably fine (though not of the highest quality). The large 13uF PIO motor run capacitor in the center of the board is borderline. The main problem in this case is the circuit, which is not favored by most. Of the stock networks, the Type A is probably the most popular. With new caps employing a polypropylene dielectric -- you get oodles of rich detail and transparency. One has to go a bit deeper into the pockets to better it.

A few others around here need to give Dean's crossovers he built for me a try these things are really something special. I've used Original type A's and AA's, New Type A's, Type A's with Auricaps & Hovlands, ALK's and I like these new beast's the best. I couldn't tell you exactly what the heck they are but they sure sound great.
