sunburnwilly
Some kind of squash ?
mungkiman
I believe it is a gourd, that when young and green can be cooked and eaten like squash. When mature and dried, they are peeled, de-seeded, and sold as a household product. The seeds are black, and smaller than pumpkin seeds. seti
Haven't seen one of those in years my parents used to grow them. If I remember correctly they grew one almost two feet long.

dragonfyr
A loofah from the land of the Umpah Lumpas. A terribly invasive carnivorous species that is displacing native species and depopulating West Virginia as we speak. Or is that Kudzu? boom3
Yeah, that's a loofa. Some friends of mine grew them when they were popular in the 80s as shower scrubbers. The chore of peeling, de-seeding and drying was too much trouble so they gave up.
mungkiman
Yes, it is a Loofa. Until recently I believed that Loofa grew in the ocean as a sea sponge. In the right climate, they dry on the vine and are easy to peel when dry. As a dried gourd, they sound like a mini rainstick when upended. Thanks for your interest.
