Heresy upgrades

swells

Recommended Posts

I have read in a number of posts,

that upgrading a crossover can be a simple as replacing old capacitors.

I was going to post this earlier, but have since decided to put my 2 cents in

there as well. "Swap out those old capacitors. I must say

however, I had noticed a decline in performance in the past few

months. ie clarity, dynamics and imagery. I believe I had a

cap or two that were on their way out to pasture, maybe more so in on speaker

than the other. I replaced them with Solen Film & foil and fast

caps. I have to say; from where the Heresy's were a few weeks ago to

the music that they are reproducing now is incredible. Better than when they

were new, well, thats actually kind of hard to say. After all, that was

almost twenty years ago lol Imagine,

taking a twenty year old pair of speakers and do a relatively simple upgrade

and they are like new again, maybe even better. Thanks for the insight guys.

What a great forum.

Jantzen Audio has just released a line of capacitors that fall in the same price range as the Dayton Audio and Solen metallized polypropylenes. I've been a long time user of their inductors, which I personally think are brilliantly designed. I'm moving to their capacitors as my lower cost solution.

Talk about encouraging a troll. Tommy has used the same "joke" only about twenty times already. He needs new material.

Here's a better one:

An orchestra is playing Beethoven's 9th Symphony. There is a passage in

the middle when, for about 20 minutes, the bass violinists have nothing

to do. So they decide to slip out to a bar and drink a few beers. After

a while one says, "Hey, we better get going."

But another says, "No, wait. I tied several pages of the conductor's

sheet music together, so we'll have a couple of extra minutes while he

sorts it out."

So they stay for another round. Finally when they go staggering back to

their places. It was the bottom of the ninth, the score was tied, and

the bassists were loaded.

$10.00 would be nice, but the ones I bought came

out to be $100.00(Can) inc shipping.

SE200 $15.91/ea x four

PB3300 $10.95/ea x two

The Heresy is not everyones "cup of tea" as is evident

from the wood chipper joke. lol But that's ok, not everyone or every

speaker is perfect. The dual DPL12 Infinite baffle sub makes up for

a lot of the missing bass that the Heresy lacks.

Excellent. You did good. I think the Solen Film and Foils sound very good. You're gonna like it.

Like everything else in this nutty hobby, you get to diminishing returns very quickly. I used the Janzten capacitors for prototyping my networks after I got the Trachorn and Beymas in, and I thought it all sounded very good. I've sinced moved to fully loading my networks with AudioCap Thetas (which really tore a hole in my pocket). More detailed and cleaner sounding for sure, but apparently what I consider to be a good deal of difference, many others consider to be an incremental shift in signature. I've come to realize that most just don't care all that much about incremental shifts in signature. I do believe the lower priced caps in a "better" network nets better sound than the expensive film and foils in the stock networks. This is just my personal opinion -- so take it for whatever you think that might be worth.

I love the Heresy -- I think it's a great sounding speaker. On the floor in a corner, they sound great to me. Once elevated, and/or moved away from walls and corners -- a subwoofer is a must. No sub, and I believe the network needs to be modified to bring the top down.

The Heresy used to be this one particular guy's favorite speaker in its

class, but now he claims he can't stand it. We're not talking about

changing one's mind during the course of years of experience, either.

So you're right, not everyone is perfect.

Thanks for the part numbers. Makes it easier for the rest of

us! Wow, that's still more than I spent on Auricaps and Solens to

update my KHorns AA's.

How old should they be to be replaced? My KHorns and La Scalas

are much older than my single Heresy, so I never considered doing that

on it.

(Strangely, people on the Quebec Audio & Video Forum shy away from Solen caps; they say they sound grainy!)

Thank's Dean.

Yes, I considered upgrading the

crossover. I believe that Al's crossover for the Belle would work in the

Heresy, but I finally decided that the cost was too much. I

am quite happy with the results so far. Yes, after

having a sub, I couldn't imagine going without it. That alone brings a

whole new life to the Heresy. I think I have don what I can for the

Heresy and I have gotten hooked on DIY, so I may try to put together a pair of

Jubilee's over the winter. My experiment with a scaled down Khorn made me

appreciate the possibilities of a horn bass bin.

PSG,

From what I am hearing from the Solen caps is grainy, then

the people from the Q A&V forum would have been running out of my house

holding their ears in disgust before the upgrade. lol And perhaps

after too. lol

[:)]

Well, my Heresy is a 1985 (assuming that's what the first two numbers

mean) so it's most probablyworth doing something about the caps.

Thanks for the info!

I recall there's a suggested mod for the Heresy used as a center speaker, so I'll do some forum digging about that as well.
