thebes
Sorry folks, kept trying to get this together last night but every time I sat down at the computer the door would ring and another gaggle of trick-or-treaters would appear. The little darlings ate all my candy, now what am I to do? Aside: WC Fields on wether he liked children answered "Yes, Well done". Next week we give away another Klispch t-shirt. Format's simple: Name of artist or group, name of album, type of music as best you can (rock, blues etc.), and recording format (cd, lp etc.) As usual I'll kick it off with: Steve Wolf and Swing Speak. self-titled, cd, jazz This is a local Washington, DC group that plays a mixture of smooth jaz, swing, latin and a smidge of rythym and blues. A nice chagne of place, suprisingly well recorded and is off the Powerhouse label. So waht do you have to share this week?
TEXASRONANDTRISH
Uriah Heep-Salisbury on CD, rock/progressive rock Heeps best IMHO. Their only TRUE progressive rock LP. The title track is a 16 minute epic, sweeping melodies, crunching riffs. I like all their CD with David Byron as the lead singer, after he left they went downhill fast, Salisbury is their best Ron
Duke Spinner
well ..... since somebody brought up the "best guitar riff " thread .... i'll put up for your enjoyment .. Yngvie Malmsteen ---Seventh Sign true '80's rock, glam vocals, pounding double bass drum, and all, but Smmmooookin' ultra precise neo-classical guitar thru a ton of Marshall model 1987's.... Vai, 'n Satch just can't hold a candle to this totally egotistical shredder............. i have copped so many amazing arpeggio's, tricks, and various other foolery fron Yngvie, it makes other guitarist's, esp the blues guy's ....just slink away when i pull out my 1965 SG Jr.......[]

No Matter What Shape (Your Stomach's In) - The T-Bones Raunchy is my top pick for the CD. But the "Alka-Seltzer" classic commercial song from the past "No Matter What Shape (Your Stomach's In) by The T-Bones". Yes it was the T-Bones. Every song on this CD brings back sounds from the past. Most of the songs have not had any air play of any kind for years. What memories does this CD bring back to you? For me, roller skating! colterphoto1
Been feeling kinda Motownish this week. Got a double CD of Rare Earth out. Something like 36 tunes total. Some you'd recognize, some just really kick it out. Always funky for a bunch of white boys. Michael
nicholtl
A good friend introduced me to The Blood Brothers this week, with their latest and supposedly greatest, album "Crimes." This is loud, screaming, take-no-prisoners punk rock at it's true core roots. If you're into loud, raw, and hard punk - or simply want to see what it's all about - this is a CD that will educate you better than Ms. Honey in the 4th grade. sputnik
I need to thank nicholtl and womanthing - I picked up both of their recommendations from last week. My pick for this week is "Goddess in Progress" by Julie Brown from 1985. I don't know if it's availble on cd - it was a short LP with only five songs and a total running time of 18 or 19 minutes. It's fun music and the lyrics are dead clever. Most of the songs on this LP were featured in the 1989 film "Earth Girls Are Easy" that starred Geena Davis, Jeff Goldblum, and Jim Carrey. Ok, the movie wasn't so great, but the songs are. There is a copy of the LP for sale on ebay right now (no relation to seller). Get a copy or come over and listen to mine. Song titles: I Like 'Em Big and Stupid The Homecoming Queen's Got a Gun Will I Make Through the Eighties? 'Cause I'm a Blonde Earth Girls Are Easy Some lyrics from "'Cause I'm a Blonde": I took an IQ test, and I flunked it of course. I can't spell VW, but I gotta Porsche, 'Cause I'm blonde, B-L-I-N-D. 'Cause I'm a blonde; don't you wish you were me?
skonopa
Me, I am sticking with prog rock, so my pick for this week is: Visionary - Strange but Familier Shores To be honest, I cannot remember if I've already did this one or not, but if I did, I'll change this to something else (such as Evergrey - Solitude-Dominance-Tragedy), otherwise.... This is like Dream Theater meets Queensryche. Track #4, "Media", has a very Queensryche sound to it, almost like something I'd expected to hear on Operation Mindcrime. But track #5, takes on a more Dream Theater type sound. The vocalist, Tony Horstmanshoff, does sound very much like the lead vocalist of Queensryche. Some excellent, and tight sounding guitars as well as just enough keyboard backup, but not overdone. Percussion/Drums comes across nice and clean, and tight. The recording itself is excellent. Very clean and detailed sounding. Does not seem like they are using any compression on this one. It sounds extremely good in both my car and on my home system. theryugobuddy
Live -- "Throwing Copper" Alternative Rock -- This was a blockbuster for them. Very passionate vocals over big chords and crunching songs, Many of the songs "Lightning Crashes" "Iris", "White, Discussion" and a few others were all over rock radio-- Every time I re-visit it--it rocks-
RichardP
Live -- "Throwing Copper" Alternative Rock -- This was a blockbuster for them. Very passionate vocals over big chords and crunching songs, Many of the songs "Lightning Crashes" "Iris", "White, Discussion" and a few others were all over rock radio-- Every time I re-visit it--it rocks- That was one of my favorite CDs of that time period; "I Alone" was the main hit from that album, right? Live seemed extremely promising, but haven't heard much from them for several years. I have a couple of their subsequent CDs, but they aren't nearly as good as TC. I will go back a decade with my recommendation: Herbie Hancock's 1984 CD "Sound System." Genre is "jazz-fusion-synth-funk," nearly all synthesized music. I think his "Future Shock" CD was more well known, at least the title cut was an early MTV video (remember those weird robotic assemblages?), but I like the cuts from SS a little better. It's very catchy, with a lot of very interesting sounds layered upon layers. I know some of his releases of that genre have been remastered; mine is the original, and I bet any remaster will punch up the bass a bit, as it is not quite as thumpy as many modern recordings. The only downside of this CD is the length, at only 33 minutes.
