edwinr
So khorns & LaScalas sound good in a small room, but Corns don't? (scratching head). I've tried so many different speakers in my listening room of double brick construction with dimensions of around 20 feet by 18 feet by 2 foot 6 inch ceiling, that I've become confused because speakers that should work well..., don't. And some that shouldn't work, sound really good. Go figure...
DrWho
First of all, aren't your khorns improperly sealed, Meagain? Or did I miss a thread somewhere where you corrected for the oddities of your room? It's hard to keep up with everything you got going on (though it sounds like you guys are having lots of fun over there). anyone that thinks a Cornwall can hang with a Klipschorn on any level is deluding themselves. Well of all the khorns (3 dedicated rooms) I've heard so far and all the cornwalls I've heard so far (too many situations to count), I would without a doubt go with cornwalls. Even if someone gave me khorns as a gift...I would give them some serious listening just to be sure, but I would most likely just sell them and buy lots more cornwalls. meagain
Who - Why do you say you'd take a Cornwall over a Khorn? What do you feel the Cornwalls do better than the Khorn at? woodsman
Lisa, glad you finally went with tubes. You seem to have been thinking you would be losing something. You forgot to look at how much you would be gaining. Sure am glad I discovered tubes myself. Now I wonder, what took me so long. DrWho
Someday you will make it over, and many myths will be dispelled. We shall see [] Though I totally want to believe you I can't deny actual experiences with the speakers...so it can't really be chalked up to myths or dillusions. Heck, I want to like the sound of the khorn - it's a fricken cool speaker. Who - Why do you say you'd take a Cornwall over a Khorn? What do you feel the Cornwalls do better than the Khorn at? Or the Khorns do worse at? Or is it an accross-the-board deal for you? Well I guess you can pretty much chalk it up to the fact that a ton more music just simply sounds better on the cornwall than it does the khorn. And sure there are a few exceptions to the rule - like music that was recorded on khorns and well recorded percussion stuff. I know I'm in a minority opinion here and the first thing people do is blaim the source material...but such claims don't explain why it sounds freakin amazing on other systems...Heck, I've brought all of these recordings into various studios just to check if I'm crazy...nope, sounds like a good recording there too. To sum it all up - I think the khorn has very tubby bass. The integration into the midrange isn't all too hot either and the overall speaker has a wierd timbre to it (which I associate to time-delay issues - yet another unpopular subject). Some claim this as accuracy - I claim it makes my favorite music sound like crap...I'll stick to the speakers that I get more enjoyment out of. I'm also not a fan of the K400 (khorn/lascala midrange), or the K600 (heresy cornwall midrange) and the K77 ain't all too great of a tweeter either. The ideal speaker for me would actually be the cornwall bass mated with the Chorus II squaker and K79 tweeter - I've not actually heard this combination, but in my chorus II versus cornwall side by side comparisons I felt this would be the best of both worlds. Is the cornwall bass accurate? Heck no - but it fricken sounds awesome with all types of music at all volumes. I get my fair share of accurate sound in the studio - and believe me, you don't want that in the home. I should probably round out this post with things I like about the khorn and things I don't like about the cornwall, but you get enough of that from everyone else [] I just mention this because I don't think the khorn sucks and the cornwall is the epitomy of all audio. But I do feel the cornwall is the better speaker...and that's my humble honest opinion stemming from my own experiences.
meagain
Hmmm... And I see my khorns as having significant better quality bass over the Corns. Tighter for sure. I find the Cornwalls more boomy, less tight. You don't mean "tubby" as being "boomy" do you?
DrWho
You don't mean "tubby" as being "boomy" do you? No - tubby is a much different sound than boomy. Bang on the side of your bath tub and then imagine that timbre overlayed onto the music - that is what tubby sounds like. (I associate it to resonances in the 100-300Hz octave...way too much cardboard). Just curious...what source material do you feel the cornwalls are boomy with? I would argue that a good portion of that is actually on the recordings...try listening on a few good pairs of studio quality headphones and you'll see what I'm talking about. meagain
I thought that's what you meant by tubby. Source material - same stuff we used on the khorns. Just find the Khorns have tighter bass. Cornwalls boomier. On everything. Will play around with Cornwall placement to see if we can get it better.
