djk
I have a 3.2Ghz machine at work, and we have a T3 phone line. I down loaded a 34Mb file tonight from Crown, took just about a minute. The software her is the slowest I have ever seen, even slower than what was running years ago and all I had was a 14.4K with a 25Mhz machine. Who is the bigger idiot: The programer that writes code assuming everyone owns a Cray? Or the companies that buy this garbage and foist it off on their users? Doc Robin
It is rather slow but it seems that it is not the only site that is running slow. Bill
Jay481985
probably some stupid DDoS going around......... Yahoo was down for a few minutes today too....... DDos is Denial of service where they get random computers like your's and infect it with a virus that tell the computer to go to this site and call it (just like when you enter a website address) and keep doing it like 100 times a second, get enough computers and you drag the servers to the knees or make it go down. I highly doubt it was the forum software itself.

DrWho
T3's really aren't all that great when it comes to latency. Sure, they've got insane bandwidth, but they are slow as heck when doing small file stuff (like web browsing). But it's still an issue on the Klipsch side. It's mostly the fault of the forum software and I wouldn't lay blaim on the klipsch webmaster because there was no way in the world he could have anticipated some of the problems that have been going on. And the company that designed this software didn't optomize the design for the huge use this forum gets. I've done a lot of forums in my day, and this forum is one of the busiest. Hundreds of people posting all day long and searching the crap outta everything is a major drain on a server that isn't even dedicated to this function. Couple that with strict budgets and it's a recipe for disaster. I don't think a lot of people realize that the old forum was on the brink of disaster either - which is why the move took place. A mostly functional forum is a lot better than none at all.
colterphoto1
PUT TWO HAMSTERS IN EVERY CAGE, but this time put males with males and females with females. Remember what happened LAST time we put two hamsters in every cage? M
Daddy Dee
Maybe a hamster on crutches... Dr.Who. what sort of solution would you (or others) think would work to improve the speed and limit downtime of this forum? I'm not a technical type, but am curious about it. Jay481985
theear should answer this, he sells products for server type systems.... Other than that, I wonder if they are using scsi harddriver and to be honest, Hometheaterforum.com and avsforum get alot more traffic and still quicker and never crashes. They must be doing something right.
DrWho
For starters, the search function needs a total overhaul. There's this tradeoff you have to pick between fast searches + tons of HD space or slower search + little HD space. This forum is using about as much HD space as possible - so ya, the search is fast but it's totally draining on the computer all the time (which in turn slows it all down). The downside is you usually can't just arbitrarily change how the search function works without affecting the entire architecture of the forum... Secondly, as much as I like the fancy java script, it is a drain on the browser's computer and is ultimately the root cause for all the browser incompatibilities. It is a serious headache to get everything working the same for everyone and even then it will never be perfect. So I would move to a new type of interface that isn't so java script intensive...you probably can't avoid it altogether, but it can certainly be minimized a lot further. There are quite a few other things I would change, but they're mostly just my personal opinion and everyone is going to have a different one. There are a lot of things I enjoy about this new forum, but I can't see it getting fixed without a total overhaul (which would be the responsibility of community servers, not klipsch). I doubt that's going to happen anytime soon so really an entirely new software package is needed....and that's a crap load of headache and a bit scary considering the rough transition this forum had. Moderators Amy Posted July 12, 2006 Moderators Share Posted July 12, 2006 theear should answer this, he sells products for server type systems.... Other than that, I wonder if they are using scsi harddriver and to be honest, Hometheaterforum.com and avsforum get alot more traffic and still quicker and never crashes. They must be doing something right. I know ours has issues (specifically, the search function storing WAY too many files every time a search is done), but I'd suspect those two forums you mentioned that get a ton of traffic also have them monitored 24/7. There are times when this forum goes down briefly and we're able to fix it with minimal interuption, but we cannot when no one is here. I would imagine they have brief downtimes, also, but not many would notice. I'll try to find out if we have any lingering effects from the problem yesterday. Jay481985
I meant no disrespect but since avsforum and hometheaterforum are a business to stay up and have the ads while klipsch does not have 3rd party ads, its different. They probably have 24/7 monitoring too. With the search problem, maybe if you limit the search to the same thread only once than having the same thread shown on the search 80 times would help the server alot. Also do a time restricted search is what I found most convienent and quickest. Maybe start with the last month only?
