damonrpayne
What's to stop me from buying 3 regular RCA or composite video cables for $6 each and using that to replace a $100 component video cable? Is the internal construction any different?
mas
The primary difference is the impedance, as the video cables are ideally 75 ohm, and typically, RCAs are not. The impedance match will reduce the amount of reflections and standing waves that will degrade a video signal. Belden's double foil, bouble braid RG-6 cable is a reference standard in the video field. As far as which manufacturered cables are actually built to the spec...I wish I could be of more help! If you prefer to make your own (equal to all of the cables used in the various headends and video studios the world over), give me a holler. Its easilyt done, with the most critical part being the use of the proper crimp tool (of which their are several - albeit expensive on the market) which will maintain the 75 ohm impedance. I suspect that you can easily borrow them for a few minutes with a call to your local cable company. Or if you like, I can make them for you. 48n123w
I'm not an expert, but I hooked up my friend's home theater. We used regular RCA cables for the component tv and digital coax connections. Everything works fine.
Fish
You should be able to buy very good component cables,6ft for about $20.
damonrpayne
Sure, but I am looking at something like 30'-35' because someone wants to plug a game system into my HT so its a temporary hack.
JJkizak
I like the ones with the red-green blue colors because they are easy to hook up and they work better than coat hangers.(That's supposed to be funny) You can find better deals than 100 bucks, they are usually around 15 or 18 bucks for 6 ft. I've used sat/cable TV cable for stuff like this. Most folks have some lying around....seems like when every you get a new sat or cable reciever...it comes with 50ft of it. You could re-terminate it with "monster" tm RCA connectors available at most audio stereo install shops, or use an f-pin to RCA converter.
