Klipschorn Purchase - What have I done?

I am now the proud owner of this set of horns (K-C-FR, 1C992 and 1C993).

I bought them from the original owner.

Now what do I do?

I don't have room for them, but I'll make room. They're finished in a cherry veneer. Quite nice, but old.

I would like opinions on needed upgrades. I will change the xovers, but to what kind? And probably the grill cloth.

The xovers are type 1R. Tweeters k77 (2453, 2473), squawkers k55v (3481, 3516).

Yikes!

Congrats. Very nice looking Khorns.

I think refreshing the caps in the crossovers would put you in good shape. Not really an upgrade, but just replace with caps of the same values. It's the closest thing to returning to factory spec available. Contact Bob Crites (BEC) on this forum. He can sell you parts for a diy project or do the job himself. Either way, your Khorns will sound sweet, really sweet. The good news is that this is not an expensive proposition.

Wow, those would be 1964 vintage? Much more unique with that finish and grill cloth? Can you keep the appearance the same? I'd hate to see them refinished to look like all the newer 80's, 90's and 00's. They have a very retro look to them although I know that doesn't always fit with the rest of the home.

Agreed- Fresh grille cloth if need be, but retain that ubercool vintage look at all costs!

Beautiful Khorns. I think they look great the way they are. I don't own a pair, but, someday I surely will. I know that if they were mine, I would leave them as close to original as I possibly could. I love the old vintage stuff. Congratulations on the purchase. I hope you got a good deal on them. At the chance of being perceived as a bit nosey, how much did you pay?

I agree with that. I am a bit paranoid of the whole idea of shipping when it comes to electronics and speakers, so I will only pickup these things. I see a lot of interesting deals offered here and have no way to take advantage of them. I was pondering the purchase of a Blueberry preamp, but chose not to because of the shipping thing. I hope you enjoy your new Khorns.

If you were buying a new or used Blueberry, if Mark's packing materials were used, it would arrive just fine. SPeakers, being the size they are, is another matter entirely.

Wow those look great! I am a sucker for cherry. I have owned a pair of cherry Cornwalls now with Gilbert, and currently own pair of Cherry Belles. As I understand it Cherry was a special order so speakers in cherry are much more rare than the other "normal" options. I would hesitate replacing the grill cloth unless you really have to. You cannot get, as far as I know, cloth that is as cool as the original.

Upgrade the crossover and enjoy! If you ever think of selling drop me line!

Hi Josh,

The cherry veneer was done by Bill Perlick, the original purchaser. So it's not from the factory. He did a real nice job on it. Bill is a retired "rocket scientist" having work on the Mercury, Gemini, Apollo, Skylab and Shuttle missions as a payload specialist.

As far as the cloth goes, I agree with you and the others who like the look of the original cloth. It looks 10-50. (Rates a 10 at fifty feet). But a 2-10. Its forty years old and looks it. So I will replace it if I can find it. The wife has seen all the replies and has decided the look of the original cloth is the way to go, even if my cornwalls have black cloth. Likewise the 2.2v's.
