MichaelMyers12
Hi I want to know how do you clean the woofers on your speakers? I use a damp cloth to clean the dust of my woofers. Thank you.
Daddy Dee
I've done that too with a really dirty woofer. Care must be taken though, the cones are paper.
jheis
I'd suggest the standard method of cleaning electronic components: a small paint brush lightly wisking the surface while holding a vacuum cleaner nozzle about an inch away. Colin
If lint, dust and dirt on your cones are the problem, I would try something simple and made for the job. A lint roller for clothes can be found at the local dollar store. This, or large pieces of sticky tape, are perfect for lifting lint and dust off of paper cones, without getting them wet. On the older Heritage speakers, the large woofers had small rubber surrounds that did not move very far. They had more surface and less movement. These last decades without treatment. On the newer speakers and sub-woofers, the huge rubber surrounds allow the smaller cone to make enormous excursions. They have less surface, but more movement. On drivers with large rubber surrounds, a thin wiping of mink oil is said to help keep the surround supple and from drying out.
boom3
Tocatta and Fugue, and maybe some Black Sabbath....no, seriously...woofers do not need to be cleaned of superficial dust or animal hair. The dust does not interfere with the woofer's operation, and any change to its mass is insignificant. The risk of damaging the woofer by "cleaning" outweighs any aesthetic benefits. However, if you feel you just must do some housekeeping, a soft brand new sash brush is all you need.
JJkizak
I have never cleaned my woofers. I have looked at them, touched them, massaged them, and wondered why they stay so clean, and wondered why the little critters don't munch on them for breakfast. whamo
Compressed air works good too. Not to high of a pressure though, say 30 psi and a paint brush, brushing gently. That helps get the years of accumulated dust and mung out of them.
Colin
jackson, this is Florida, 90% of the time when I not working, I am running around in shorts, but it is cold right now, almost 50s, so I guess I will put on some long panst! Groomlakearea51
Yah, it's getting cold here in south Florida; had to get out of the pool on Sunday afternoon as the temperatures started to drop down into the 60's.... [ip] It got down to 43 last night as that big front from up north has been coming through. Staying on topic... a shaving brush will work. On "grody" woofers (the kind with about 1/2" of dust...) a small vaccum schnozzle with the brush attachment works fine. On a couple that I have ended up with on ocassion which had what appeared to be food debris (???), I take a cotton cloth and dampen it, wring it, etc. Key = barely damp. Barely damp = sorta damp to the touch, but leaves almost no marks on a a formica/ melamine counter top when wiped across it. You can wipe the cone, very lightly, in a circular direction, and often it will clean up. If you do that, you have to make sure you wipe the whole cone lightly and even though it looks like it's dry, let it sit for at least a day. Colin
if shaving brushes work, then soft paint brushes will also work, women have sets of soft brushes too, but I am not sure what they use them for!
oldtimer
They use them for make-up dadgum your hide! I suppose if you are not privileged/savvy/smart/sexy/attractive/wealthy enough to be around them you would not know this. (Each slash stands for and/or).
