Spongeworthy
I have an mid-80s NAD Integrated Amp that I want to use to drive my deck and patio speakers that I just installed. One of the channels has a scratchy, static sound to it. I am thinking it might need a good cleaning. Any other ideas or recommendations on how to clean it up? What product do you suggest using? Thanks for any help.
BogusMalone
Do you mean scratchy when you turn a knob or all the time? Most here would recommend Deoxit products. Do a search for Deoxit and see if that answers your question. Hope this helps.
Daddy Dee
Deoxit is highly regarded. I can't remember if Radio Shack has it. If not, they have an alternate electronics cleaner that leaves residue. Just turning the pot vigorously many times, even without cleaner, will knock down some of the scratchiness.
Spongeworthy
The scratchiness/static is constant and doesn't occur when moving the pots. It's also in one channel only. Do you still think a cleaning will help this one?
thebes
Probably time to got back and start with the basics. Swap the speaker wires and see if sound follows. Then swap cables and see if sound follows. Also twist any knob (bass, treble, volume) for the affected channel back and forth about 20 times and listen again. Report back. That's my limited advice but all I can offer.
Spongeworthy
Yes, I switched the ICs and the sound definitely followed. It is clearly an issue with the left channel. I tested it with a couple of other amps to isolate the problem.
fini
For some reason, I'm inclined to suggest a sponge. Either that, or liver paté essence and my cat.
Spongeworthy
Usually, I am right on with Fini humor. Big fan. Are you suggesting that it's cooked. That one kind of flew right over me.
fini
Well, perhaps you have not been keeping up with my most recent posts. Otherwise, I'm sure you would be L-ing OL! Uh, maybe.
thebes
You switched Ic's but did you do the same for the speaker wire?
soundbound
Hit the tape monitor a few times and see if that helps too. Work all its switches a few good times. I'd deoxit them all good and work them on and off some times while spraying them.
Spongeworthy
Well, I went to Radio Shack and bought some Deoxit as suggested. I followed directions and used it very liberally while working all of the controls. Presto. The thing sounds as good as it ever has. Deoxit is worth every penny after I was sticker shocked for 17 bucks for two tiny aeresol cans. Worth every penny. Thanks to all for helping me get this fixed.
