LaS for auditoriums, Bell as an afterthought. The frequency responce of the CW being closer to the cornerhorns than any other and the bass-reflex being naturally "back"for that "curtain of sound". And a bonus of "slam" for the Khorns. Admittedly, never listened to the combo. When were LaS designed? Don't get me wrong, I used them as centers with cornerhorns in the past. Terry

  6. I hesitate to answer for the same reason that Master John Ellis will not reply to the question. Owned Klipsch from 1968 to present. Cornwall, Khorns, LaS, Mod-H, multiples of, and at present, the chosen CORNWALL bass bins.(X 4 in 2 channel) Came here to teach PWK, but the teacher became a student. Here now to learn tubes and potential CW mods. 54 years old, and as always, IB Slammin with modified CWs. Terry

I see the horns are screwed to the original mounts, that damps them too. On late model 811s Altec didn't weld the vanes together but instead filled the gap with rubber. You can cut the welds with a sawzall and fill the kerfs with silicone. This really works and isn't some nutso audiophile tweak. Adjust the crossover taps to your preference, don't worry about it. The original A7s had a baffle that surrounded the 811s, look at the Altec info on the Sound Practices site, if it still exists. If the speakers don't make enough bass augment them with a good sub. If they don't make enough highs augment them with a Fostex horn tweeter at 10khz. A7s ain't perfect but are very good by themselves and a can be the basis on an absolutely first-class speaker. Nice looking kid. ---------------- Tom, I assume that your recommendations apply to 511-Bs also. But what is a "kerf"? To the touch, the seams in my 511s feel like silicone. Could that be stock? They sure look it. Terry

My questions pertain to potential Cornwall mods, and I hope you have the patience to look past my ignorance and explain your answers. 1. If I were to build a cabinet 2" deeper than the Cornwall, but 4.5" shorter (to maintain similiar cubic volume), AND the drivers and port pointed out a side instead of the front, could I expect similiar performance? 2. If I were to build a corner Cornwall, maintaining the same cubic volume and motorboard, but making a 5 sided box (essentially an enclosed Shorthorn), could I expect similiar performance? They are somewhat smaller (more like an Altec 816)and they work really, really well with Altec 515's or 416. In fact, I actually prefer the 4560's over the A7's (I have both) because of thier size. They take up less space in the living room. If you are in a fairly large city, check with the used pro gear shops. They, meaning the 4560's, are pretty easy to find. ---------------- Oh My !!!!! 13. Shawn, Glad to get the measured K-77 data. I expected as much. In 1973, I ordered my first CW's (verts) and in '75 ordered a second pair (horz). Both pair have been bone stock for some 30 years. Last year, a buddy in Boulder sent me a set of upgraded Xovers for the '75s and I never looked back. Dampening, bracing, new wire, etc. Each mod resulted in a noticeable improvement. The 511Bs & 902s took the prize! I will leave the old vertical horn '73s alone for "old time sake" but am looking forward to what is ahead for the '75s. thanks again, Terry
  14. Thanks, Shawn. Interesting read about the plugs. My diaphragms have the part # 34852 stamped on them. I did not see that number listed on the Altec BB, so I must assume that they are aftermarket products from GPA. They sound great, but then I don't have the older ones for comparison. Should I allow that to influence a two/way project? Takes away some of the incentive if they can't get up past 17hz. Have you removed the plugs from your drivers? Thanks for the help. Terry

That worked out very well with my LaScala's an 511B and 902-8Bs though I think I have a different style of diaphragm then you. See: http://www.hostboard.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi/ubb/get_topic/f/3729/t/772 http://www.hostboard.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi/ubb/get_topic/f/3729/t/771 BTW, $400 for a pair of new 902 drivers is a great price. Used they tend to go at least 2/3s that, I got lucky with mine. Shawn ---------------- Shawn, I tryed the sites above and got error 404. What are they? Yes the 902A and 902B are a bit different. I believe that the B model has a heavier diaphragm, excursion limiting cap and can handle more power. Terry

They are original Altec parts and are the later version (push on terminals instead of screw terminals) of what was considered the best sounding diaphragms Altec ever offered. Very light diaphragm for the best high end response though they were fragile compared to their other offerings. Bill @Great Plains is apparently considering putting this version back into production again. Shawn ---------------- Shawn, Read my reply to Al. I changed the diaphragms, they were fragile and had push on terminals. Very strait forward instalation. I mated them to 511's and the Cornwall mids came alive!!!!! Again, I think that they are offered as a special order item, and worth every penny at $400.00. At this time, I am still using the K-77's but intend to try them in a two-way system. Regards, Terry

Al K. ---------------- AL, I first spoke with Bill asking if he might have a pair of 902's (used) laying around. He told me that GPA manufactured them and I ordered a pair with 16ohm diaphragms to use with 511B's on my '75 CW's. About ten days later, I called to ask about the shipping date and he told me that he had made a mistake, and they had been shipped with 8ohm diaphragms. I received the drivers one day with the 8's and the 16ohm replacement diaphragms the next. As I suspected, the 8's were a little "hot", so I installed the 16's and they were wonderful. To answer your question, he builds them in 8ohm & 16ohm. I assumed that he had shelves of 902's in stock, but now I beleve that he hand builds them on "special order". He charged me $400.00 plus shipping. Having looked at used prices for 902's on ebay and elsewhere, I thought the price was reasonable. The replacement diaphragms are $113 per pair. No "pig in a poke" concerns with this guy. Regards, Terry

I haven't opened mine up yet to see what happens with removing the loading cap. Shawn ---------------- Shawn, I just got a pair of 902-16A's from Bill at Great Plains. He has the old Altec tools and dyes and manufactures 902's. He calls them 902-16C. Fair price, but a bit slow. I believe that he builds them "on order". Terry

The gentleman in Morrilton was just moving in. By now, I suspect that the horns are clean, oiled, and blasting old "big band" tunes. He claims to have owned many pairs of Khorns in his life. He told me that he had (I can't remember how many) several children, and when they grew up and moved away.....they left with a pair of cornerhorns. 20. Mr. P, Thanks for the K-33 coil and gap explanation. On your recommendation, I will replace the other woofer as well. Welcome to the asylum! Terry
  21. Visited Hope and PWK years ago. What is the drive time from the LR area to Hope? As I remember, anywhere to Hope is a long drive. What time frame are we looking at for the gathering? A few days.....A few weeks? Most of the "brothers in Hogs" will need to go back to work at some point. Arkansas is the "land of opportunity"........If you are not careful, AR. will give you the opportunity to starve. Terry
  22. Hey Brothers of the Hog, Jesse and Lee, I know an elderly gent in Morrilton who has the most beautiful matching rosewood Cornerhorns and Bells (all three signed by PWK) in his LR. When I was there, he and wife were just moving in to a large, new (older house). There were generations of Mac preamps and power amps on the floor, both tube & SS all covered with dust. I went upstairs to find four more Klipschhorns and old Luxman amps, Mac tuners, an old Dyna tube set and a collection of Empire and Thorens TTs. Some with Rabco SLT arms. When I picked myself up off the floor.....I went into the bathroom and locked the door............ The old dude loves showing off for the "young bucks". Some things do not change with age. He was just moving in. What was the first thing in place and connected? You got it, the Khorns & Bells. Time permitting, we could.................... Regards, Terry

If you are still using it as a three way it is very likely the 902 has a better top end then the K77s. I certainly found that to be the case with 902-8Bs and swapped my La Scalas to a two way setup with the 511B/902-8B on top. Shawn ---------------- Shawn, Now that things are more "stable", I am looking forward to testing and tweeking. The 2-way is something that I will certainly play with. I have a set of 8ohm diaphragms to try and will even A/B the 902 with the K-55. (just for fun) The 511-Bs have opened up a whole new world to me. I aasume that you are crossing at 500hz. Do you notice a hole going from 400hz to 500hz? Does the LaS bass horn fill the gap? The reason I ask....I am using a pretty much stock crossover. Butterworth W/ hollow core and Solen caps. Just wondering if I would hear a difference worth the trouble to cross at 500hz. Thanks, Terry
