You saidNot quite sure what you are telling me here. At present, I run an RCA cable from my Denon Sub preout into the Samson channel 1 input with a 1/4" TRS plug on the end of it... Of course you don't understand what I'm saying -- it's because I told you wrong. The 'Y' cable goes on the RCA end of your SVS cable and will plug in the L/R outputs for you low pass section of the crossover. It's probably easier if I just show you. Click on the Pic. As far as your other question goes, I'm not quite sure. I suppose you could get another cable from SVS and come off of your HT system into the other, non-used channel of your Samson -- and just use the volume control on the front of the Samson corresponding to the system you want to use the sub for. This is a good question for Boa, or TV himself. You could email Tom at SVS -- he would know for sure. It should work though. When you look at it that way it's really a no-brainer. Give me vintage K-horns. I was in the running for those 1954 K-horns on eBay last week -- I just didn't say anything. I offered $2350 plus my Marantz DV-7010. No, I haven't lost my mind -- well, I guess that's debateable. I just finalized a deal on a DJH version of the same amp. I wanted more headroom and it looks like I'm going to get it. Therefore, I'm selling the one I'm presently using. It is the base version, however - it has some upgrades. It has the oil filled coupling caps Kimber select wiring throughout Kimber powercord Volume control for CD direct I just retubed last month. It will come with NOS Siemens EL-34's, NOS 6GC7 RCA Cleartops, and NOS Beckman labeled, Amperex 6922 (gold pins). Don't think I've EVER posted here before. I mean, what constitutes something so 'technical' that it can't be handled by the 2 Channel Forum Let's see, Yesterday I jamming on some 'Godsmack' and my SVS was pumping so much air it blew one of my RF7's over into my tube amp. When I tipped the RF7 back over, I found that one of the RCA Cleartops had dislodged out of the amp and was now protruding out of one of the woofers. I don't know what to do. If I pull the tube out of the woofer, there will be a hole, but I really need that tube for my amp. Mike, I was in the same boat after I bought my AE-25 and SVS CS+/Samson. I did a lot of reading and looking before finding something I felt I would be satisfied with. Please click on the link in my signature below and take a look at the HSU crossover. Nothing fancy here. Just a little black box with volume control, phase button, and bypass (so you can run full range on your mains without the sub). However, you open it up and you will find only the best parts used. Another reason I settled on it is because it uses a 24db/octave crossover for both the low pass AND the high pass. This very important. Most crossovers in subs use a 6db/octave on the high pass. They are primarily designed to work with monitors and satellites, and every sub I had previously used that damn 6db/octave high pass locked in at 80 or 90Hz. With the HSU unit, you can actually CHOOSE where you want the high pass set at, and since it is 24db/octave -- the integration with the sub is totally seemless. With my RF7's I got the 51Hz modules for both the low pass and the high pass. It sounds dynamite. It's very easy to set up. Just run your two interconnects (L/R) from your pre outs on your preamp to the high pass inputs at the back of the unit. You then take two more interconnects (L/R) and run from the high pass crossover outputs to the amplifier inputs (L/R). This takes care of the mains. To do the Samson, you take your SVS supplied interconnect and put a 'Y' adapter on the end (this will give you 'left' and 'right' inputs) and plug into the L/R low pass inputs. Two more interconnects go from the low pass outputs on the crossover to the Samson inputs -- and you are done. Since the full signal is run through the crossover -- it really should be the best you can afford. Mine are in the drop dead gorgeous blonde maple. I also have an SVS CS+ sub -- I like the contrast of the maple and the black behind it. You need to remember that the front baffle of the RF7 is that dark grey/black high density fiberboard. The front of the speaker is black no matter which finish you get. If your dad likes the cherry, get the cherry -- it's very nice looking. Certainly better than the black. Who gives a crap what color the RS7's are -- they are on the wall behind/over your head. I think any would be criticisms have to take a back seat to the very good deal you got. You might find Adcom's presentation of the high frequencies a little 'hot' and 'brittle' sounding through those horns when being played at louder levels. The bass will be fabulous. I have some very light 'crackling' coming from my left channel that is only noticable at low volume levels or through the head-phones. It almost sounds like static but isn't. I have isolated it to the preamp. I guess I need to start replacing tubes one by one until I figure out which one it is. Any opinions on what this might mean exactly as far as the tube itself goes? Oh boy -- here we ago again. B&K makes great MOSFET amps and B&K will sound just dandy with those Belles. They would sound better with tubes however. It takes a while to get a grip on this 'loudness' thing. Sounds like we have something in common. Oh yeah -- put the juice to 'em. With sensitivity ratings around 98db/watt you are going to want at least 40 tube watts. This will easily give you 100db or a little more at the listening position. Also, you should know that tube watts are not like solid state watts. As you crank up solid state it will begin to harden up on you, while well driven tube amps will just get louder without losing their sonic integrity. My AE-25 actually sounds its best if I take it right up to the point of clipping. Other things you might be interested in knowing is that tube amps have this uncanny ability of pushing the sound well past the front baffle of the speaker. The sound is all enveloping and textured. Solid state sound is just 'there'. I sent several people within Klipsch an email asking some pointed questions about the LaScala due to my interest in them of late. My e-mail was forwarded to the engineer responsible for the re-voicing of the new LaScala since the introduction of the new components. I usually don't share private correspondence with individuals out of respect for their privacy and as an aid to keeping the lines of communication open in the event I feel the need to ask another barrage of strange questions. In other words, I want them to feel they can say anything they want and not worry that it is going to come back and bite them in the rear. But this time I just couldn't help myself "Dean: Thanks for your interest in the La Scalas...there is no MDF used in the La Scalas, just Birch ply. What text did you read that stated there was MDF used in their construction? The bad news is the price increase that Jim refered to took place in May so current MSRP is $4000.00 pr without the optional top grille. The Good news is the new drivers are very similar to the previous ones, they just have slightly different response curves which mandated a new network. The tweeter is basically the same design with parts and assembly now being handled by a different source. The midrange compression driver is a similar type but is a different design from a different supplier (if all that makes any sense). Since we were doing a new network we took the opportunity to refine the voicing to give a more balanced presentation tonally. The La Scala is actually the least changed of the three fully horn loaded Heritage models with a more modest improvement/change from the previous version. The Belle is noticably improvedk and the Klipschorn is transformed! To answer your question about the new version being as good as the previous, the answer is it's improved. The other technical changes to the La Scala are the elimination of the old screw type barrier strip, used for attaching the speaker wire, to the use of two pairs of five way binding posts. This facilitates bi-wiring and connection using spade lugs or banana plugs. We also updated the mounting of the tweeter, from being mounted on the back of the baffle and firing through 3/4" hole, to the "Z" bracket system used on the Klipschorn. This method flushes the front of the tweeter with the front of the baffle to reduce diffraction effects at high frequencies. We then dialed in a phase/time compensation for this in the new network since the tweeter diaphragm position was now moved 3/4" forward relative to the plane of the midrange driver diaphragm. No one can give you a complete answer to the question "Which one sounds better?" -- but you, it's very subjective. The RF 7's are, as mentioned, more extended and probably more accurate (flatter response), and image and soundstage better. The La Scala's are two dB more sensitive which will translate into slightly more effortless dynamics. With the lower half of the mids and all of the bass coming out of horns, lower distortion at high playback levels can be expected. Tonally the La Scala is slightly warmer in the mids and has a punchier, though less extended bass. I think some of this discussion should involve the size of your room and how far away you sit from the speakers. With my RF7's, sitting 8 feet away -- I can get 100db at the listening postion with 15 tube watts. This is plenty loud enough for me. Before you throw those KLF-10's into the trash -- you might try an ultralinear offering like the Anthem Amp1 and Pre2L preamp combo. Both of which can be found on AudiogoN for less than $1000 together. 40 EL-34 tube watts which is very musical for the money, and sure to keep you satisfied for some time. Later, if you get speakers with higher sensitivity -- you can sell everything off and get the lower powered tube offerings. Loud is good, and I can certainly relate -- but 130db will leave you quite deaf.
