  1. That is hysterical. Wouldn't you like to have such a thing for slow or otherwise irresponsible drivers? I have often wanted to replace my roadrunner-like "meep" horn on my Toyota and Honda vehicles with something louder and more authoritative. [<)]
  2. ...I thought this thread was about Woodstock.[] Perhaps that was the greatest terrestrial accomplishment, albeit a cultural one, of that year. I have come to enjoy the nonmusical portions of the movie more as I get older.
  3. [Michael said: "The rackmount version of the HPSA amp ( HPSA 1000R ) tested to produce 580 watts into 4 ohms, and this was also with a variac to hold line voltage steady"] Michael, do you mean to say that the amp, which is rated as 500 watts into 8 ohms, and 1000 watts into 4 ohms, only produced 580 watts into 4 ohms? Do you know where this test was published/posted? That number is very low.

    War Movies

The other day I saw, believe it or not, a "feel good" war movie. "Joyeux Noel" is a 2005 French movie about World War I, when the forces in the trenches decided to call a truce for Christmas. It is based on many accumulated reports of actual events and people. For the HT enthusiasts, it does have some battle scenes and big explosions, but that is not the main story line. Highly recommended.
  5. Posting pictures of mushrooms on the internet? To me that's just silly cyberin'.
  6. Not to mention the two daytime repeats of the live morning coverage, and the 2nd late repeat of the evening "enhanced" coverage! You can watch 15+ hours each day. Add to that the hour long "Lance retrospectives" each day.Versus (renamed from OLN 3 yrs ago) unfortunately has made the Tour into the "Lance Show," where about 50% of the content is about him, even though he will not win. Like the Giro, he will likely place in the top 10, but he cannot climb like he use to, certainly not as well as Contador and probably Sastre and A. Schleck. Just like reality shows and lots of other TV, Versus exaggerates and even fabricates drama and conflict, like internal strife among teammates, a sure formula for audience ratings. Even Lance seems to be promoting himself beyond his current abilities. Recall that one stated reason for his coming out of retirement is to promote his LiveStrong foundation, and any attention on him is attention to his cause. He is fairly media savvy, and uses it to his advantage. That said, I will watch every second of it, as it is the only game in town for cycling fans.
  7. To me, this in nothing less than eerily prophetic:
  8. Hi Serra (isn't that a mountain range in California?): fellow Oklahoman here (Stillwater). I have Quartets, so I am familiar with their size, etc. I would list them first here in the Garage Sale section. Being in/around OKC (I presume), your market will be all of OK, southern Kansas, western Arkansas, and of course the big market of Dallas-Ft.Worth. I would not ship them anywhere, due to their size. Only if you could make new boxes as substantial and protective as the original ones would they stand a chance of shipping without damage. Don't be mislead by anyone at a mailboxesetc or ups stores, they will only put them in a flimsy box with styrofoam pellets, which will not protect a 55 lb speaker. Building a substantial box and shipping will add up to a significant percent of the sale price ($50-$100), probably more than most are willing to pay for speakers in that price range. If you are willing/able, you can offer to deliver them up to a certain distance, say 100-200 miles, or meet a buyer midway between. Many of us here have driven further to get desired Klipsch speakers. With that strategy, you could list them on multiple craigslists- OKC, Dallas, Wichita, Ft. Smith, etc.
  9. A late but humorous follow-up to the story: (AP) LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – An 800-pound hog that survived on its own for a week after a truck flipped while on its way to a slaughterhouse has surfaced in a swimming pool at a home near the crash site. LeAnn Baldy, whose house is only yards from Interstate 430, said Monday she noticed her pool was suddenly overflowing and then saw the immersed pig, which was having a drink in the pool. About 90 hogs were in the trailer when it overturned where I-430 meets I-40, and about 60 survived. Officials said they thought the last of them had been caught. Baldy said she found a farmer to take in the pig. A spokesman for Odom's Tennessee Pride said it can't use the hog in its sausage products because no one knows what the hog had been eating in its week on the lam.
  10. If you read much here on the forum, you will quickly learn that having timbre-matched/identical speakers all around creates a seamless immersive aural space. An all Heresy HT with a sub will sound better than almost any other arrangement, unless you spend 10-20 times as much. Older Heresys can be bought on Ebay or Audiogon, sometimes craigslists, for between $300 (fair/good condition) to $500 (great condition). Try to go for ones within driving distance; speakers that heavy are difficult and risky to ship. Older speakers can be updated, if necessary, with new driver diaphragms, capacitors, or whole crossovers, from Bob Crites (BEC on the forum). Most HT receivers can accommodate 5, 6, or 7 channels, although only some movies have even 6-ch soundtracks. This means if you have to buy two more pairs, to get a 5th Heresy for a front center channel, you can use the other of the pair for a rear center. In sum, keep the Heresys as a base from which to build up an incredible system.
  11. Any RCA will work, but it should be shielded. A thin unshielded RCA can pick up electromagnetic radiation from household current in nearby powercords or even though the walls, which has a 60-hz cycle, and will be manifested in a nice 60-Hz hum from the sub.
  12. I wouldn't be surprised if your exact question has not been asked on www.avsforum.com. They have a dedicated subwoofer section, under the Audio section of their forums. Hundreds of subwoofer posts, and I'll bet 1/3 of them are of the form "Best sub: X or Y?"
  13. [...Those who can not laugh at themselves…well, they must lead very long lives..] By this you do mean very long and less enjoyable lives, don't you? I agree. I also agree with nearly all your listed titles. I have liked Jack Black and Michael Cera in most of their other movies. In a similar vein, I like most of the Farrelly Bros movies, and they always have lots of juvenile and bodily function humor. I was surprised how much I liked Smith and James in Hitch. I would never watch Borat or similar humor ever; its too meanspirited for me.
  14. Thanks. I don't think I could make something that would look very good. I can make simple projects like picnic tables, but not fine indoor furniture-grade projects. I perused the Dayton pre-made cabinets on PE, but they were rated only mediocre by purchasers. Wouldn't DIY require software to calculate volume, ports, etc? I would rather pay someone else to do all that.
  15. Well, after a few hours of searching the web, I have found that high-end passive subs in my price range are few and far between. Danley, VMPS, and Elemental Designs make them, but priced from about $700 and up (well into the multi-thousand $ range). Someone posted just my question on AVS last month, and the above-named brands were the only ones mentioned, in addition to a suggestion of pro-audio models, which I know nothing about. What would be ideal in my setup is an SVS CS passive cylinder, and I recall someone here wanted to sell one several months ago. Again, if anyone has any additional information, please help me out. I am open to any type/brand, as long as it is no more than a few hundred $ and is about the same size as powered models. Thanks.
  16. Holy cow, what a flashback! I had that Mad magazine. I might have been 12, 13, 14 at the time. I recall spending much time looking at the lady in the shower.
  17. I am looking for suggestions for a passive sub (enclosure plus driver) to be driven by my PartsExpress 500w external sub amp. For the past year, I have used one of my KW-120 sub enclosures with the PE amp in my two-channel set up with the Belles. However, I have been wanting to put that KW-120 back with its twin in my home theater room for maximum low end (both powered by the KA-1000 amp). I don't want to spend a huge amount (<$500). I have come up fairly empty in my web searches for nonpowered subs (of reasonable quality, anyway). SVS does not make their CS passive series anymore, and PE doesn't seem to have any either. Nothing on Ebay or Audiogon either. Anybody have any ideas, or passive subs they want to sell? I don't really want to build one myself, despite that being the most direct route, nor do I have the option of IB. Thanks for any input.
  18. To be truly descriptive of the forum... Klipsch-ophrenia Horn Porn Klipsch Kult (Drink the) Klipsch Koolaid One of Us, One of Us, Gooble gobble, gooble gobble.
  19. Unfortunately the key word there is "broadcasters," which only refers to over-the-air signals from the 5 networks (via your local stations). Cable and satellite are not regulated to the same degree that broadcast stations are. It remains to be seen whether the 150+ cable channels will be on board with this. You can bet that your local cable company will not agree to, or even be able to, regulate volume on the signals that come into your home. They will likely say they can only retransmit whatever signal they receive from the sources. In 2007, two junior senators (both female, interestingly) proposed similar legislation, and were pointedly ridiculed for spending their time on something "as trivial" as commercial volume, when the nation was mired in war, terrorism, and failing economy.
  20. That's actually very funny and clever. I am amazed that the term has never been used here before.
  21. To clarify Bob's statement that sellers can block "any user for any reason," Ebay allows sellers to block bids from up to 5000 specific bidders, using their Ebay names/user IDs. This seems appropriate after a known bidder has caused problems, as in the case of nonpayers, or other troublesome actions, for the seller in question or other previous sellers. I suppose a seller could look up the feedback of a bidder, and if any past comments looked problematic, they could then cancel the bid and block the bidder. Regrettably, I suppose a seller could also block a bidder who has yet to bid but asks a strange question. Sellers can also block bidders based on several categorical filters, such as anyone with zero feedback, anyone with nonpayment "strikes," lives outside of US, etc.
  22. I don't think Ebay will allow a seller to refuse a bid or sale to a buyer with at least 1 feedback; however, they do allow sellers to refuse bids from buyers with zero or all negative feedback. A zero-feedback bidder obvously has no proven track record, regardless of his/her actual financial responsibility, and may even be a new account/user who just wants to cause trouble, bidding with no intent to pay, i.e., Ebay "vandalism." A negative-feeback bidder means they may be non-payers or caused real problems for some past seller. New legitimate users may need to build up their feedback totals on inexpensive item purchases. As far as the original poster's issue, the seller apparently thought his low feedback total indicated a low probability of him actually buying. It is clear just from reading auction descriptions that many sellers are scumbags, who may not be honest in their auctions and they certainly don't want to spend time answering emails. In 10 years, I have bought about 200 items, and sold about 100, am honest and communicative and have 330+ positive feedbacks (100%). Yet I too have been ignored occasionally by sellers to whom I emailed a question. As a seller, I do have to bite my tongue sometimes: all my auctions state clearly "Paypal only", but I still have buyers who complete the auction then say "can I use a money order...I don't like using Paypal." Also common are persons from other countries who, despite my clearly stated "US sales only," ask about shipping overseas. PS: Tremendous kudos to Bob Crites; over 4000 positive Ebay feedbacks (100%), despite the abovementioned doofuses he has to deal with.
