  1. So Mark could you run the singal center cable out of the DVD player into either the left or right channel into the merlin. Then run one pre out to the amp to the center speaker. I cannot think of any reason this would not work but I might be forgeting something technical. Xman
  2. Final Fantasy disc 2 Akis dream is the best surround sound scene. you hear things all around you and excellent bass. Xman
  3. Could you take 2 Merlin tube preamps and use one Merlin for the center channel in SACD or DVD audio? I have not seen a 3 or 5 channel tube preamp on the market. Probably not worth trying since I don't think these format will last. Xman
  4. I did not understand "resist" until the truck needs a new clutch, brakes, and coolant. Want to get a couple of Merlins and VRDs but have to insure that I can make it to work and pay bills so I can play with the toys I have now. It is a tightrope that you have to be carefull with. Xman
  5. My living room is 15 X 15 X 8 and with the 2004 La Scalas just overpower me most of the time. The KHorns, La Scalas, and Belles really need room to breath to sound good. Don't misunderstand me my LS sound very good at moderate levels but turn them up more and it is a like a physical wall of sound pushing you into the back wall. I know for some of you that is what you want but for me I'm more concerned about the quality of the sound. My KLF 20s I could crank up and they would sound very good. I think people read post from forum members who have rooms better suited to Heritage speakers and they have the gear that matches them best and the speakers sound incredible. People read these reviews and want that but they don't have the room and gear for it. They buy the speakers and are disappointed. My advice to anyone who is wanting to get KHorns, La Scalas or Belles with a small room to consider other Klipsch speakers. I am speaking from experience that a small room and La Scalas makes it very hard to get the quality of sound that the La Scalas are capable of giving. Now like I said they sound very good up to moderate levels but in a bigger room with better equipment even at moderate levels they would sound great. The Heritage speakers can require a lot of system upgrades and tweaking to get the best sound out of them if the room is not the right size. Now I'm not saying don't buy these speakers if you have a small room but be aware of what you are getting into before you buy them. For home theater my 3 La Scalas up front sound incredible better than the KLF 20s but for music in my living room the KLF 20s sounded better. Another point about Heritage is the equipment I was using with the KLF 20s did not sound very good with my La Scalas. So I have upgraded and the sound is very good now. The sound is still not quite what I want but close so my upgrade quest continues. Cornwalls, KLF 20s or 30s, Fortes, Heresys, and any of the Reference line would sound incredible in a small room with good equipment. Xman
  6. I have 3 La Scalas up front and it made a big improvement over my C7. If I remember right 80% of the sound comes from the center speaker so a La Scala or Cornwall would work. Xman
  7. I have had mine since 2001 and paid $1800 for it. It worked very well with my KLF 20s, C7, and SB3 for rears. It does music very good and home theater great!! If you want to do 7.1 then you need to get a amp for those speakers but the receiver has 7.1 on it. I have not heard the Yamaha so can not compare the 2. For $300 make sure there are no issues with it. Xman
  8. I'm having trouble seeing the pic what Luxman ya got? I've always liked luxman gear. I have a 2004 Luxman L505f int amp that sounds great with my 2004 La Scalas. This int amp sounds really good and is also a great preamp. Luxman just came out with a new tube preamp and amp but they would cost around $8000 for them. They also made a 5.1 analog preamp for SACD and DVD audio. It will not accept any digital inputs but you can run the 5.1 analog outputs from the dvd player to the Luxman and then to the amps. It is one of the few preamps I've seen for SACDs and DVD audio in analog only. Of course it's almost $7000 so love to try it but not pay that much for it. Xman
  9. Amy or Trey Can you buy 1/2 the upgrade kit for one La SCala? I have a pair of 2004 La Scalas and a single 1976 La Scala I use for a center channel. I had a new AA crossover made by BEC and it helped. For movies it sounds fine but for multi channel music I can still notice a difference. I guess if it's $1800 to upgrade both speakers than probably $900 for one. If I do this it will have to be next year. Xman
  10. Thanks for the review!! I wanted to get a peach but can't do it money wise so I might be able to get a Merlin. Xman
  11. Thanks for the review!! I wanted to get a peach but can't do it money wise so I might be able to get a Merlin. Xman
  12. Thanks for the review!! I wanted to get a peach but can't do it money wise so I might be able to get a Merlin. Xman
  13. I have a NAD C540 I bought back in 2000. I replaced it last year with the NAD C542 and they both sound great!! If your interested shoot me a email. $ 125 I'll pay shipping if in the US. Xman
  14. Under the tv is the 3rd La Scala. For home theater it is fantastic!! for music they overpower my 15 X 15 X 8 living room at loud levels(cannot talk to the person sitting on the couch next to me). At moderate volume levels(you can talk to the person next to you but your talking loud) they sound very good. Also realize to get the best sound from them they need very good equipment and a good size room. My room is too small and 7 foot celings would not help either. If you love live music then they will give you that feeling of being there. If you watch more movies than listen to music then 3 La Scalas is fantastic but if more music you might want to find someone who has a pair of LS and listen to them before you buy some. New they are over $5000 for 3 of them used you could get 3 for $2000 in good shape. Don't rush into buying 3 La Scalas until you have done more research and have heard them there are always some for sell on the forum or ebay. Xman
  15. "My LaScalas have the crossover that allows you to separate the bass/upper sections by cutting a couple of red wires." My La Scalas are 2004 models so all I have to do is take off the metal connector going from the highs to the lows and then hook up the speaker wire to each. "I would sell off the Monarchy and Cayn amps and go up a level of performance in tube amplification. You do not say how old the LaScalas are but a going over of the crossover network may be a better upgrade to research. Heard a Cayn once and it really was not as nice as a vintage Scott; I think it has a passive preamp. Do you spin vinyl?" I am about to put both Monarchy and Cayin for sell since I need the money for some bills that need to be paid off. Then later I want to get 2 VRDs from Craig and a Peach preamp. I was using my 2004 Luxman int amp as preamp and running the Cayin as a 35 watt amp with very good results. But since I need some cash to pay off some bills I can sell the Cayin and just use the amp on the Luxman int amp. My best friend is coming to Austin this Sat and he installs home theaters in peoples houses so he can help me biamp them. But I probably won't bother since I'm selling the 1985 Luxman preamp with 2 pre outs and the extra amps. Xman
  16. Sorry I forgot that the receiver is your power amp. For music you would go from the merlins pre outs to the receivers main ins. You would have to use the Merlins volume control. Run your left and right analog from your dvd player and the left and right analog from your cd player to the merlin. Sorry I was thinking you already had another power amp. What is your total set up for home theater and 2 channel? Xman
  17. Using this set up I figured out a way to take a regular CD and turn it into a 3 channel recording. Since I have both my A/V receiver and preamp remote signals in one remote I can control both. 1. So I select the Luxman preamp/tube amp combo on the selector. 2. On the A/V receiver I select dolby/DTS surround button. 3. Put in a CD in DVD player and hit play. 4. So what this does is sends the left and right signals to the Luxman. 5. The dvd player also sends a signal to the receiver but the receiver only plays it on the center channel or in mono. 6. You do have to use different volume buttons but once you have the center set I leave it there and just use the volume on the Luxman. So I use the center just to fill in the music from the left and right speakers and it works very good. Not as good as SACDs or DVD audio but it works very good. Since there are not a lot of music on DVD audio or SACDs this gives me another option. I listen to my music from 3:00 AM to 7:00 AM and it gives me the ability to bring up things like vocals without having to have the left and right speakers as loud. I think for this to work you have to have a system selector but maybe there is another way to get the same result. Xman
  18. If you are trying to get the best sound then don't worry about the remote control just hook the DVD and CD players up to the Merlin and enjoy. Now I have a Luxman system selector that lets me run the left and right chanells from my A/V reciever to the system selector and the Left and Right channels from my Luxman preamp and then from the selector to my amp. So if I want to listen to my Luxman preamp I hit button A and the signal goes to my tube amp. For movies I hit button B and the left and right A/V signal goes to my tube amp and I can use my remote to control for all 5.1 or 7.1 channels volumes. From my DVD player I run the left and right analog cables to my Luxman preamp(or a Merlin) and the rest of the analog cables to my receiver. From my DVD player I run the single digital cable to my A/V reciever which sends the left and right channel to the system selector and to the amp. Now I bought a Radio shack system selector and did not sound great but it worked until my Luxman system selector got here from Japan. I cannot tell the difference when I have the selector hooked up or running from the preamp straight to the amp. My best friend used to dj and works installing home theater so I'll do a comparision between the two and see if he can hears anything.
  19. Another question is could I biamp using my Luxman int amp 100 watts and my Cayin TA 30 tube amp 35 watts. I have been using the Luxman int amp as a preamp only running to the TA 30 and not using the 100 watts availbe from the Luxman. The Luxman int amp does not have 2 pre outs like my older Luxman preamp does. I also have 2 Monarchy Audio SM 70 Pros 80 watt mono blocks that I could use for bass but I think I'm going to put them on Ebay. Has anyone biamped and thought it improved the sound? Xman
  20. I have a early eighties Luxman C300 preamp with 2 pre outs. I also have a Luxman int amp with 100 watts and a Cayin TA 30 35 watt tube int amp. If I ran one pair of pre outs to the tube amp and ran the speaker wire to the highs on the La Scalas and then ran the other pre out to the Luxman int amp and to the lows on the La Scalas would I need anything else to make it work correctly? I thought about just trying it but with my luck I would blow things up and be out $5000. Xman
  21. I have a pair of Monarchy Audio SM 70 Pros 80 watt monoblocks or 35 watts stereo that sounded very good with my KLF 20s and La Scalas. I also have a Cayin TA 30 Tube int amp. The SM 70s have better detail and a little better bass and the TA 30 has a fuller, smoother sound with very good details but not as good as the 70s. Also with the right tubes bass can be improved upon. I am going to sell the SM 70 Pros on EBay soon. I don't need a lot of bass and I like the fuller, smoother sound of the TA 30 . My preamp is a SS so with a tube preamp the 70s would sound smoother but I really like my Luxman preamp so I'll sell the 70s. Xman
  22. 3 La Scalas up front and KLF 20 as rears and the RSW 12 tops it off very nicely. Movie Theaters can not compete, except for the huge screen. Xman
  23. I have a pair of SB 3s that I used as rears with my KLF 20s. How big is your room? IF it is big the SB 3s might not work but if not then they might work. I'm using my KLF 20s as rears now with 3 La Scalas up front so I don't have a use for the SB 3s if you want them send me a email. Xman
  24. What equipment do you have? The KHorns need very good equipment to make them sound great. I have a Denon 4800 H/T receiver and my La Scalas sound good but with my Luxman preamp and tube amp they sound very good. I'm still trying to find the right equipment to make them sound great. My living room is 15 X 15 X 8 and it really limits the capabilities of my La Scalas they sound great up to a point but then they overpower me. KHorns need a big room to really get the best sound. Xman
  25. Dr Who My reciever is a Denon 4800 and my dvd player is a Denon 2900 and a NAD C542 CD player. So both are very good but the 4800 is 4 years old so the newer recievers should do a better job. But since my reciever is old I'll run the analog out to my Luxman. I don't see any reason to upgrade my reciever since it can do 7.1. But the very dangereous upgrade bug is telling me I need the brand new Denon 4806. When I get off work I'll go play with the digital conections and compare to analog. Xman
