  1. I have a Denon 1804, couple years old. Within the last year I have noticed a slight hum when it is on. If I very slightly pull up under the front right corner the hum goes away, release it and the hum is back. Suspect something inside is not grounded as well as when it was new. Otherwise no issues.
  2. I travel occaisionally to San Diego for business. Just determined today that I will be there all next week. Fortunately, my locale will be the airport, local hotels bay area and Coronado Island area. Many folks I deal with have stories of close calls as well as friends of theirs who were unfortunate to be in the fire's path and loose their home. Hard to know who is not at their desk and who is at a shelter or a friend's house when I call out there. San Diego is one of my favorite places to visit, but this is not a happy time to be going there.
  3. Very cool, thanks for posting! Something to look forward to for holiday movie, that would be the second time I go to a theater this year........
  4. Are there any good web sites for the Rotel in case it needs some minor repairs? I do not have a model number yet, still waiting to see if the equipment will be available.
  5. Friend at work is considering clearing out some space and may have a set of University speakers, 70's vintage he may part with. Anyone have any experience with these? I think they are Altec related. Might need some advice if these come available, value, woofer surrounds, cap replacements, etc. Might also involve a Rotel 2 channel receiver, no model number yet. Any 70s Rotel experts here?
  6. Check threads within the last month or two with inputs from CustomSteve (pretty sure) and DWI Lawyer trading experiences on high end hearing aids.
  7. Reading some obit articles about Luciano Pavarotti, I saw a mention of a Lascalla opera house or something similar in Milan. Is this related at all to the choice for the name of the LaScalla speaker?
  8. My wife and I have an ongoing "discussion" regarding the pros/cons of these fomats. We do not have a widescreen format TV, 32 inch JVC regular format set is where we're at for now. Anyway, her feeling is that when we play a DVD in widescreen she feels the top and bottom of the image is being cropped. I've always explained that what you're actually getting is the image as the director shot it. Full screen changes the image with pan and scan, etc. Well last night we had a movie with both formats on one disc. So to make my point we looked at some scenes and did an A - B test. At least with this example, I was surprised to see the widescreen reduced the vertical image available (both top and bottom). We did not have a classic example, I've always heard the scene in the Indiana Jones movie with Sean Connery has a scene where the full screen version shows only one actor at a time during a dialog scene whereas the widescreen shows them both for the entire scene. So, I did not have a good example of the "benefit" of widescreen, and she was right that the vertical image was compressed. The interesting thing in the scenes we sampled (The Net with Sandra Bullock) was that the full screen image had more vertical detail. I always thought the widescreen preserved that and gave the wider aspect ratio as well. Are some aspect ratio widescreen productions more likely than others to have this type of vertical compression? This has now become a "discussion" that I'll never be able to win, but I have to at least understand why the full screen version does indeed give more vertical image (and yes, the widescreen does seem to clip the very top of the image). Anyone have good technical links? I'll probably Google this but thought I'd throw it out here. I'll be curious how the full screen DVDs my wife likes will look once we do get a widescreen TV, black bars down the sides I guess.
  9. I have a Dual 1229 which has not been used for probably 10 to 15 years. Two questions. <>First, am I risking seriously damaging the turntable if I just set it up and start playing records? <>Second, how can I tell if the stylus should be replaced? Stanton 680EE cartridge, hundreds of hours of use.<>
  10. Yahoo!! I totally missed this good news thread until Saturday morning, you've been in our prayers all week anyway. Perhaps some acoustic waves from your 2 channel setup would enhance the healing process?!?!?! Glad to hear all is well.
  11. Called Wayne Saturday evening, he was in good spirits and pushing to complete the remodelling mentioned in his posts. Surgery was scheduled for Monday. Anyone in Long Beach area with time for a quick stop at the hospital he mentions at the beginning of this thread?
  12. thanks for the inputs, next trip out to San Diego I'll try to stop by the store again and see if they would demo some of this gear.
  13. Hey Wayne - I had a San Diego trip this week but no way to hookup with you this time around. You're in my prayers, brother! When you're feeling up to it hopefully my travel schedule will allow us to get together and give thanks for a speedy recovery. 1 Peter 2:24
  14. Saw some of this equipment at an audio boutique in San Diego purely by accident during a business trip this week. Equipment I saw looked substantial and was quite large. Did not get a detailed listen, wondered if anyone has heard of this company or has experience with their products. Is their Russian supertube all they say it is? <> http://www.balanced.com/ <>
  15. Is this fact or fiction? http://cgi.ebay.com/Klipsch-RF-35-Speaker-Brand-New-Black-1-Pair_W0QQitemZ140142249700QQihZ004QQcategoryZ14993QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
  16. I'll check my Top Gun DVD for extra features, thanks for the heads up.
  17. Enemy at the Gates, plus all the extra stuff till around 1 AM, good movie even with the love story aspect. Not much surround action except for the special effects audio, kept checking to make sure everything was setup for 5.1. Special effects were really great, though, payback to my neighbors for all the late night fireworks all week. And yes, now the choices are lining up for Saturday night........... Master and Commander, great demo movie but I've never watched beyond the first 15 minutes when they pull into the fog...... Hulk may be on the list again, if it is short maybe it will be movie #1 tonight. Have Top Gun, but it was a gift before I "trained" everyone to only buy widescreen......great sound though, I think it is DTS Don't have Open Range but have heard it is great. On my list for bargain priced DVDs. Mr. and Mrs. Smith with Angie and Brad (back when they were "not" a couple, right...), some great effects and the gunfire at the end is wicked good from what I remember..... Pearl Harbor maybe........ Stargate in DTS, but already seen it several times. FOTR, TTT, ROTK, but ditto, many times and always sample the first 20 minutes of FOTR and never get out of that movie...... Or, I could go buy Pink Floyd Pulse, but I'm kinda ruined since hearing some of it on Cal Blacksmith's HT system with Fortes and Quartets, just don't think my RF-35s and such would compare, but would be a good test..... Star Wars, pick any one...... The second PIrates movie, gift and not opened yet..... Plenty of time to decide..........
  18. wife might go for the second Spidey movie.......I'm going for the WWII movie, she'll never want to watch that.
  19. OK, it's Friday night and my wife is out of town for the weekend. So many movies, so little time...... I've accumulated several action flick DVDs on sale and just never watched them. Anybody seen any of these and care to give a thumbs up or down? Running 5 channel surround with a sub. Enemy at the Gates The Hulk Spiderman 2 Planning to crank something up in 30-40 minutes. Leaning towards Enemy at the Gates but it is fairly long.
  20. All packed and ready to roll. Just printed out the mapquest stuff from my address to the hotel, just under 300 miles so figuring arrival mid-late afternoon, depends how many back stretch exercise stops I make........ Staying at Residence Inn looking forward to meeting everyone.
  21. got the list from loud and clear, much thanks!
  22. Back in April I had an opportunity to visit Cal Blacksmith somewhat south of LA while I was on a business trip to San Diego. One of the CDs he demo'd for me on his two channel Cornnwall with tubes rig was Mark Knopfler "Sailing to Philadelphia". It's become one of my favorite CDs. Friday I'm driving to Indy for the Pigrimmage and hit the local library for some CDs to clean up and take along. Found one of his named "Ragpickers Dream". I'ver purposely not previewed it on my home system and hoping for another pleasant surprise for the road trip. Not quite where you were headed but I did want to chime in for the Mark Knopfler part.
  23. Shooting for mid-afternoon Friday, but could be later. Are there any plans for meeting for dinner before the mixer at Holiday Inn?
  24. Checked my email and I don't see anything yet. Owens2004@charter.net Christy, Kimball, please send me the contact list. .....and drive safely! thanks -
