  1. I just scored a mint set of KG 4s for $125. (Going to pick up now)..... Besides being 2 way vs. 3 way; is there any chance these will give my Heresies a run for their money? I believe I may use the Heresies for 2 channel on a seperate system..... Also, being that these KG4s have the radiators in the back; what is best placement? I will try to post pics later.....
  2. Welome to foums. If you do get Lascalas, you might be surprised just how good they sound with clean (not neccesarily super powerful) amplification. (More power does not equal better sound.......) They are quite accurate and beautiful sounding..... Hope the garage is heated . (PS. My dad was a JBL and tube guy.... that is what got me started....) Good Luck......
  3. Yep. I got mine for $140.... It was selling from $750- ? when it came out......($2007 date of manuf)..... This (my) receiver is very good..... I am not sure about yours, but assuming you have done research.... My opinion is that it is the best bang for the buck for getting a HQ receiver for minimum coin...... (Sounds like you love it!!!!) Good Luck....
  4. My opinion is yes. See my system below....... When using 2 channel; it's the Heresies only....... (and they rock). Your CWs would be superior IMHO..... If you wanted LaScalas; they would be great mains also, with CWs as surrounds...... (as a previous poster mentiond).... My HT : it is the KV3 and heresies blended..... I have an EQ in my receiver for each speaker; and I feel I have acheived a nice seemless blend of sound by using this. The surrounds blend nicely as well..... To each his own..... My ears are happy; (the GFs also).... and ultimately; thats what matters...... Good Luck
  5. I have cranked my sets (2 of them) very high...... Just avoid distortion. I also leave my power on all the time; the heatsink stays slightly warm...... My opinion is hot/cold cycles accelerate electronic component wear..... Your miles may vary...... If you wish to play them loudly; you can; just do not keep them cranked with distortion present...... Good luck....
  6. I vote for Heresies..... Many like the RF83 or 63s; Also; there are KLF20s and 30s that should also take up much less space than LaScalas.... My Heresies sound nice at lower volumes for music; and for HT; my system does as well.....
  7. First off; thanks for all of the responses........ I (once again) opened a can of worms; as I did not know what I was getting into! JamesV; I greatly appreciate your PM as well!!!! Looks like my original budget is not too feasible; unless someone generously decided to help the situation..... Thanks again to all; will update once I get a turntable......
  8. Welcome to the forum. Bill has given you good advice. You also need to pay close attention to your source material (and format) as that will have a great deal to do with what you ultimately hear. I will second that... Anything less than 320 kbs (MP3s) will not give the best sound. This makes a HUGE difference in how my system sounds!!!!!!! I have been updating all of my MP3s to at least 320 kbs or FLAC. You should take $200 away from the budget (amp/receiver) and buy a HUGE external drive..... I am over 120GB on music and growing every day..... Good Luck.
  9. I just have to ask...... Do you have a big room for your HT? Why not consider heritige speakers? ( Cornwalls, or Heresies, perhaps even La Scalas).... It is a different sound that will satisfy your hearts desires when it comes to music...... And excellent for HT in my opinion..... Search around on the forum....... And you could find mint gear whether Reference or Heritage used; For much less coin..... (Half price of new or sometimes even more).... (That being said; the new HIIIs will ROCK your world).... Good luck!
  10. Spend the extra $60-$120 (or a bit more if upgrading) to fix these..... They can overcome and persevere...... My Heresies had suffered veneer damage from previous owner. Short of reveneering, I was able to restore the finish very nicely. (Wood epoxy and stain). Battle wounds; now scars; that add to the character...... The extra work of repairing these and getting them to work (or look more like they should ), and YOU did them justice..... Is nice. I appreciate mine a bit more than I would if they weren't abused....... My .02 Good luck to you.
  11. So..... I am looking to get back into some vinyl..... What is the best bang for buck, new or vintage turntable under $200? All opinions and any input appreciated.... Thanks!
  12. I did my caps on my H1's about 2 months ago. A definite improvement in clarity..... I recently upgraded my receiver, I feel that has made a noticable difference as well..... What I want now are Chorus; Cornwalls or La Scalas....... (Wish me luck..... No WAF with any of these options.....)
  13. Yeah.... sounds like you are on the right track..... Just got my Onkyo a few weeks ago (used and very cheap).... I love it, and so do my Heresies..... [H] Good Luck! Let us know how it goes......
  14. What quality mp3s are you using? I have seen a big difference between 128kbs and 320kbs. Generally, it has to be 256kbs minimum, or sound quality suffers. 9I have spent the last month reconverting cds to 320)..... Not sure about the PS3, but I imagine if it is an optical cable it should be pretty decent......
  15. Welcome! Yes, $500 is at the top of the price range (Exotic rare veneer and upgraded with new caps/ woofers, etc can go higher)....... If they are in really nice shape and function perfectly..... that's a fair price. I got mine for $250. My cabinets had some damage and I was missing badges. Do the rag in the midrange horn thing.... definitely. And yes, 45wpc is enough. Good Luck....
  16. This might be a bit of work, but have you tried switching the speakers? ( switch the left and right speaker wires where they connect to the receiver). If the problem follows to the other speaker; very likely the receiver has the issue. If the problem stays on the same side, it is likely a loose connection/ failing component in the speaker. I am betting loose wiring..... But this is a good way to find out..... Good Luck....
  17. I am assuming these are all one system. ( Heresies and RF3's, and a sub.... 4.1? Or are there one or more additional speakers?) It could be your receiver is set to 2 channel stereo mode It is unlikely you blew both RF3s at once. (Blown where they are completely dead). Did you check the wiring? Are all RCA cables seated properly? Maybe your amp has an internal fuse for those channels? I do not know enough about your setup to be more specific...... Good Luck.....
  18. My advice is to change the orientation of your sub. Not sure where the port is currently located, but I try to position mine so that the port is facing towards a wall.... sometimes on an angle. (Have 2 sets; plus my main system's sub). Likely the location change is the culprit.... My opinion..... [] Good luck
  19. Yes.... welcome. I have been trying to talk the GF into letting me get a set of CWs....... (Me envious)...... Enjoy..... Let us know how you like them.....
  20. I came across this thread, and have to chime in. I just purchased my Onkyo TX SR702 via Craigslist for $140. This thing went for $700 and up new. It is 7.1; 100WX7. I will say it weighs over 40 pounds; and it blows my old Kenwood 5.1 away; whether stereo or surround; DTS; Dolby or any of the other surround effects/ settings. I doubt I could have done much better for so little coin...... My point? Perhaps slightly used may be the way to go....... Good Luck!
  21. Are you using a surge protector/ filter for your amp/ receiver/ tv/ dvd/cd/blue ray player? You should consider it, if you are blowing tweeters from turning lights off and on...... Good luck.
  22. I will say that my (used) TX SR702 (100w X7) kicks some butt!!!!! ($140 was a steal in my opinion) I am right now listening to 2 channel stereo on my 30 yr old Heresies and MY GOD!!!!! I am sure there are other dedicated 2 channel set ups, tube amps, etc. that would sound even better, but this is the best multifunctional setup I have heard...... My friends like me, but they HATE me. [H] My 5.1 Kenwood (VR407, 100W X5) did stereo well also, but this Onkyo blows it away. The Kwood lacked a bit doing the HT stuff, played with calibrating for HOURS.... never could get it seemless..... The Onkyo for HT, once calibrated..... seamless surround. Night and day difference...... Yes.... Retire the Yamaha, and if you can find slightly used, best bang for buck in my opinion....... Good luck and let us know what you do.....
  23. Your challenge is difficult. I will use a metaphor....... If you drive a 1969 Camaro SS..... It is not as refined as many new sports cars, but is magical nonetheless. It is more rare as not everyone has a '69 Camaro SS. There is something about a classic car that trumps any new "modern classic". (I would love a new Challanger or Camaro though! ) The new car probably runs smoother, posssibly faster and rides better........ The old car just has IT. Nostalgia.... and the fact it is rare. FYI... I am a Ford guy...... Another point.... Almost everyone has a boombox. How many have really REALLY good speakers and amp/ receiver? How many people even know what good sound is? ( I refer to Bose owners). It is a small percentage of people who really appreciate good, accurate sound. Tube amps augment this, and to many, get them closer to that goal...... With Tubes vs Solid State..... Tubes have a warm, unique sound, much like the '69 Camaro is unique. It is hard to describe. Different and to many, more REAL. Solid State is a lot like the newer car, and digital audio sounds great on both.... Just different. Tube guys will tell you it is just warmer and better. Something magical indeed.....They are right. That being said, a good quality solid state amp can kick butt also.... along with hdmi ports and optical cable in, etc...... I remember my Dad's Sansui receiver and JBL 15" woofered 3ways..... My house pumped as a kid...... No sub needed. And it sounded SO GOOD!!!!! I love my current system as well. I think he would be impressed, but I doubt mine is as good as his was....... Hope this helps....... Please; no flaming...... I would love to own a tube amp someday soon.....
  24. I have 2 sets of promedia 2.1s. I have never had a problem with these. I leave the main power switch on all the time. The amp is warm always, but only hotter when driving hard (naturally). I recently acquired an Onkyo TX SR702 Receiver. (100W X7).... When not in use, but "on" it too stays slightly warm to the touch.... It can get pretty hot when driving hard. (I have a fan blowing on all components in my system. ) My question is: Is it better to leave my receiver on all the time, or better to shut it off when not in use? (standby mode). Will repeated cooling/ heating cycles fatigue the components faster than never allowing it to get completely cold?
