  1. Thanks Don for the very cool list of lookup sites. It's obvious you do your homework before you buy a piece of gear. Searching, I would presume, for the best bang for the buck, which is more than likely why you bought Klipsch and are now hanging around here. Thanks again.
  2. So when's the Parteeeeeeeeeeeeee! I'll bring the Twins and we'll try out your hot sauce collection. Looks like a setting for a very cool movie, I'm not sure if Garth would be happy there, but I'm sure a certain Briitish spy with bad teeth would find it "Groovy Baby". Congrats on a job very well done.
  3. No problemo Frank. Better nothin than something nobody would like. After all although our music tastes may vary, we all like well recorded music.
  4. Thanks guys. The seller said he'd deal a little but I doubt I'd get hime down that much. I'm also not sure if they'd be that dramatic an improvement over my KG 5.2's so unless I hear otherwise re the comparison, I think I'll pass and wait for a better deal.
  5. Welcome. Judging by the response so far nobody has these available for you in your area. HOwever, there are other sources, like want ads, www.craiglist.org, ebay and www.audiogon.com. Good luck and good hunting.
  6. There's a pair for sale for $500 in my area (ie local pickup no shipping). Is this too steep? and would it be much of an improvement over my KG 5.2's?
  7. A real shame. He was a "Super Man" when it came to advancing medical research on spinal injuries. Years from now when progress is made in this area his name will still be mentioned for the work he did, not as an actor, but as a advocate.
  8. Good stuff last week. Edwin checked in so his Klipsch T-Shirt will shortly be on its way to Australia. So what do you have to share this week? Format is simple. Name of artists/group, style of music as best you can (jazz, blues etc.), whether its's a cd or lp and any comments you wish to share. As usual I'll start it off with: My very bestest recent discovery: Marianne Faithfull "Blazing Away", cd rock/blues, Live, Island Records I can't praise this cd enough. Maryanne Faithful was a 60's pop queen and girlfriend of Mick Jager. Over ther years she smoked to many butts and picked up a nasty heroin habit, which she later kicked. Recorded in 1990 at St. Anne's Cathedral (London?) her voice had reached it's peak of throaty power. Her backup band is absolutely stellar, she sings several songs she wrote with and without Mick including Sister Morphine and the recording quality is one of the best I've ever heard. The first two tracks don't really get you going but by the time she's through "Guilty" you are sucked in big time. 20 stars out of 10. You may never get a better recommendation from, so find this soonest.
  9. Go buy the latest issue of MaximumPC. They have a complete article on how to build your own, step-by-step and lay out three systems at different price ranges. You can get all the gear at NewEgg.com (best prices around), and of course buy some Promedia's for sound. I've built several and they are no brainers, just a smidge more difficult than hooking up a HT system. It will take you about 3 or 4 hours with a few more to load in and configure all the software you had installed on the old one. As far as a scanner read the reviews under the individual scanners in NewEgg. Other good gear reviews sites are Tom's Hardware and AnandTech. Even if you go new download Lavasoft's Ad-Aware and Spybot Search and Destroy (both free) an antivirus program, and enable the XP firewall and download the latest Windows security updates. It's fun and you'll learn some things that will come in handy the next and inevitable time your computer acts up.
  10. A lot darker then the others, but Marianne Faithful singing this on her CD called "Breaking Away (1990 live concert) truly makes it a ballad: M. Jagger/K. Richards/M. Faithfull) Here I lie in my hospital bed Tell me, Sister Morphine, when are you coming round again? Oh, I don't think I can wait that long Oh, you see that I'm not that strong The scream of the ambulance is sounding in my ears Tell me, Sister Morphine, how long have I been lying here? What am I doing in this place? Why does the doctor have no face? Oh, I can't crawl across the floor Ah, can't you see, Sister Morphine, I'm trying to score Well it just goes to show Things are not what they seem Please, Sister Morphine, turn my nightmares into dreams Oh, can't you see I'm fading fast? And that this shot will be my last Sweet Cousin Cocaine, lay your cool cool hand on my head Ah, come on, Sister Morphine, you better make up my bed 'Cause you know and I know in the morning I'll be dead Yeah, and you can sit around, yeah and you can watch all the Clean white sheets stained red.
  11. Good one Max. It's strange about Sting-I love his music, but his lyrics are either great (as in this case) or terrible. I still admit to being a fan, though. OK slackers, Max checked in from 1/2 a world away but the homeboys and the lurkers are very quiet tonight. Just reading the word "ballad" probably immediately gets you humming some sort of a song. Traffic this one on for size: John Barleycorn Must Die There were three men come from the West Their fortunes for to try, And these three made a solemn vow: "John Barleycorn must die." They plowed, they sowed, they harrowed him in, Threw clods upon his head, 'Til these three men were satisfied John Barleycorn was dead. They let him lie for a very long time, 'Til the rains from heaven did fall, When little Sir John raised up his head And so amazed them all. They let him stand 'til Mid-Summer's Day When he looked both pale and wan; Then little Sir John grew a long, long beard And so became a man. They hired men with their scythes so sharp To cut him off at the knee; They rolled him and tied him around the waist, And served him barbarously. They hired men with their sharp pitchforks To pierce him to the heart, But the loader did serve him worse than that, For he bound him to the cart. They wheeled him 'round and around the field 'Til they came unto a barn, And there they took a solemn oath On poor John Barleycorn. They hired men with their crab-tree sticks To split him skin from bone, But the miller did serve him worse than that, For he ground him between two stones. There's little Sir John in the nut-brown bowl, And there's brandy in the glass, And little Sir John in the nut-brown bowl Proved the strongest man at last. The huntsman cannot hunt the fox Nor loudly blow his horn And the tinker cannot mend his pots Without John Barleycorn. Collected by Robert Burns There was three kings into the east, Three kings both great and high, And they hae sworn a solemn oath John Barleycorn should die. They took a plough and plough'd him down, Put clods upon his head, And they hae sworn a solemn oath John Barleycorn was dead. But the cheerful Spring came kindly on' And show'rs began to fall; John Barleycorn got up again, And sore surpris'd them all. The sultry suns of Summer came, And he grew thick and strong: His head weel arm'd wi pointed spears, That no one should him wrong. The sober Autumn enter'd mild, When he grew wan and pale; His bendin joints and drooping head Show'd he began to fail. His colour sicken'd more and more, He faded into age; And then his enemies began To show their deadly rage. They've taen a weapon, long and sharp, And cut him by the knee; They ty'd him fast upon a cart, Like a rogue for forgerie. They laid him down upon his back, And cudgell'd him full sore. They hung him up before the storm, And turn'd him o'er and o'er. They filled up a darksome pit With water to the brim, They heav'd in John Barleycorn- There, let him sink or swim! They laid him upon the floor, To work him farther woe; And still, as signs of life appear'd, They toss'd him to and fro. They wasted o'er a scorching flame The marrow of his bones; But a miller us'd him worst of all, For he crush'd him between two atones. And they hae taen his very hero blood And drank it round and round; And still the more and more they drank, Their joy did more abound. John Barleycorn was a hero bold, Of noble enterprise; For if you do but taste his blood, 'Twill make your courage rise. 'Twill make a man forget his woe; 'Twill heighten all his joy: 'Twill make the widow's heart to sing, Tho the tear were in her eye. Then let us toast John Barleycorn, Each man a glass in hand; And may his great posterity Ne'er fail in old Scotland!
  12. Klipschfoot, sounds like good advice, except for the yard sales (scored 20 cd's for $2 a pop on the way home today, by the way). I try sending the Twins out to a yard sale I might as well become a monk because I will be very much in trouble with the Twins again. You want to run with me you better bring a wallet. We're talking limos sales, fur sales, diamond sales-you get my drift?
  13. I'll try a different approach on this. Let's talk KG series. Great speakers. If the amps ok, use it. If you need bookshelves get her a pair of KG 1.5's off ebay. These are sweet. A friend of mine whose a musician loves mine even more than my mains. If you can do floorstanding try KG 3.5's. They are not that large but boy do produce clarity, dynamics and a decent soundstage with great bass. You can usually pick them up for a bout $200. Try Criagslist.org. and do a search for Klipsch under sales and you will probably find them in your area, so you won't have to deal with shipping. Dollar for dollar the Kg series is the best value in the Klipsch line. Period. (allright, reluctantly, IMO on the last sentence)
  14. For $100 yeah that's what I'm thinking but I'm wondeirng if they would be an improvement over the Kg's I own or somehow less, or a poor man's Heritage.
  15. We had a lot of fun with the favorite song lyrics thing last week so let's try it again. Ballads you say? Yes. Defined by Websters as: a simple song; a narrative composition in rhythmic verse uitable for singing;an art song accompanying a tradiotional ballad, a popular song; a slow romatic or entimental song Leave us plenty of room, so the formats not too constricting. Could be an oldie could be brand new, what have you got to share? By the way if any of these are on SACD, or DVD-A please let me know, I've a friend who likes ballads and just bought a new universal player. Also, for those of you with concerns there is not trouble with posting lyrics in this manneer. This type of activity is pefectly legal under the fair usage portion of the copyright law. I'll start it out with a traditional format ballad from the early 60's: Big Bad John Jimmy Dean (Words and Music by Jimmy Dean) (Big John, Big John) Ev'ry mornin' at the mine you could see him arrive He stood six foot six and weighed two forty five Kinda broad at the shoulder and narrow at the hip And everybody knew ya didn't give no lip to Big John. (Big John, Big John) Big Bad John (Big John) Nobody seemed to know where John called home He just drifted into town and stayed all alone He didn't say much, kinda quiet and shy And if you spoke at all, you just said "Hi" to Big John. Somebody said he came from New Orleans Where he got in a fight over a Cajun Queen And a crashin' blow from a huge right hand Sent a Loosiana fellow to the Promised Land-Big John (Big John, Big John) Big Bad John (Big John) Then came the day at the bottom of the mine When a timber cracked and men started cryin' Miners were prayin' and hearts beat fast And everybody thought that they'd breathed their last-'cept John Through the dust and the smoke of this man-made hell Walked a giant of a man that the miners knew well Grabbed a saggin' timber, gave out with a groan And like a giant oak tree he just stood there alone-Big John (Big John, Big John) Big Bad John (Big John) And with all of his strength he gave a mighty shove Then a miner yelled out "There's a light up above!" And twenty men scrambled from a would-be grave Now there's only one left down there to save-Big John With jacks and timbers they started back down Then came that rumble way down in the ground And then smoke and gas belched out of that mine Everybody knew it was the end of the line for Big John (Big John, Big John) Big Bad John (Big John) Now they never reopened that worthless pit They just placed a marble stand in front of it These few words are written on that stand At the bottom of this mine lies a hell of man, Big John (Big John, Big John) Big Bad John (Big John) FADE (Big John, Big John) Big Bad John (Big John)
  16. In my area there are a pair of Tangent 400's, look good in the pics, going for $100. I'm currently running KG 3.5' and 5.2's. Would they bring anything to the table or be a lesser addition to the mix. Not much in the Search function on these so I'm casting about for info.
  17. Thanks for sharing Turner with us Gary. I've always thought since the 60's our songwriters have become our bards and poets. Can't stay away from the lyrics of Tom Waits. Here's one I've been really loving lately. Everyman. Poignant. Pathos. It's got it all. Try a listen to Jennifer Well's rendering on her cd, "The Well" Invitation To The Blues lyrics Well she's up against the register with an apron and a spatula, Yesterday's deliveries, tickets for the bachelors She's a moving violation from her conk down to her shoes, Well, it's just an invitation to the blues And you feel just like Cagney, she looks like Rita Hayworth At the counter of the Schwab's drugstore You wonder if she might be single, she's a loner and likes to mingle Got to be patient, try and pick up a clue She said How you gonna like 'em, over medium or scrambled?, You say Anyway's the only way, be careful not to gamble On a guy with a suitcase and a ticket getting out of here It's a tired bus station and an old pair of shoes This ain't nothing but an invitation to the blues But you can't take your eyes off her, get another cup of java, It's just the way she pours it for you, joking with the customers Mercy mercy, Mr. Percy, there ain't nothing back in Jersey But a broken-down jalopy of a man I left behind And the dream that I was chasing, and a battle with booze And an open invitation to the blues But she used to have a sugar daddy and a candy-apple Caddy, And a bank account and everything, accustomed to the finer things He probably left her for a socialite, and he didn't 'cept at night, And then he's drunk and never even told her that her cared So they took the registration, and the car-keys and her shoes And left her with an invitation to the blues Cause there's a Continental Trailways leaving local bus tonight, good evening You can have my seat, I'm sticking round here for a while Get me a room at the Squire, the filling station's hiring, And I can eat here every night, what the hell have I got to lose? Got a crazy sensation, go or stay? now I gotta choose, And I'll accept your invitation to the blues
  18. Excellent Audible. Wonderful post. I try to do music stuff here rather than the internet because I'm on dialup and it's much more hit and miss. Here you know it's recorded well, and even though it may not always be what I'm looking for, you know there's discernment as well as passion behind the recommendations. Steven, looks like I'm going to have to wander down the hgihway one of these days and try some of that chicken.
  19. Very good review Dodger. Read one in the Washington Post today about this cd that wasn't as thoughful, even though the reviewer was also a Fogrerty fan. On a personal note don't let the current stuff up in 2 Chanel draw you in. Either try to distract them like I did or stay away. These are no win situations. Back to the review. Aside from Fogerty I loved Contry Joe and the Fish and thier sentiments during the era, as well as Eric Burdon's "Sky Pilot", Seagers "The Big Muddy" and, of course, "Eve of Destruction". In terms of overall popularity I can't think of a band that had as lare a following amongst the entire social/economic spectrum during that time than Credence.
  20. "Tolerant of immoral behaviors; Lack of dignity." Geez, I'm hanging out at the local cat-house and I hear that Neo's talking about me. So I take the lamp shade off my head, slip into my clown shoes and Groucho Marx glasses and come on over here only to find out their talking about: Craig!

But just as good as the music is the sound quality. Absolutely sensational! The bass and kickdrum on this album has to be among the best I have ever heard in a compact disc. 23. We had great participation, great suggestions and a great winner in our very own Edwinr. So what do you have to share this week? Format is simple. Name of artists/group, style of music as best you can (jazz, blues etc.), whether its's a cd or lp and any comments you wish to share. As usual I'll start it off with: Eric Bibb, "A Needed Time-Good Stuff", cd blues I actually bought this one off a recommendation posted here (sorry can't remember right now who offered it up) and I must say I am loving this. Very much in the style of Taj Mahal and Keb Mo. Beautiful, almost restrained blues with a nice delta feel. You can't go wrrng with this one and very well recorded using a vacuum tube stereo microphone , custom-built vacuum tube design mixer and analogue recorder with Telefunken Magnetopon M-28C. Whoever first posted this, many thanks.

  25. As everybody whose ever followed my technical advice on this forum knows, I have no idea what I'm talking about, so I'm sure others will help out with the technical differences between formats and disc types and, of course, player mods. That leaves me with only one reply, and that's cost. DVD-A's and SACD's basically cost the same as as plain old cd's. Don't believe me, walk into Tower Records etc. and you'll see. Best Buy, Target etc. will sell them for $3 to $4 bucks less but they have very limited selections.
