  1. Hey Gary don't stop now. You know you wan some Khorns! Maybe you have a birthday or something coming up or you could get them for you wife for your wedding anniversary.
  2. Rats I have no corners and I just bought some 5'2's less then two months ago. I may call and make an outrageous offer but basically I ran this so forum members in this area would have a heads up. Given the size of those things I understand it best to acquire them locally.
  3. This mornings classified section of the Washington Post carries the following ad: Speakers-Corner Klip Schorns. Perfect Condition. Best Offer. call 301--855-7131. (spelling is exactly as in ad)
  4. The Fugs. 1st record had CocaCola ****** and Up Against the Wall Motherf****r. After that their sense of anarchy went downhill. It's a Beautiful Day. Never even new they put out two more that's how bad it was. Splat! Wings.
  5. Perhaps a low volume vacum cleaner to suck dust out, and then a very slightly moistened tooth brush to loosen the dirt followed by a cloth to blot up any residual moisture and dirt? I'd probably try to stay away from any cleaning agents.
  6. Am I the only one tired of looking at black boxes and wooden cases. Have been thinking awhile about making an acrylic case cover for my tube gear. As a first step I decided to do a practice run by building a cover for a Yammie CDX 1110u player I recently acquired. With two power supplies, a metal changer and three different ciruit boards it looks pretty cool inside. An additional benefit, it was very clean so no prep work inside. Bought a sheet of 1/4 inch acrylic at Home Depot($16 for a sheet large enough to do one case), a glue gun an a 40 tooth saw blade. A few cuts and some glue and it was done. The result: kinda poor. I need to use glue specified for acrlyic and I need to measure better. Did learn a few tricks though. One, cut slowly it prevents chipping. Two, use masking tape over your cut line. It prevents chipping and it's easier to see the cut line. Three, Leave as much of the film in place to prevent scratches. Overall result. Good enough to go forward with cases for my Scott 299 and my Fisher 500c. These cases will require that I elevate the height of the amp a couple of inches to handle the heat from the tube and to drill holes (I have an estate sale drill press) or use a plunge router to cut venting groves. A couple more holes on each to attach handles and I'll have a case showing of the innards, some protection against a wayward liquid spill and good protection from a dropped object or nosy kid. Picture attached.
  7. Haven't tried the grippers but have used spikes on carpet over plywood floors and I think it actually made by 3.5's a little hasher. Tried the spikes with same in basement over a rug and concrete and it did drop down the bass a bit, which is nice, but it wasn't quite a revelation. Haven't tried it yet with my 5.2's.
  8. OK. I think a few of you may have missed my point. I was just struck by how informative and patient TB was in taking the time to reduce a highly technical subject into understandable prose that benefits not only the newcomer asking the question but those of us in the Forum who do not have the technical chops or background others here do. To me, his resposne,in a nutshell, illustrates the best attributes of this Forum and the help offered by Tom and so many others. Not trying to get all misty eyed here. Oh, and Fini, I had you pegged as a Froot Loops fan and TB as more of a Good and Plenty guy.
  9. Given some of the uproar around here recently I commend you to read TBrennan's second reply to the "How Would Biamping Change Sound of Klipsch" thread. Reasoned, knowlegeable, informative, courteous and helpful. A stellar example of what's best about this Forum. Hat's off to the T-Man!

    Denon 2803

Good choice. The manual will drive you crazy and the remote was invented by Bill Gates, but the sound is very clear with a nice soundstage, and all the hookups you'll ever need. Give it some breathing room because it does put out a lot of heat. Any insoluable problems PM me and I'll try to help out.
  11. For tubes try a little soul (if the're rockers they almost always like a little soul). The following was absolutely made for tubes: Temptations "For Lovers Only" Recorded only four years ago the first two tracks will absolutely, positively showcase your tubes to their best advantage. The first time I played this on my Scott 299 I almost wet my paints and no I'm not trying to revive the underwear thread. Other tube friendly tunes: Dire Straigts Down to the Waterline (one of the best quitar licks ever) from "Dire Straits"; Concrete Blonde, Roxy from "Group Therapy (ps thier new cd Mohave drops at the end of June); Colin Hay (former frontman for Men at Work) Into the Cornfield or Overkill from "Topanga" and finally try My Back Pages a Dylan song performed in Japanese of all things by the Mogokore Brothers from the Masked and Anonymous soundtrack which was a Dylan film that came out last year.
  12. Great ideas often come from the most unlikely of sources. A large part of this country is now inundated with the 17 year cicada. Billions of these critters sounding off at once sets up an amazing din with a sound comparable to an old '50's sci-fi flick. When listening normally it basically sounds like one note rising and falling slightly up and down the scale. But cup your hands behind your ears and wallah, the sound immediately at least doubles in volumne. The highs are more clear, the soundstate is wider and the dynamics are so intense it sound like a flying saucer is about to land on your head! Could these strange creatures has been the inspiration for our fabled horns?
  13. Unless you're looking to record lp's or something, an add-in to your computer is the best and cheapest way to go for copying cd's, mpegs whatever. Lite-On makes a 52x cd burner (no more thatn $40) that is available at newegg and they may still carry them at BestBuy. MaximumPC, a computer hardware magazine, is very enthusiastic about its performance for the price. The're top rated selection is a Plextor burner at about twice the price of a Lite-On. All newer burners come with burn protection to basically eliminate making coasters. Don't buy old used in this area. Also many recommend copying music cd's at 32x.
  14. Welcome. You'll like it here. What you're looking to do is timbre match your speakers all the way around except for the sub. At the main Klipsch site you'll find a list of types of speakers. Under Classic, Classics go to KG 3.2 and see your specs. Klipsch recommends either a 2.2 or 2.1 center. Availability on these used is mixed so I would consider a K.2, which are more common and go for $80 to $120 on Ebay. I would also recommend Kg 1.5's for rears. The 1.5's are 14 pound bookshelf speakers and sound nice in their own right. Because they are smaller, they might be easier to place in the rear of your room. The center of course would be easily placed on top of you tv and is shielded, an important consideration since I don't think the 3.2's are.
  15. There's an old saying here in the States: "if you drink, don't buy a bar". You'd probably buy everthing in sight, refuse to sell anything, and quickly go broke. By the way my lunchtime score today (cd's) Mitch Ryder and the Detriot Wheels "Devil with a Blue Dress On", Concrete Blonde "Still in Hollywood", Four Tops "Ain't No Woman Like the One I Got", Eric Burdon "Lost Within the Halls of Fame" and Bob Dylan "Love and Theft" $42 bucks and classics of a different sort.
  16. Thanks a lot for all the info guys. I'll take it in stages and slowly work my way up the ladder to getting them clean. By the way, any brand names for 100% silicone?
  17. What about older gear such as 70's/80's receivers/amps with the two prong cords. Safety, proper grounding? Got a bunch of this stuff and not sure if I should do it.
  18. Sorry I mean Clean Up old metal gear. None of this gear has acne.
  19. Let's face it the man's got the fever bad. Earlier today he was making moves to acquire movie theater speakers. Is it time to step in? I envision him late at night squatting on all fours before his latest setup whispering to himself "my pressscious, my presscious". I can also imagine the domestic situation. "Oh honey, there's no tread left on the tires, can't we buy some new ones"? "Certainly, dear, as soon as I land these new monoblocs, oh, and of course, the zebra stripe Khorns that just went on sale in Uganda". Should we step in or cheer him on? Better yet, is there even a 12 step program for gear heads? Is the first step: Always pay the electric bill before buying LaScalas. Your advice is urgently needed.
  20. I've got a little cubbyhole in my basement that I'm in the proces of filling up with old 70's/80's amplifiers and receivers. (industrial art on the cheap with the added benefit that I'll be able to swap out the gear for different sounds every few weeks) Most of the gear has solid metal fronts and I was wondering what's best to use to clean/polish that won't remove lettering etc. Any suggestions?
  21. FYI, this month's MaximumPC (June) magazine has an extensive how to article on how to build a Media Server PC that will let you stream music and video into any room in your house.
  22. Welcome. A great place to be. So...did your build kick butt on your old mans's or is he still the master. So you just got here, huh. Psst...lean in closer, anybody watching, no good, 'cause here's the deal, I'll give you $75 (heh, heh, heh) yes, that 's $75 for the pair and throw in three vestal virgins. That's right three. Do you know how hard it is to come up even one ordinary virgin these days.
  23. I really, rally do know where you are coming from. Until the last three years I was a renter. Had not one, but two houses go to developers (may they all rot in hell). The last one I had for 14 years. It was on 1 acre of wodded land five mintues from the biggest suburban center just outside of Washington,DC. I had several opportunites to buy but I just could not leave the place. It was like camping in the woods with all the urban conveniences. Fortunately you've got more then just the memories. Your friends in the neighborhood are still there, the scenary is still there, and you're still there. It's an old saw, but I susepect when all is done you will make your new house into a home.
  24. I have the Denon 2803 and am running it with KG 5.2's, KV2 center and Kg 1.5 rears. Very dynamic for HT and very detailed with excellent soundstage for 2 channel. These are no longer being made and I got mine in February for $425 so if you go this way bargain hard. One caveat the remote on this sucker sucks big time and the manual was probably originally written in Sanksrit, translated into Chinese and comes to us via Slovenia. Don't even think of buying this without the remote because you absolutely need it to do inital setup through your tv. The manual you will eventually puzzle through but a good everyday remote afer setup would probably be a very good idea.
  25. I live in Reston, GaryMD is from of all places Maryland, actualy near Baltimore, and he has several forum buddies in the area. If I was younger they'd call me a slacker, so you organize it and I will come and bring some gear.
