  1. I can (and do) listen to Beck: Sea Change over and over and over and over over and over and over and over over and over and over and over over and over and over and over It's been years since I've been able to do that with an album.
  2. Most movies and TV shows I get to keep company. Sports, however, and I'm all by my lonesome. NHRA, Nascar, MLB, Football (NFL and NCAA), F1, all bad for all but me.
  3. After eight weeks and three suppliers I finally got my hands on it last night. Whew! Although not my favorite style of music (I probably wouldn't listen to this if if weren't for the organ) the organ makes everything "right". Quite a unique sound overall -- I think the keyword in the jacket liner (and I wholehartedly agree) is "powerful." I've never had my couch shaking sideways before.
  4. If your knees and ankles can stand it, up your runtime and frequency (say 45min 5xweek). I've found that the single most effective way to lose the weight was to run. Not much can come close to the calorie expendeture (maybe Xcountry-skiing?. Seen any fat marathoners? Me neither.
  5. Self-induced ketosis is a great way to form kidney stones. Although I have never had one, I know many who have, and they look pretty painful... no thanks. Although I have not seen any statistical validation to back this up, I've noticed that many people who did the "low-carb" crap also lost extra weight by having their gallbladders removed within a year. Most people completely avoided carbs and ate bacon, steak, etc... I would venture a guess that gallbladders do not like an overabundance of high-fat foods. Eat right and excercise -- the prescription for America. Sounds so easy, so hard to do. Being that I was superactive for years (mountain biking, rock climbing)and ate whatever, whenever I am also struggling with "the hunger." Mind over matter, I suppose.
  6. Bruce, my heart goes out to you. Having worked in diagnostic radiology for the last ten years I know what you are facing. Having lost one of my best friends (who was also my boss) to metastatic melanoma two years ago, I know where you are coming from: being in the medical industry I felt that I had a 'leg up' over most people as to what to do and how to do things when it came to diagnosis and treatment of illness and God showed me how powerless I really was. On the flip side, I work with a physician whose wife is status post pancreatic cancer two years (pancreatic and melanoma ca are equally evil) and is doing well. Have faith, and I will pray for you and yours. God bless, Ray
  7. I shopped for subs for over a year before settling on the very one you are looking at. My reasons were: ultra clean output, VERY low extention (16hz), VERY high SPL capability (over115dbs and no sweat yet), and the most decent bang for your $. I needed something that was capbable of filling a somewhat large room too. After twiddling the settings for what seemed like forever, I finally ended up with the center and the 4 surrounds set to "small" and the mains on "Large+LFE". The crossover is on 60hz. Granted, this is for MY ROOM, but I think this gave me the most natural sound especially for music. The sub was too locatable on a higher crossover setting. I would twiddle with a lower crossover if I weren't so lazy. With as little time I have for my A/V pursuits I would rather watch movies or listen to music. My setup used to be "5.0" and for some of the nasty LFE effects in movies my reciever would clip. When I added a separate amp (which got me 7.0) I moved the mains and center channel and that problem went away -- I attribute this to "headroom." With the addition of the sub I don't think the receiver and amp are working a fraction of what they used to and I doubt your Denon would either. But another reciever is always something to shoot for those cases of upgradeitis.
  8. Although Jimi will forever be remebered as playing the Fender Strat, he did make a switch to Gibson before his passing!
  9. I can't believe I am going to admit to this... Ugh. "Biodome" Yeah, the one with Pauly Shore and one of the Baldwins. Bad acting, bad story, bad everything... but I cant shut it off for some reason.
  10. One trick I remember reading is to put the sub in you listening position then find the spot in the room where the bass is the loudest. Once you find that spot, then put the sub there. That is certainly the cheapest solution (and since you have time on your hands).

    Pi

Pi was one of the more original movies I've seen in a LONG time. Considering the budget Aranofsky had he still managed to get some fantastic acting, effects, and even a cool soundtrack. Aranofsky is supposed to be doing a film from one of my all time favorite novels "Flicker"... a conspiratorial, multi-layered, noir-mystery about the beginnings of the film industry and the medium in general. The book could be very disturbing at times, so I'm sure Aranofsky can do it justice.
  12. That's fine for a while but doesn't help much when you're trying to expand your musical horizons. ---------------- Exactly! I do find myself listening to Sirius at home as much as I watch Dishnetwork. I originally thought my hometheater would be 50%music/50%DVD; its closer to 90+%music.
  13. Moon: Sirius:Chill plays the likes of Theivery Corporation, Kruder and Dorfmeister, Moby, etc. Sometimes they will throw in some straight acoustic stuff too. This would be the audio equivalent of Xanax. For some harder electronica there is several selections but one of my fav's is "Oldschool Breakbeats" although it is hard pressed to be called ambient. The thing I enjoy the most about Sirius is they have actual programmers selecting songs. For years and years I tried to listen to 'cable radio', only to find that every time I turned it on I was listening to the same 4hr track of music. My tastes in music are as wide as Rosie O'Donnel's... Never mind. Anyways, the selections are pretty good on Sirius except for Classical music. I would call their Classical channel "mostly modern/20th century"...
  14. Thanks y'all for the links. I had tried most of them before, and to no avail. I didn't think to look "worldwide" on amazon. Rather than wheel and deal, I just went ahead and bought the disc... around 20 pounds sterling which will probably covert to $8000 with my luck.
  15. The jazz subgenre of "swing" is relatively structured. The Count Basie Orchestra is always a good start -- 1930s to 1940s was the highpoint of swing, but artists have been recording in that style since then. Older styles of Jazz are going to have structure but were talking music recorded on 78s and wax cylinders... probably a little too harsh on the ears.
  16. Susan? No... I hate Madonna's movies. Looking for: Frederick Fennell "Pomp and Pipes" on CD. It would appear as though the distributor is in some sort of legal dispute and is no longer shipping anything. I have exhausted and exceeded my internet searching capabilities; if there is a store/site that still carries it I am unable to find one. Thanks for any direction.
  17. Who won?! Verizon Wireless... Who raked in 87 kajillion dollars for phone fees!
  18. Which kind of gas we talking about here? I hope it's not cuz of all the nachos with bean dip... ---------------- Touche' -- twas a mix of CH3NO2 and Waffle House.
  19. Well folks, After years of going to local/small town drag races, I finally made it to a Top Fuel event: The Summit Nationals in Atlanta Dragway. I'll try and post some photos later. I tried to experience the race from all ends of the track, but no matter where I was, it felt like getting punched in the chest and my eyeballs were about to shake out of the socket. I imagine that the feeling is similar to the "Mythbusters" episode where they were trying to reproduce the 'brown note'. I had a full face respirator handy for when they fired up the motor in the pits... such a thing to behold. Despite the heat there were some fairly fast times Fri/Sat. Unfortunately I didn't stay for Sunday's race as it was raining -- I just got word that they finished up at about 10pm. I was asleep long before that but DVR'ed the race. SO NO SPOILERS. My wife says I still smell like gas.
  20. I glommed my father-in-law's 1955 RCA B&W television out of his basement, took all of the guts out of it, and set most of my components in it. The amp and reciever sit on top. The cabinet needed some cleaning, but once I did it turned out to be a damn fine piece of furniture.
  21. Tee Tee Oh Em Oh Three times three minus one: "Eeeew Girlll ewwww"
  22. Skonopa: Very cool rack... what/where is/from that?! Very cool how those units are 'hanging' above the TV. WS65711: I like your thinking Believe me, though, that my current center channel placement is only a TEMPORARY solution.
  23. I got mine locally from a pawn shop for $250, but $400 seems to be about the going rate for one in good condition on ebay/audiogon etc.
  24. Thanks everyone for the insight. The size of the TV in my living room is absolutely frightening. And I don't get skeered easy. It may have something to do with the fact that my previous TV was 27"... I also had the RC7 on top of this TV -- if I remember correctly, both my previous TV and the RC7 were the same width. The speaker was 'OH' so precariously perched on top as the speaker hung off of the back quite a bit. Now that the Mitsubishi is home, my speakers do not seem so enormous anymore. For now, I have the RC7 sitting on top of the Mitsu. Until I come up with an ideal solution (be it glass, a shelf, whatever)I think the cabinet should do fine in the short term. This thing is built like a tank. One step closer to bliss...
  25. Hopefully, before the day is out, I will have dragged a Mitsubishi 65711 into my house. I cannot remember if I read on this forum or some other -- that before putting a heavy center channel on top of the television it is wise to have something on top of the TV to distribute the load across the entire surface rather than having all of the weight pushing in the middle. I think that with the weight of an RC7 this sounds pretty good in theory, but I would like to hear from y'all.
