  1. That's why good cabinetmakers cut the miters at 45.5 0r 46 degrees and clamp the crap out of it when gluing. They also finish off the edges on a jointer for perfect fit. Their equipment is set up to perfection, and nothing else will suffice. It's impossible to do a great job with a circular saw as the slop in the blades, bearings, and mountings, and even with a clamped guide you will be at least +- .060" form one end to the other. And that doesn't allow for human hiccups during the cut. The circular saw blade will actually bend back and forth during the cut no matter how good the guide is. You have to go super duper slow to prevent the blade from creeping and if the cord gets caught it's all over. So you have to have the cord wrapped around your shoulder and a perfectly sharp blade that doesn't bias the cut in one direction. The work has to be clamped to something that does not move or jiggle. And make sure you have safety glasses and you can't stop in the middle of the cut to clean them. Good luck, you will need it real bad. JJK
  2. I failed to mention that my predictions are usually wrong. JJK
  3. They probably would produce a lot of heat when running flat out. JJK
  4. One huge problem with electric battery powered vehicles is as the batteries discharge the speed and torque slowly diminish. Electric towmotors work the same way. At half charge nothing happens or it is so slow it is put back on the charger. You constantly have to refill the batteries with distilled water and the battery life and performance diminishes over a 3 year period. After the three year period the battery usually has to be replaced because it is cracked and leaking. No car owner is going to put up with that kind of crap. Then there is the increased power consumption on the national electric grid which no one seems concerned about. With the hydrogen powered vehicles the articles I read said the production of hydrogen from natural gas would equal the polution saved from running the vehicles on hydrogen. Now that's a real dumb deal. JJK
  5. dragonfyr: I will make it easier for you to understand. BluRay will loose. HD-DVD will win. A standard DVD production line (there are many) can be converted to produce HD-DVD's in 15 minutes. BluRay has no production lines and the first one being built by Sony will cost over 1 billion dollars. Sony is saying they can reduce the production cost of a single disc to be almost as cheap as the HD-DVD disc. The bean counters have already wrapped it up to a done deal. And by the way the quality of the playback on the two types of discs is the same. The only difference is the capacity. JJK
  6. What people are not aware of is how many HD's there are even at the present time. There is original HD which has been zapped by all of the broadcasters to HDV which 99.9 % of the people can't tell the difference in quality. HDV is what everyone is looking at on there tv sets---The MPEG2 data stream is how the broadcasters transmit there HD all over the place and they use MPEG2 for minimum bandwidth. Now how about HD-2k (twice the resolution of HD, HD-4K (4 times the resolution of HD), HD-8K (8 times the resolution of HD). The data stream of HDV is 25 megs per second, HD-50 to 100 megs per sec., HD-8K about 360 megs per second. Keep in mind they are only arguing about HD right now. What will happen when HD-8K hits the market throught the complete chain? There are camcorders now (Viper) that shoot HD-8K). Then HD-16K, then HD-500K. Hd-100K already exists and is being used in medical instruments. If the recorders/players were manufactured by Bell Labs/Western Electric we would just purchase an add on module and everything would be honky-dory. The greed factor has to be surpassed and I don't think that will happen. Just read the news every day for confirmation of this. JJK
  7. The back of my Cornwall is a perfect fit and has no sealant. It also has no air leaks* and works just fine. I wonder what PWK says? *checked during heavy bass passages. JJK
  8. It would be nice to have a friend in a pattern shop. But they still wouldn't let you use the machinery, the friend would have to do it. on his own time and maybe you would have to tell him don't worry about the mistakes or he won't be friendly anymore. With the circular saw you will wind up with a whole bunch of useless lumber on the floor and probably shoot your wife. JJK
  9. Well I personally don't like MDF but maybe a carbide blade with wider tooth spacing would help clean things out. There are many kinds of MDF but I like the cabinet grade 3/4" plywood with oak, walnut, mahogany finish. Save the sawdust and mix with the glue for proper coloring for filling and gluing like the big guy's do in the pattern shops. Miter the edges at 46 degrees and clamp the crap out of it or finish the exposed edges with 3/4" x 1/32" trim or fancy trim. When gluing use the same blocking that Klipsch uses. Your handheld Milwaukee saw is not the way to go for straight cuts. Use a table saw, for long cuts, radial arm saw for short cuts, then finish the cuts with an edger or plainer for a perfect fit. If you want perfect looking cabinets you have the have the right tools. And keep in mind that even with the really good tools they must be in perfect alignment with no dings on the blades. That's why a professional cabinet maker will not even let you enter his work area. I he sees you leaning on his 20 ft radial arm saw bench that he spent many hours calibrating for perfect 90 degree cuts he will make some cuts on you. Anyway, good luck on your project. JJK
  10. Well, I give up. My HDTV tuner crapped out so I bought another one---LG-3510-A. It has at last count 18 different zoom variations. I have lost the battle and I have lost the war. I now go on record as saying that everything on an HD designated channel is HD even if it doesn't look like HD. Even if it starts out as a 1920 black & white 18fps film it is HD. About 75% of the HD channels in my area send the 4 x 3 flags when tansmitting 4 x 3 but about 25% do not so they stretch it out to 16 x 9, and this includes the commercials in the broadcast. Lets see now, I select the channel, then go through 18 different possible zoom configurtations, then the program is over and I go to the doctor for carpel tunnel syndrome. Can someone save me from this extraordinary PR blitz of High-Definition Definitions? JJK
  11. My question is how do you convert 4 x 3 to 16 x9 without loosing the top and bottom of the picture? If you use those stupid zooms you end up with short fat people, clear or not. It is mathematically impossible to change a 4 x 3 aspect to 16 x 9 without loosing the top and bottom unless you are in the 11th dimension. If you are viewing it on an HD channel with the correct 4 x 3 aspect it is in 480p which is not High Definition. Anything broadcast on a High Def channel in 4 x 3 aspect is automatically broadcast in 480p, not 1080i. There is no such thing as High Definition 4 x 3 period. JJK
  12. How can Hogans Heroes which was in 4 x 3 format be viewed properly in Hi Def? No way. High Def is 16 x 9 and no other. If your picture aspect is 4 x 3 and on a Hi Def channel you are looking at 480i or 480p which is not Hi Def. All 4 x 3 aspects on a HI-Def channel are automatically shown in 480p by the broadcasters. This is called SD. As soon as the broadcaster changes to Hi-Def the aspect changes to 16 x 9. If you have the zoom roaching out the picture from 4 x 3 to 16 x 9 correctly (top and bottom of picture missing) it's still not Hi-Def. Hi-Def is only transmitted in 16 x 9 aspect period. Exception would be 2.5 x 1 Cinemascope in "letterbox 16 x 9" with black bars on the top and bottom. You can zoom that also but you will miss half the picture. All 4 x 3 aspects are SD or RD period. SD (Standard Definition) and RD (Reduced Definition)are in 4 x 3 aspects ratios. Well now that I have confused myself its time to leave. JJK
  13. They have been broadcasting a logo with HD broadcasts continuously to prevent copying to resell and distribute. Why do they need the flags? Ask the big fat guy's with the Cuban cigars. JJK
  14. I installed the Dean upgraded crossover in my 1965 Cornwall and the difference was astounding. I think it sounds better now then when it was new in 1965. JJK
  15. I also saw it on PBS on my HDTV. In my opinion the video was digital 16 x 9 as way too many things were out of focus. If that's their idea of High Def they have a real problem. They are cheating just like the golf tournaments and other shows claiming to be high def when in fact they are digital 16 x 9. My Sony HDV camcorder totally blows away the Crossroads video. The only thing in common with Crossroads and high def is the picture aspect---16 x 9. When you see an audiance shot with the audiance "blurred" it is not High Def. The NCAA basketball High Def had people in the far away seats in total sharp focus and in this respect I am not talking about close ups of people with the background out of focus. So I really don't care what PBS says, Crossroads was not High Definition. They might have transmitted a 16 x 9 program in high definition which they do all the time. But the source was not high definition. It's what you start with, and in the case of high definition concerts you must have hi def cameras, not 16 x 9 digital cameras. You can broadcast anything in hi def but it will look like crap if it did not start out with a hi def camera. For instance: I use a VHS camcorder to take a video of my family and then it is broadcast on PBS in hi def, it is not hi def but VHS broadcast in a hi def system and it still looks like VHS crap. JJK
  16. Thanks Guys. I was just wondering what was going on. JJK
  17. Noticed my older CD discs have about 10 db less volume than the new discs. Are they using some new technique to juice up the new ones? JJK
  18. Design one like a klystron, 15" diameter with an air hole at each end with the tube about 5 or 6 feet long with resonsnt cavities for each range of frequencies with huge magnetic fields centering the airflow which is controlled by huge blowers with iron injected particles. JJK
  19. They do make a pretty nice 50" DLP HDTV. Although the resolution is not exactly as good as my Sony tube model. JJK
  20. Just don't let that cat do it's leg scratching thing on those cones. JJK
  21. I'm chuckling, the well permit is for geo-thermal heat transfer. The man that bought my land dug 7 wells 250ft deep for the geo-thermal heat transfer. He also dug a $30,000.00 ditch 800 feet long in solid rock for the city water and gas and electric and cable tv lines. By the way, he has cable and satellite feeding the tv's in the house. The heating and ventilation in the house was $250,000.00. Light fixtures $60,000.00. Shall I go on? JJK
  22. My community with 17k population collected $100,000.00 in permit fees last year on remodeling and building new homes. Let's see, well permit, plumbing, electrical, building, tree cutting, septic tank, deck, fence, gas, oil, yadda, yadda, yadda. In building your own home you might have 3k in fees. Sewer tap in 18k, gas line tap in 6k, city water charge 18k, but leaf and garbage picup is free. Lets see, thats 40k and you haven't even dug the basement yet. Me oh my. JJK
  23. DSE is an expert on 5.1 mixing. He can be reached on the Sony Vegas forum. JJK
  24. You raised a good question. Who is the middle class today? Yesterday it used to be something like 12 to 30 bucks per hour. At least in my mind. Maybe it was more but 30 bucks an hour was pure gold for me. You raised another good point. Who is buying all of these $300,000.00 houses? I don't have a clue. The mortgage payment, real estate taxes, BMW and Hummer financing? 150 grand wages to me was like a million. I could only dream of that. I'm doing ok because I planned for it my whole life. JJK
  25. Boomac: I have been a Republican all my life. Eisenhower was my favorite. He once said in a speech that the one thing that he was worried about was the power of the Industrial/Manufacturing Complex---world wide. I voted for Nixon, Reagan, Big Bush, and Little Bushy the first time. I'm a firm believer in mathematics, and the numbers say the middle class is being eliminated. JJK
