  1. Okay, I think you should run, drive or fly as fast as you can to where ever these Klipschorns are, AND BUY THEM! I just bought mine sight unseen and they're in great condition and sound even better. Most people seem to look after them pretty well. If you have concerns about corners, I think you can resolve them. I've got one corner that's technically not ideal, but it seems to have made no difference whatsoever to the sound. There's lots of good advice in this forum about getting the best out of Khorn's corner problems or not. So don't worry, just buy them.
  2. My Klipschorns......hang on that sounds good so I'll say it again....My Klipschorns are 25 years old and I don't think they're run in properly yet! (Yeah, give me a break. I just got them so let me gloat)

I mean posting a picture straight on your post without having to attach a file so people have to download? I tried this morning for my system and I couldn't do it?
  4. Yes, I agree, horns and tubes are made for each other. But that doesn't mean to say you can't run horns and solid state together which I'm doing at the moment - my tube Jolida is getting fixed. A friend told me the difference between tube and solid state was something like with a tube the music signal is being processed in a vacumn. The solid state processes the signal through solid matter. He asked what method of signal processing will sound better? Yeah, I worked out what he was getting at so that's why I went tube.
  5. I guess the results would be very room dependant. If you closed the backs of the Khorn, wouldn't it then sound more like a larger version of the La Scala? One of my corners isn't completely sealed yet, there's a glass window intruding slightly in the corner. But I'll fix that with a piece of 3/4 inch board I have already cut to size.
  6. Welcome. What a beautiful amp! You've obviously done a lot of work.. When you've finished let me know and I'll send you my shipping details. Edwin.
  7. Okay here's a rear shot. I think thats enough photo's for now. I am still saving to buy a brand new pair of 2004/5 Klipschorns. My current Klipschorns will remain my home theatre and primary music speakers for the moment. When I buy the new pair I will install them into another room I'm renovating. This room will be set up as my primary music room with with high end amp and source (to be selected) as funds become available. Regards. Edwin.

Where did you get the movie posters in that size? Very cool!! ---------------- I purchased them from the local video hire store - they sell theam for a couple of bucks after the movies have ceased being new release.
  9. Here's a closeup of the right channel front. You can see the superb condition of the speaker. I'm trying to send a high res shot of the rear - it's not working so I'll go downstairs and take a low res shot.
  10. Here's a photo of my Toshba player, Project Turntable. The Jolida tube amp is missing in action at the moment due to humm problems - it's getting fixed. The temporary replacement is a kit 10 watt per channel kit amp I built a couple of years age. I upgraded the kit with 1% resistors and better quaility capacitors for better sound. This amp usually fulfills the role of rear amplifier for my Hafler based surround sound system when I feel the urge. Still stacks of power with the Klipschorns.
  11. This is a photo of the left channel Klipschorn in place.
  12. My Klipschorns arrived yesterday by truck from Sydney. I was surprised to see they were oiled walnut veneer, not oak. Walnut was my preferred option anyway. The speakers were manufactured in 1980. They have been rewired with high grade cable sometime during the last couple of years. The veneer is perfect. Grills are natural cane in colour. Lets hope this gets through, been trying all morning. The first picture is the music room with Khorns in place. As soon as they arrived I did the usual thing, clean, oil and inspect. Everything was where it should be. The gasket was perfect so? ..straight into the corners. I've heard others having room tuning problems. I didn't. I immediately entered into audio bliss. The soundstage was to die for - it was like the room became part of the speakers - sensational! The tone! Wow! It's an old fashioned term but these Klipschorn are truly full range speakers. The scary thing is this design is 50 plus years old. My Khorn's are 25 years old. During my many months of speaker auditioning for a high end design, NOTHING, came close to these. I am not talking about these itty bitty hi-fi terms that this speaker does this better, or that speaker does that better - that's all irrelevant. The Klipschorns play music better than ANY speaker that I could every reasonably hope to afford. A funny story but my brother came to visit to see what the fuss was about. He has a Klipsch reference surround setup. I was playing Frank Sinatra's 'Where are You?' album. He said yeah, they sound nice but they're not my sort of speaker sound. He said he liked more rock orientated speakers. SILLY MAN! What's a Klipschorn owner to do with a comment like that? Well I pulled a Prince CD out. Put 'Cream' on. Turned the volume up. I think he p**d his pants. He asked to go to the bathroom. He returned a little while later looking suitably chastened! I watched some DVD's last night. I felt like I was sitting in a high class movie theatre. And that was in 2 channel!

For fun I tried to get a reading from my spl meter from a couple of feet away, it hardly registered.

My friends are buying Harley's --and they sound horrible. ---------------- Perhaps the reason your friends Harley's sound horrible is because they haven't been sealed properly into the corner.
  15. The only way my wife and I can drink any kind of alcohol undisturbed by the kids, is in coffee mugs. Otherwise they all want a taste! Anyway the weather in Goulburn (elevation about 2000 feet)is cold, so I think we will drink hot chocolate heavily laced with Kahlua.
  16. Let us know how you get on with the new receiver. I agree that DTS sounds better than DD on many discs. I notice this particularly on the Roy Orbison DVD "Black and White Night" - although could be in part due to the fact that the recording technicians spent more time on the DTS soundtrack.
  17. I have a confession to make.... As soon as my purchase order was confirmed I updated my profile. Do I feel bad? NO WAY!!! Edwin.

I can recommend the Music Hall MMF-5. I just purchased one not to long ago after owning a Linn Axis, and some other's and Its a really good sounding TT. It's definatly woth a look. Thanks again. ---------------- Hi Charlieboy. You've got a nice system. Congratulations on your Cornwalls. The Linn Axis I've heard is a nice turntable. I guess you'd be able to find one on ebay. Also I wonder if NAD still make turntables? Also speaking of Goldring (as in your cartridge - very nice!) I just read that Goldring have released a budget turntable/cartridge package. Worth checking out...
  19. Thanks . I'm getting excited. Full pics and details coming soon to a town near you!
  20. I can only recommend what I currently own That is a Project 1.2. It's a 2 speed turntable and plays 45's and LP's, but not 78's. The speed change is a bit fiddly requiring you to move the rubber belt by hand before playing 45 singles. I don't play 45's anyway so it doesn't matter to me. The turntable came already setup with an Ortofon OM5 pickup cartridge. It sounds pretty good and friends have walked into my music room commenting on the good sounding CD. They have been astounded that I was in fact playing an old fashioned record! When I upgrade I will probably go for a Rega P3. You'll have lots of fun with a record player. I get a real kick out of going to markets and second hand dealers looking through old records. Every now and again you'll come across a classic album.
  21. Reference my post in General Questions re Black Klipschorns. I was offered a pair of black Khorns and a pair of black belles. While I was in a quandry over this, (I don't like black veneer) I was told both sets of speakers had been sold. Now the good news. My hi-fi retailer friend has located a MINT CONDITION PAIR OF KLIPSCHORNS FINISHED IN MEDIUM OAK. I had to move very quickly and I have purchased them sight unseen. If I waited to see them, by the time I travelled to Sydney 200kms away, they would have gone. They are being delivered by truck on Friday.
  22. Guess what. I was too slow. Both the black belle and khorn have been sold..... BUT... My hi-fi contact has just located a pair of oak Klipschorns which I'm told are in perfect condition. I have purchased them sight unseen. See new post Oak Klipschorns.
