  1. My brother (another Klipsch nut) has a Sony 200 cd player model CX260, with optical out. He said it can play DTS discs. It's about 3 years old. Very reliable if a bit slow changing discs. The only trouble he had with it was when he moved house he didn't take the discs out and the player jammed. He simply took the cover off, removed the malfunctioning disc and it's running fine again.
  2. Okay, lets get down to the nitty gritty. I have been planning to buy new Khorns in a oiled walnut - these will be my penultimate speakers. I will keep them forever. Now a friend in the hi-fi business has just thrown a spanner in the works. He has just traded 1 pair of boxed Khorns and 1 pair of boxed Belles from a customer. He has offered them to me. BUT!!!! - they are BLACK. Shock, horror.... I haven't seen them yet, but I'm told they are only a few years old and in immaculate condition. I don't like black veneer, and it doesn't fit into the decor. Khorn's are BIG. Yeah I know black is beautiful, but they WILL dominate my room. My friend said I can have both Khorn's and Belles if I want. But........ Could I refinish them?????? HELP!

  4. I'm not that technical but I just finished setting up a friends Onkyo/Klipsch Reference/M&K sub/Toshibe DVD player system and using a spl meter adjusted all speaker outputs to the 75db reference level. We then played Master and Commander and a number of other dvd's using both dts and dolby digital. Absolutely no hiss using either format. Perhaps the more technically minded in this forum can offer more insight. Edwin.
  5. Yes I noticed that. I was setting up a friends home theatre system comprising of Onkyo receiver, m&k thx 150 sub and Reference series speakers in a medium sized room, well furnished. I utilised my new spl meter and at dolby reference 75 db using pink noise - it was loud!
  6. I don't think a move to KLF 30's is a good idea. I'm trying to move out of the KLF series to heritage because of the slight harshness you complain about. It must be the amp interacting with the Cornwalls.
  7. I agree. It's good to have the juice in reserve. If you haven't got it you can't use it...good advice.
  8. Sounds like you have a good setup in mind. Does your receiver have pre-outs for the main channel? If not you could look around for a receiver with those options and then you could look around for a tube power amp and for serious 2 channel listening, switch out the surrounds and centre, and just use your receiver as a pre. There's nothing wrong with that. I think Yamaha in the past has had some criticism in the past because their stated power figures haven't actually measured up to the actual figures all channels driven. But with Klipsch speakers it doesn't matter. Anyway current Yamaha gear has had rave reviews so buy it if you like it. I would keep your 2 channel and home theatre setup as one and spend the money where it counts. Not many of us can afford seperate 2 channel and home theatre setups.
  9. Yeah but what a way to go.......
  10. Maybe move it up near the 2 channel area. Anyone compared DVD-A discs with SACD discs yet? I've just received an Eric Bibb disc on SACD that is brilliant - called 'Good Stuff'; nice acoustic folk/blues. Another good one....sorry about this...is Celine Dion's 'A New Day Has Come' also on SACD. Both are multi channel/2 channel. I've got a couple of DVD-A's - the best is BB King's 'Riding With the King'. As yet I haven't made up my mind about the 2 different formats. They both sound good but not enough material is out yet. It's funny but after listening to there high resolution formats, I can still put an LP on my turntable and not think I am missing anything music wise!
  11. Same here. I just bought the Radio Shack spl meter. I was really surprised that 90db in my very large room was loud! I am trying to imagine what the Klipschorns will sound like at 120db!
  12. There's an argument that one full range driver is inherently more coherent than other multi driver designs. A properly designed two way system can offer much of the coherency of a single driver system and some forum members seem to think they are superior to three way designs. From what I have heard, less expensive (read more poorly designed?) three ways tend to sound messy, lacking clarity over similarly priced two ways. On the other hand I have heard the Legend KLF 10's (2 way)and the KLF 20's (3 way) side by side. In my opinion the KLF 20's were superior in the midrange featuring smoother sound, clearer voice reproduction and greater projection. I am soon to audition the Klipschorn 3 way horn speakers I will probably buy (within the next couple of days) and I am hopeful this three way system will fulfill my expectations that a properly designed three way will blow away my current Klipsch two ways.
  13. Shanling have some good reviews on their tube cd player - don't know anything about their integrated. I personally prefer to stay with more modern new/near new tube gear. In relation to buying 'veteran' tube amplifiers I'd be cautious. I just don't want anyone elses problems unless I personally knew the seller and can confirm any modifications or updates have been done properly.
  14. Thanks for your interesting dissertation Neo. Certainly SET is a very attractive option and I have been surprised during recent listening experiences what 3 to 5 well designed watts will do with sensitive loudspeakers. I won't say I'm a convert yet, but I have a more open mind. I don't know whether you are familiar with Loth-X. This company is based in Singapore and promotes a design philosophy featuring a single paper coned 'Stamm' driver in a folded horn enclosure. The company believes that using a single crossoverless driver promotes a coherency not apparent in other more complicated or multi driver designs. Like any speaker system designs, there are compromises. Most Loth-X enclosures make the Klipschorn look like a book shelf model. I also think power handling, absolute loudness, and a wide frequency response are all issues in many Loth-X designs - there's only so much you can do with a single driver.
  15. Certainly lower labor costs are driving many traditional hi-fi manufacturers to move production to China. In that equation you can include such traditional manufacturers as Quad, and in Australia, even Whatmough has moved some production off shore. I guess as hi-fi consumers we benefit in the short term from low cost product on the retailers shelves, but at what damage to traditional U.S., Australian and U.K. based manufacturers? After all most of the innovation and advances in hi-fi have been sourced from home. The Chinese based manufacturers are very good at making and selling low cost products based on Western research and developments. If our local manufacturers go to the wall; less money for R&D; we lose out.

  17. I think Golden Tube Audio went out of business? Their gear has had some good reviews. Especially the SE40.

  20. You've done very well. They have obviously been well looked after.
  21. If you like a bit of funkie jazz try Spyro Gyra, "In Modern Times", Heads Up Surround SACD no. HUSA-9061. A really good multi channel demo disc.
