  1. I picked up a beat up pair of KG 4.5s a while back. One tweeter vc was fried, so I replaced both with new replacement diaphragms from BEC. The feet were missing from both speakers. So, the question is: is there anything special about the feet, or should I just pick some HD type rubber thingys and screw 'em on? James

  3. Anyone need any toothpaste, pet food, toy trains, tires or seafood? I can get you a great deal (assuming you don't mind antifreeze in your toothpaste, melamine in your pet food, lead paint on your children's toys, tires missing bonding strips between layers, or good ole filth in your seafood). Corporate China is organized crime. Don't buy their crap. James
  4. What Duke said, mostly low end crapola. Perfect for a garage system - if that's what your aiming for - but a grand? James
  5. Several years ago I was visiting my parents in rural SE Pennsylvania. They had combination bathroom/laundryroom in their basement. One day while I was using the "facilities," I happened to glance over to the left & saw about two feet of blacksnake dangling from the hole where the water pipes went up through the ceiling. The snake pulled itself back up into the ceiling as soon as it saw me. When I told my Father that they had a blacksnake cruising around inside their walls, his only comment was "don't tell your Mother." James
  6. I believe it was Mark Twain who described golf as "a good walk spoiled." James
  7. Can't go wrong with B&K. Sounds great with Klipsch. You will be stunned at the difference in sound quality over your receiver. James
  8. Careful with the in-ear phones guys. They are an excellent way to permanently damage your hearing. With the popularity of iPods & mp3 players, I think we are going to be seeing a lot of people needing hearing aids before they're 40. James
  9. Bill: I could be wrong on this, but I think in '68 they would probably be Fir rather than Birch plywood. James
  10. Phill: Yep, you've got a pair of "Decorators." The -15 was used for awhile (I have no idea how long, but at least as late as 1973). It indicates a 15" woofer. The G in your serial number dates them to 1968. Pretty amazing how good a pair of 40 year old speakers can sound, isn't it! People are probably going to jump in here and tell you that you need to upgrade & replace all the capacitors in your cross-overs right away, but I'd recommend that you listen to them as they are for awhile & only jump into the upgrades after you've established a baseline for how they sound "as is." Oh, by the way, welcome to the forum. There is a wealth of information here from some very knowledgeable, generous folks. James
  11. Phill: It would help if you gave us the three letter "TYPE" code off the tag on the back of the speakers. On yours, its probably something like CDR (Cornwall, Decorator, Raw) meaning that they were "raw" Birch (or possibly Fir) plywood (sanded, but unfinished). The idea was that the owner could stain & finish them to match the decor or other furniture in their home. Some Decorator models were furnished without grill cloths. COL translates to Cornwall, Oak, Lacquer. CWO means Cornwall, Walnut, Oil finish and so on. Oh yeah, if you give us the serial number we can date the speakers for you. James
  12. Nope. Looks like a prior owner did a DIY project. The grills should be a simple flat piece of 1/8" thick masonite (?) with cut-outs for the horn mouths & woofer covered in a woven fabric. The whole thing is attached with lots of little velcro dots. Unless they were "Decorators." In that case, I believe they came without grills. James
  13. I believe that the B&K PT-5 has XLR outs. I have a pair of the PT-3 S-IIs & I really like B&K's preamps (and amps). No phono section, but it has a great tuner built in. James
  14. If Henry Kissenger can find a woman, anyone can. James
  15. dtel: I was raised on a farm & have no problem with raising an animal for slaughter. After all, that's where all our meat comes from. The problem I have with this whole sick scenario is that this pet hog (which was "feral" for a total of four days) was sold as a "hunt." I don't know what was paid for the "privilege" of killing this pet pig, but I think the whole thing is sick. And contrary to what IB Slammin says, I think that once the kid understands what he did, he will be ashamed for the rest of his life. James
  16. Sounds like Dick Cheney's kind of "hunting," surprised he didn't have dibs on this one. http://kdka.com/local/local_story_344154903.html Hand raised pet pig "hunted" down and killed in an enclosed area. Ace marksman 11 year old fired 16 shots at "Fred" who was about the size of a Volkswagen and hit him "less than half a dozen times" over a three hour "hunt." Fred probably thought the kid was going to feed him some canned yams. The whole thing is pretty disgusting. James
  17. The only stupid question is the one you don't ask. James
  18. Been wearing glasses since HS. I'm over 50 and slightly nearsighted, so I have the opposite problem from those needing reading glasses. I take my glasses off to read. Actually, since I've been working out of a home office for about the last 10 years or so, the only time that I put on my glasses is when I'm about to walk out the front door. I really only need them for distance vision, like for driving or watching TV. James
  19. I'll add my Dire TV horror story. This goes back about four or five years to when they were adding local channel service. I was trying to watch the Olympics and was getting, something like 15 screen freezes per half hour along with lots of digital artifacts and a generally unwatchable signal - not good when you're trying to watch a sporting event. I complained repeatedly & the service department denied any problem on their end, blaming everything on my equipment and making me jump through all the hoops (unplug everything, reboot, etc). After a number of rounds of this over several days, they finally admitted that they were having problems with the transmissions from the local network affiliates to Dire TV. When I said "I'm not going to pay for this level of lousy service," their response was that they would be happy to have me disconnected if I was dissatisfied with their service. So, I pulled the plug on Dire TV. They then had the gall to continue billing me for another two months and continued to harass me for about another 6 months over the "unpaid balance" - which I refused to pay. I'm still pissed. They lost me as a customer forever. James
  20. My personal paraphrase of the RV industry advertising slogan: "Recreational Vehicles -- No matter where you go, you're always in the way." James
  21. Congratulations gaspr. Quitting while there is another smoker is the house has to be the hardest thing anyone can do. It takes tremendous will power. As I've said before, you have to DECIDE you're just not going to smoke any more. Sounds like you've made the decision. James
  22. I hunted rabbits and pheasants with a shotgun when I was a teenager growing up in rural PA, but left home before I got into deer hunting. My younger brother, however, bought himself a 30.06 rifle and thought he wanted to go deer hunting. First day of deer season a buck came wandering past him with it's lower jaw shot off. He killed it rather than let it starve to death -- and never went hunting again. James
  23. The Denon receiver and the Carver separates were connected to the same pair of Cornwalls. As I recall, the Denon AVR 1804 was rated at something like 90 watts per channel (and I was only using two channels). I set the spl levels the same so I wasn't just hearing differences in volume. At the levels I was listening to, I probably wasn't using more than 2 watts from either the Denon receiver, or the Carver amp. It was the difference in the quality of the sound that struck me. As I said, it may not have been a fair comparison, after all, the Carver stuff was nearly 15 years old and the Denon was brand new. But there really was no comparison, the sound quality of the Denon was so lousy I couldn't stand having it in my house. By the way, just as the Denon receiver didn't fair very well against the Carver separates, the Carver separates didn't fair very well in comparison to the new B&K stuff. The Carver TFM-45 amp has since been sold and the CT-17 pre-amp has been relegated to my garage system. I know lots of folks are very happy with the higher end (38xx) Denon models and these models have a very good reputation. My recommendation, however, is to avoid the lower end (made in China) Denon receivers if you can afford it -- and, separates do make a BIG difference. As always, YMMV. James
  24. An 11 year old hunting with a 50 caliber revolver, now that is something truly frightening. Since when did anyone hunt anything - let alone with a 1,000 # hog with a revolver? This story has bullshit (or, at least, stupidity) written all over it. James
