  1. I bought an RS analog SPL just last week - $39.95. Checked the RS web site 1st and it told me which of the 10 or so local RS stores had it in stock - about half of them had it. Didn't see any indication that it had been discontinued. James
  2. I don't have any experience with the Denon 3802, but I recently bought a Denon 1804 and was VERY unhappy with the sound quality. I took it back and traded it in on a B&K Reference 50. The difference was night and day. A side benefit is that the B&K will give you 7 channel stereo from a 2 channel source. (OK, the center channel is still mono, but with 2 Cornwalls in front and Heresys for surround and rear, most people are blown away just listening to the radio.) James
  3. Please correct me if I'm wrong (and I'm sure someone will ), but as I understand it, in HT only the front 2 channels are stereo while center, sub, surround and rear channels are all getting a mono signal. Seems a waste to use Khorns for rear channel "fill." James
  4. I'm not familiar with the particular Denon amp you have, but I recently bought a Denon AVR 1804 (6 channel 90wpc I believe) and was not very happy with the sound quality. I picked up a Niles DPS-1 so that I could a/b the Denon against my old B&K ST140 (105 wpc) driving my Cornwalls. Compared to the B&K, the Denon REALY sounded like CRAP regardless of the source. To me the sound quality of the Denon was simply unacceptable, so I took it back, bit the bullet and bought a B&K Ref 50 Pre/Pro and a couple more 2 channel amps. The difference is dramatic. James
  5. Hey fini: Whereabouts in Sonoma County? I'm in Santa Rosa (ex SF). James
  6. I've got a digital multimeter that I backed my 1933 Franklin over (don't ask) destroying the digital readout screen, so I bought a closeout Bel Merit (made in Korea I believe). But I still have the old one out in the garage because even though you can't see the readout, the continuity tester still beeps - which is often all you really need when working on your hobby car! James
  7. My vote is for the 3 B&K separates -it never hurts to have an additonal two channel amp at your disposal & B&K amps are sweet with Klipsch. I don't have any experience with the 3802, but was very disappointed with the sound quality of a Denon AVR-1804. Since it sounds like you're prepared to spend some coin, you might consider a better pre/processer. It made a HUGE difference in my system. James
  8. I recently bought a pair of oak lacquered Heresys and one of them had about a half inch long cigarette burn on the top. A few minutes of rubbing with your basic #2 pencil eraser and it is virtually unnoticable. Pencil erasers are also good for cleaning or burnishing electrical contacts, especially the european style fuse holders. Worth a try anyway. James
  9. If you've got a broadband connection, go to KCSM.org and you can get an astonishing 24/7 of commercial free Jazz (and blues). We're really lucky here in the San Francisco Bay Area - We get this over the air for free (of course, don't forget to pledge when they ask for it - or it may go away). James
  10. Ken: While I'm sure Primare makes great stuff, for that kind of bucks you can put together a killer system of perfectly wonderful stuff that's a couple of years past its "sell by" date. Super amps like the B&K ST140 can be had for less than $200 bucks, annual update challenged pre-amps can often be had for less. Since you seem to be budget minded, I'd recommend exploring the used market. I've rarely had a component fail and I'll match my system against anything I've heard. James
  11. Ken: Welcome to the world of music! James
  12. Okay, here're my 5 bits: 1) Verse - Patricia Barber 2) Ever Since The World Ended - Mose Allison 3) Good Morning Heartache - Johnny Adams 4) In Blue - Karrin Allyson 5) Blue Light Till Dawn - Cassandra Wilson Guess I must like bluesy vocalists. James
  13. Just picked up a Hafler DH200 (100 wpc) that will be used with my Carver CT17 pre-amp driving a pair of KG2's in my home office system. Which will free up my old Optonica(NOT Optimus)amp and tuner and allow me to designate them as the "garage system" fulfilling my dream to have decent sound where I live. Does anyone have experience with this amp? I know it was fairly highly rated in its day. For $113.50 I figure I can't go too far wrong. James
  14. If you work at Magnolia forget the Japanese stuff (a lot of Denon is actually made in China)- use your employee discount and move up to B&K - you won't regret it. James
  15. This speaker was used for about two weeks before I got the bug and upgraded my whole system (new B&K Ref 50, 2 x B&K ST125.2, 2 pair of Heresys, & RC7). It is as new and comes with original box, packaging and manual. MSRP was $279, BB sold them for $219. $140/obo plus shipping. I'm in Santa Rosa - San Francisco north bay area - for local pick-up or possible delivery. James
  16. I'm not familiar with the B&K PT5, but I have two ST 125.2's and a B&K ST 140 driving a pair of Cornwalls and two pair of Heresys. In my opinion, B&K amps sound great with Klipsch Heritage and should do equally well with your RF-35's. At the price - you can't go wrong. James
  17. Good Score! You must have jumped while I was busy checking the guy's feedback - when I went to buy them they were gone:( James
  18. After an "intervention" a friend of mine with a serious drinking problem was admitted to a rehab facility and ended up being assigned the room where Garcia died. Not exactly a roll model...

  20. Any good ski shop will have "demo's" (not just the regular rental stuff) of most models that you can rent for the day. Ask for advice and demo as many different skis as you can during the season. Then, when you find something you like, buy a pair at the end of the season when they are steeply discounted and you'll be all set for next year. DO NOT just go out and buy a pair of skis without having skied them - or you WILL be disappointed and having a yard sale. James
  21. Just got a demo from "Good Guys" for $499. The sales guy offered it to me for $599 and I said I'd go $500. So, its not like the old days when the sales people really could cut a deal, but it never hurts to try. James
  22. I'd say Rivas Audio saw this guy comming and cashed in for all they could get. Looks like the epitome of solid smoke cables taken to the nth degree. I particlarly like the tasteful design of the "Wurlitzer" speakers. If you can afford to do something like this, why are there cables running all over the floors? Classic example of more money than sense. Also - there is only one chair in the room - but the guy's been married for 30 years - must be a great relationship. Of course I'm jealous, I'd just do everything differently. James
  23. I'd second Max's recomendation of the Heresys. I've had my Cornwalls for almost 25 years and they would be my first choice, but they're the size of small refrigerators. Heresys are an excellent choice for limited space and when you finish school and upgrade your room, you can always use them as surround or rear channel speakers to add fill to your new Khorns. James
  24. Seti: Don't know which Carver Erik was talking about, but I have a TFM-45 which (bridged to mono - as you would for a sub)is rated at 1,000 watts - should be more than enough juice! James
  25. Is there any downside to "fool's bi-amping?" If you have an extra amp channel why not use it? James
