  1. Well Dr. Bill, I cannot assist in any way other than to share my tube failure tales. I don't build or bench test squat and necessarily rely upon my suppliers integrity. In 6 mos I've had a KT-88, KT-90 and a rectifier tube fail, most upon initial outings. I wondered whether it might not be part-in-parcel with vintage product. Got everything running and alls well...for now.
  2. Hey now Maron...not all of us are swinish barbarians . I got 1st dibs on any throw-away units!!!!
  3. I'm with neo-33!!! I love the "Thin Man" movies and all that art deco stuff. Takes away the boxiness and delivers some real panache. Did they come in any other finishes???
  4. Plz don't take this personally,.....but.....sounds like the salesman met your expectations and your Dad didn't. My mom did the same with me. After umpteen years of college and an accomplished career she still believed that I was wrong about her smoking. She doesn't believe that any longer as most everything I warned her about came to pass. Seems as though parents can't get their offspring out of the little kid mode, sometimes. I seriously hate pushy salespeople. Had I been in your position I'd have told him/her to shove the deal and left dragging Daddy with me. There's plenty of places to do business with. Mebbe you can still unravel the deal?!?
  5. Once I replaced a pair of khorns with a complete Klipsch Reference surround system (RF-7's, RC-7, RS-7's and RSW-15). I missed the horns from the "get go". So I got new Khorns> Save yourself the misery. Work with those from this forum and keep the Khorns.
  6. Trey Cannon. Thanks for all you did this past year. Merry Christmas and happy new year 2 all.
  7. CHAMPAGNE TASTE, BEER BUDGET.......Excellent, dead on and eloquently emphatic!!
  8. Had a rescued German Shepard who made short order of all the weather stripping in the car. Problem, of course, was that it was a company vehicle. Blamed it on vandals, probably on LSD given the well evident teeth tracks. No Disc: Maybe if Bear had a nice rug to sooth over that concrete basement slab he might be less inclined to renovate your wiring??
  9. True, true true....most newer televisions provide inputs for multiple channels and signal source types. Monitors are typically set-up to receive multiple source signals for each individual channel...so you have the pleasure of redundancy also.
  10. I suspect that many of you patronize your symphonies. Last night we attended the Spokane Symphony Christmas concert. It was extremely well done with the one highlight being a live performance of The Grinch song. A solo bass singer and a full-on orchestra.....absolutley marvelous. Any similar experiences??
  11. In a traditional sense Heritage product isn't promoted. It's advertised on e-bay. The Khorn's the only speaker to routinely acheive significant bidder interest. Research other high-end manufacturers sites and examine their product development saga. In many instances you'll find that they cite the Klipschorn as their benchmark in trying to top the best. It's bantered on Audigon and many audiophile sites. People seem to love it or not, but they always seem to know that it's a "player" product worthy of critical review. Every now and then somebody gets it correct the 1st time. 50 some years later the Khorn is arguably such a product. It's known among the people who need to know. People rarely advertise the bible just their versions of it. As mentioned in an earlier post Klipsch is worthy of documentary status in lieu of Madison Ave.
  12. I had a new Jolida 502(?)integrated tube w/mods from Underwood that was noisy (lo freq hum)on RF-7s. T'would have been obnoxious on Khorns. Manu found nothing amiss. Ended up replacing it with a Cary SLI-80 integrated that was quiet on the 7's and on Khorns. Just my experience but I would encourage a solid trial prior to commitment.
  13. The "flava" ligaments are those which run from the ventral (front) portion of adjaecent vertebral bodies. So, as you look at the spinal column these would be the ligaments which connect the front section of each vertebra to the one above and below. They run from the 3rd cervical (neck) vertebra down to the sacrum (tailbone). Hypertrophy simply means enlarged. Were they all hypertophied or were they more clearly defined (lumbar, thoracic, L1 to L2??). Frankly sounds a whole lot better than herniated discs and so forth. Should be treatable with anti-inflammatories, I would think.
  14. Fisher 500 integrated tube JBL D-130's (1962) in custom made cabinets (no tweeters) Some off brand TT I cannot now recall. Still have it all...in storage: speakers are dismantled due to H2O damage. I can hear Floyd Cramer as I write!!!
  15. Sorry, I forgot to mention in my earlier offering that a truly "blind" study also means that the administrators of the study are also blind to the variables as they change. Again in this work they're not and they council those whom supposedly are blind to the cord switches. They might just as well held up a sign saying, "Now here's the high ned product we want you to prefer".
  16. Real human subject research defined here as "AB/X" is where each individual is used as their own variable AND control. As such the research design must eliminate and or analyze (not introduce) any bias present in the population studied. In this (ha ha) study not only were the subjects coached the assessment of results was based upon a questionaire tool whose content was left entirely out of the publication. Even if all else was worthy of merit the sample population shown is all male and the sample size is way too small for any valid statistical analysis. There are ways to objectively study human subjective evaluation of audio systems. This is simply a marketing tool and any manufacturer associated with such work should be patently ashamed...or patently suspect. Not funny, not good when people bastardize scientific procedure.
  17. Recently there was a very lengthy posting about using a single heritage speaker as a center channel in "mono" mode to achieve a distinctive soundstage between Khorns. I inquired as to using an RC-7 bi-amped as a center channel and was essentially ignored (got no response from any participants). Apparently it was better to refine the signal into the mono format (requiring some home built electronics) to drive the center channel with. Like yourself I wondered about bringing the soundstage more central through a bi-amped RC-7 using the same signal source. Clearly one problem would be attenuation as the Khorns are so efficient. Some kind of volume differentiation would be necessary to tune the system. My Khorns are only about 12 feet apart and the soundatge is nicely detailed. While I own the equipment(s) to do what your describing I have not felt the need. Will be interested to hear about your endeavor. Happy holidays and good tinkering to you sir!!
  18. 1st of all I think Klipsch does not do the general public any good by not giving them more exposure to a quality and affordable speaker product line. Like it or not mass media marketing works and way too many innocent ears become subject to the Bose factor for the lack of knowing any different. That said Klipsch may become less affordable for all in underwriting such an endeavor. Sadly my personal experience with Klipsch retailing is that it's quite understated. Others on this forum complain that they're unable to audience Klipsch product without extensive effort. I live in Idaho and the single Klipsch dealer in my area only does "in-wall" set-ups and the "K's" as he calls them are just one of many speakers he sells. He does not market Klipsch. He offers them as a choice. Literally, I think he was mad having to sell me Klipschorns. There is no other dealer within 200 miles from my home. So, it seems that Klipsch relies heavily on customer base support and word-of-mouth advertising....and, Klipsch appears comfortable with their market share!?! Mass media marketing certainly can be tacky. What would be much more refined and genuinely warranted would be a Klipsch documentary. Not many companies survive in a single product niche for so long and no product has enjoyed the lengthy acclaims of the venerable corner horn. There should be plenty of production channels hungry for credible topics and this company is ripe for such pickings. PWK and his speakers are the seminal basis for this industry and still are commonly referenced by high-end speaker manufacturers. Get Klispch on Discovery or TLC and then get ready for serious product delivery backlogs.
  19. My dachshunds (LuLu and Precious) love classical (stretch back and sleep) and hate zydeco (bark and generally go bananas). Maybe it's the whistling often found in the zydeco tracts?? Who knows for sure??
  20. Sorry, had to decorate the tree thingy. Jeez, what a project. Turned out nice. Appreciate everyones input and will apply many of your suggestions.
  21. Sorry, had to go and buy the Christmas tree. O.K. civil engineering but worked in biomedical: strange combination but true. Granted...tis the burden of the un-intiated to make up ground. That's the drift of the inquiry. I'm suggesting that it would be much simpler/quicker if those "in the know" would be so kind as to offer a more explanation along with their topics. Maybe I'm asking too much but it don't hurt to ask now do it. One of my mentors who taught me technical writing and publication said that "any illustration or table needs to stand alone". He meant that the nature/structure of the table/graph, etc... plus the nominal description allowed needed to provide a good enough explanation so that the reader did not need to refer back to the text to interpret the information. It worked wonderfully, especially when used for presentations later. Tech topics presented here would be much more comprehensible if they added a short description or, if you will, an abstract about the project. Done once it could patch into any subsequent follow-ups and so on... If the goal is to share and communicate then those of us thirsting to learn would be better served by not having to dig for the information.
  22. Clearly their are a number of forum members who are accomplished techies...and many more, such as myself, who are not so capable. There's a tendency to assume that everyone can grasp the range of levels of tweeking being advanced in these posts. Also, there are a number of on-going tweeks and other projects that get updated but not summarily reviewed rendering those out of the loop as un-informed bystanders. I have a great interest in many of these subjects but find myself unable to comprehend the vernacular...and guys I'm an engineer (albeit an old one). Is it just a learning curve? Could someone recommend a "techy" primer? It would be very helpful if y'all could just take the time to provide a less technical summary of what your doing, why your doing it and what you aim to accomplish. A little bit of a project road map for us neophyte, audio dummies. Oh, those on-going projects need an overview or they might just as well be communicated exclusively between the individuals involved. Thanks
  23. Some-how, some-way Wal-mart got fresh artichokes in December!! They weren't rubbery and they were huge having stems well over an inch in diameter. .....and they were relatively inexpensive!!! In the midst of a light snowfall we grilled steaks over mesquite coals while the "beasts" steamed to perfection. Charlotte Church warbled her finest as we ate a midsummers night meal in early December. Life be spectacular at my house.
  24. Not stopping smoking as a matter of national public health policy. It's my pet peeve because I've just seen way too many really wonderful people die very ugly deaths from tobacco.
